EA skiing game

Controls are the least important thing right now, especially if no game is even in devolpment yet. the main idea needs to be thought up along with the environment/theme of the game.

obviously any controls would be similar to skate (analog sticks to control everything etc.) because thats been the case for every game recently.

the game would HAVE TO have snowboarding in it to be successful. NSers is a very small part of the market, thinking EA would make a game that appeals to such a small group of people is ignorant.

the game needs one or 2 fully playable mountains. as in, no out of bounds at all. it doesnt need to be a real mountain... just have a huge mountain, obviously with a bigger park than most mountains and more crazy backcountry, but the whole thing needs to be accessible. just like the city in skate, except on a hill basically... the ability to hike would be cool also.

trick wise, i think you should be able to pull everything to start. maybe you could meet pros or do challenges where you get taught how to pull new tricks... but no stupid shit like getting points to make you better or anything.

grabs could still just be the shoulder buttons... left stick to move, right stick to jump (same as skate, with butters being pulling the stick back halfway...), rails you could just use the right stick to move your sticks 90 degrees to lock on, or just spin on, but no button to do grinds, as long as you kinda lock on when you hit a rail...

also, i think the one of the most important things for me is how the skiing looks and feels, especially in powder. they need to have variations in style, and make people actually ski properly on hardpack and in pow...

I don't know if it has to be skiing and snowboarding mixed. I think it would be better if they put all of their efforts into the skiing.

I mean there are a ton of just snowboarding games out there now and skiers still play. Why would it not work the other way around? If its a good game everyone will play, including people that don't snowboard or ski

I already made a cover for the game everybody!!!!

Indeed it did.
That's a hell of an 18th post my friend. You officially went from newb to contributor in my eyes right dur.

Quick little add-on:
Jibs/Rails: In addition to the Right Analog allowing you to press (by pressing forward or back assuming that your bindings are where they should be for either a nose or tailpress), Left and Right on the Right Analog stick should allow you to "crook slide" (pressure sensitive). Halfway = solid crook, whereas throwing the stick left or right quickly and completely should perform a surface swap.
Taps/bonks should be achieved simply by ollieing (whether already on the rail/jib or not) and "orienting" your skis with the right analog stick in the desired direction. For example: I'm skier sliding an up flat box left foot forward. At the kink, I ollie (quick pull back on the right analog --> quick flick forward) and spin 90 degrees left THEN I quickly push the right analog stick forward at the apex of the ollie, thus "lifting my toes" and tapping my tails on the flat section, before continuing the spin to switch out.
As I said before, X/A would be responsible for gripping rails/boxes (based on the lead foot). Maybe the rear foot further modifies the trick....one footers? Andy Parry style trickery? hmmm... Example: I'm sliding a rainbow rail right foot forward. I press and hold X (left foot) beginning at the apex of the rail and the skier lifts his left foot for a gnar gnar onefooter. OOOORRRR, I'm on a flat box right foot forward and I press X and it initiates a hippy killer or jack knife.
Something I didn't mention about grabs: As in SKATE, grabs can be modified after the fact by pressing the right analog stick in different directions. Example. I'm spinning a right rodeo 5 and I grab trailing safety by pulling the LT (left hand). While holding LT I NOW press up/forward on the right analog stick (remember ski "orientation") and my boring safety becomes the poked out high safety that Sammy Carlson does. Booyah.
Anyone, feel free to take my obnoxiously long suggestion and make edits or add your ideas by copy and pasting. Maybe an asterisk and a footnote to point out the change.
I know this likely won't yield results, but it's fun to think about. You never knooooooww.....

this has probabley been said but i think it would be so sick if you could control your skis in the air ith one of the analog sticks. this would help with bonks, and doing a shifty would be soo much funner that way.

yes make it like the skate concept that would be dope

acutallly i was thinking of it a little while ago.

but you have to have nollies and good rail shit. use the right stick to get off axis in the air

have real brand name shit like salomon, oakley, etc. and for career make it like tony hawk proving ground where you can choose who u want to be. Like have one be a gangster choice where its about haveing style and making cool edits. oh and it would be sick to edit you footage.and have henrik harlaut and steve stepp be the main mission guy. and have the other one like jon olssen or dumont all about competion, etc.

It should have the same physics as Skate 2, and not be like ssx on tour, which is too unrealistic.
It should have a different camera view in EA Ski than in skate, possibly like the overhead one in Jibbin. the Jibbin jump view is amazing.
to land on rails you should actually have to jump on to the rail, like skate. no pressing buttons and magically grinding. same with switchups, it should all be done with thumb skill.
Clothing editor should be a huge part of the game. same with other gear.
All movement i think, should be done with the sticks and reserve all availible buttons for grabs.
there should be cool features that are unique to newschool skiing, like afterbang, or butterzones, shifties, etc.
all skis should be center mounted, unlike ssx. haha
Definately make it possible to unclip and hike hills or other things. In Skate 1 you couldnt get off your board and that was really frustrating.
make ways to have your own style of skiing in the game.
maybe make a map generator where you could build your own jumps and sizes?

idk just somethings that would make this game rad as FUCK

at least make it so you can set a session point, i don't think that unclipping is that necessary

maybe like a rail creator or something like that? kind of a build a jib feature?

yes must have an overhead view like jibbin

and jump on to rail no button pressing. also have too have baggy clothes and AFTERBANG for the gangster career.

yeah i forgot session point thats really big.
and i guess unclipping wouldnt be that big of a deal because it would all be down hill. but yea definately a session point

Be sure to tell your dad that it will be a huge let down if this game never comes through, cuz i can already see all the stoke about this throughout NS

-online playing, stats

-online comps, with normal users being able to judge

-have whole villages like others said, where you can hit urbans

-have acutal resorts, or make your own

-gear editor(make it extensive as fuck, with all sorts of outerwear and skis and junk)

-include all big comps

-make it a progressive game, so you get better the more you play

-MAKE IT FOR WII< NOT JUST PS3 AND XBOX

Ive put tons of thought into a game like this, have a skate style like every one else said but have the analog sticks for each ski. say you want to lock into a rail you couldm lean your skis 1 up and 1 down and push sidways to turn. To pop click down the analog sticks and if you wanted to nollie or ollie push forward or backword before clicking the analogs. use the trigger bottens for flips linkonloop stlye and say press both and push the analog forward or backwords for fronts or bflips.

have a customisable backyard style park with dif style rails and boxes and be able to choose the steepnes of it/bumps or ditches. you would have to incorperate urban and make levels with questions almost like the solomon road trip. toss in some mini games like pinball, gnarmellow, snowball target practice while going up the lift. you could even have secret shacks with off trails with a somthing like a joint powerup for some slowmo tricks. have a ton of options to build jibs over any and everything and actually take some big hill trail maps for the freerome, advertising for the mountains + a realistic conection with local riders.

you would have to have a total cuastomizable charictor with choices or diffrent types of skis, bindings and boots, poles or nopoles that can be bought with money found on trails like in THPS2. tall tees tight pants w/e represents you and have a compition of PIG online to show off your skills compeating against fellow online jibbers. and have a customizable music player to keep you in the zone

Just toss in as many companies, styles, comps, people, tricks and anything else you can think of into it

have pros for diffrent chalanges and unlock them for freerome and have unlockables like shane and glen for compleation of difrent difficulties.

I think that the lb/rb button would make for a better handplant option, like in skate 2. I had a bit of trouble imagining the grabs using the trigger buttons at first but then remembered how in skate/skate 2 if you tweak the position of that skater before the grab it becomes a much different grab, i think that this could be applied to to a ski grab application, for example lt+rt-double saftey, while lt+rt...^= truck driver, figuring out crossing the skis for grabs would be important too, but if this shit is serious can I make reserve my copy now? Jokes, but seriously don't tease us.

a JOSS contest where you make your own video and other people judge it. Like for example...the game finds 5 people who are trying to enter the contest. they each get a copy of all the other players videos they make in 2 days or something....then they rank em all from best to worst. would be hard to pull off but if EA did it would be the ILLEST!

Mountain Possibilities:

Squaw Valley

Breckenridge

Mammoth

Whistler

Northstar

Vail

Keystone

Toggenbaum!!!!!haha

Ares

La Clusaz

and more

omg i jizzed my pants

make ittttt finallly you are our hopppee

soooo many people will buy it will be the sickest game ever

okay, someone really should take initiative and get this done. I hope this thing works out with the dad and all... but i think we need someone to really just get the ball rolling, ns'ers and skiers in general should be enough to make break even if not make a profit and plus whoever makes the first legit ski game will be an instant legend

idk if this has been said or not but in skate u have to ollie off the rails you should be able to just slide off without jumping to do a 90 out, but if you do a 270 you should be able to spin early off the rail of have to jump besides that i hope this game gets made cause it would be sick

some of you guys are thinking way too much here... a lot of the control ideas and general game possibilities youre coming up with are too complicated and wouldnt really work/be feasible, especially considering that if a game like this was made, it would be rather low budget compared to most of the bigger more popular games... (at least to start off with)

control wise, all you really need is left analog stick to ski and right analog stick to control skis in the air/do ollies etc. i still think most likely youre gnna need a face button to make you jump, and maybe have ollies as a seperate thing for urban-style rails or other jibs.

spins/flips would be with the left analog stick, the shoulder buttons would do different grabs, and the right stick could tweak the grabs... and maybe use the face buttons to do other grab variations etc. or set an off-axis spin...

youre never going to get a whole village to walk around in and be a gangsta idiot. this isnt an RPG, the game should be about skiing. i couldnt give a shit if i have one set character and cant change any of his gear as long as the skiing part is sorted out... although obviously there would be an ability to change clothes and skis and shit, thats not really a problem or anything difficult to incorporate.

rails definately shouldnt have a lock-on button... having crazy rail tricks like hippie-killers etc. is a stretching it a bit, maybe in a 2nd game or something.. id be happy if the rails were solid and you could do all variations of spins on/off and switchups.

hand-drags etc. would probably be something to add on later, not the most important thing...

butters could be controlled with the right analog stick easily...

also, in the air, if you arent doing a grab, the right-stick could control the skis to do shiftys etc. or nose/tail taps...

there only needs to be one mountain that you can access all of... having one or 2 huge parks, a few tree runs with tree jibs and stuff, and a massive backcountry... hiking could be used, although all you really need is the session markers ala Skate.

basically, its not that complicated. you dont need to make it super-complicated like a lot of you guys are suggesting.

You're being critical of other people's ideas, yet you're offering not a single original idea here. You essentially have summarized what myself and others have already proposed. I just don't know where you're coming from.
I think most people are in favor of a relatively complex control scheme because it's ultimately more rewarding to master. The last thing I want, is a button masher. I want to feel like I'm improving.
This game is likely to never even be produced, why not think big and have fun considering the possibilities?

Why wouldn't the right analog/ollie system work for jumps? It works perfectly in SKATE, and it's much more intuitive than holding then releasing an arbitrary button. Also, it allows you to control the intensity of the pop as well as potentially to subtly alter the axis of rotation.
I agree that the GTA, open environment, explore the village idea is unnecessary and sort of takes away from what's important. Not to mention, it sounds like it would be incredibly difficult to execute. But, it would be nice to have the ability to click out of your bindings in a manner similar to Shaun White in order to hike a rail, access different locations, etc. Plus, I'd like to see some ridiculous yard sales.
The rail/jibbing system might need to be on the simple side, but I think upping the difficulty would make landing tech tricks just amazingly satisfying. I agree, that there shouldn't be a "lock on" button...grinding should be about simply taking the right angle and speed into a jib and timing the ollie. I still stand behind the idea of X/A corresponding to your feet and using your front foot to perform swaps. Obviously, if you spin on to a box and you want to then blind swap, or blind spin out, you wouldn't necessarily need to grip.
As a fun add-on, I think maybe a "Focus" mode would be cool. If executed right, it could avoid being cheesy. For example, maybe you have the ability to enter a slow-mo where you have greater control of your rail tricks after stomping a certain amount of tricks or just maintaining a really solid line. This of course would be optional, and would be best in small doses.
I can't stress how important the animations would/will be. I like the idea of choosing your "style": laid back vs. athletic/aggressive...it would really personalize the experience. Also, the game should recognize your preferences and respond to your tendencies. I haven't played Stoked, but I thought the "hucker" vs. "style" was a really great idea.

As everyone else said, think "Skate."
Its by far the best action sports game ever, and in my opinion the best game ever. If there was a skiing game like that i think I'd be glued to my tv for years

SKATE ON SNOW

sorry for caps, but yea pretty much, and lots of customization

it has to blow snowboard games outta the water

and a good mix of park, backcountry, groomers

and a few tow behinds?

all of the stuff you said sounds really goodthese are some of the little things that your missing
-it shouldn't be all pro based there should be a bunch of underground guys like the clown school/traveling circus guys-for the sponsoring there should be a certain point in the game where certain people approach you and something saying your really good and we'd like to sponsor you and then they would be on your list of people that you could choose for sponsors-as someone else said somewhere in this thread you should be able to just spin double corked 12's in you first comp even though you know the controls. Like for example you start off as a unknown am and you can spin 5's and 7's maybe do a couple of inverts and then as you do more competitions and ski some more you can slowly start spinning faster and doing larger tricks, and this should also be affected by your skis-also taken from this thread there should also be a career choice of being the guy that just goes backcountry hucking cliffs and doing competitions like cold rush-also for the sponsor's it should be most of the big name companies and then some of the smaller ones like moment and ninthward-and have a legit story line not like that gay shaun white story considering there wasn't really one except for collecting stuff which as you said is always fucking awful and no fun-and lastly have it be realistic no quad backflips or 1800

thats my two centsbut other than that everything you had sounded right on the dot what an amazing skiing game should be set up like.

there is endless ideas. show him this thread and he might take it more siriously (as in, it would really be a sick game)

all im doing is being realistic.

the reason i suggested not using the right stick for jumps would be because you would use the right stick for ollies/butters, and when you pop off a jump, its not the same as ollieing off a jump... having a button to jump wouldnt be unrealistic, it wouldnt make the game a 'button masher', it would just be logical and open up the right stick for other possibilities. as i said, you could still use the right stick to alter the axis or move your skis once you are in the air... and using a button to jump would still allow you to carve off the lip and whatever else.

im simply thinking realistically because i really want this game to be made.... i dont think its that farfetched to have a skiing/snowboarding game in the style of skate, especially consdiering how popular the last winter x-games was, and how Skate re-defined the action-sports genre.
