who can do it on a cd writer and if u get ripping software can u play it on a dvd player or just computer?

I am not sure what you are asking.

You can't burn a DVD disc in a CD burner.

You can make a DivX or XviD encoded video file from a DVD. You can burn this on a CD and it will only play on a computer

You can make a VCD from the DVD and this VCD will play in a DVD player.

A lot of the DVD players will played VCD's now, but the quality sucks and the time it takes to actually make a VCD file isn't worth it. It's so cheap to buy an actual DVD burner now, that you'd be better off doing that.

No one on their death bed has ever said 'I wish I had played it safe'

You can't burn comercial DVDs with a DVD burner unless you rip it, decode it, re-encode it and then burn it. This takes a long time for your computer to do. You can also download these re-encoded files, but the file size is about 4 Gigs.

This is because home DVD burners can't burn multi-layer DVDs. No 9 or 13 Gig DVDs.

Double Sided and Dual Layered are totally different. Having a double sided DVD is basically like having a single 4.5 DVD Gig on one side and another on the reverse side. A Dual Layered DVD doubles the capacity.
