Durability of a portable hard drive (aka mp3 player)?

I know mp3 players have been talked about countless times and i know the ins and outs of just about every player on the market but my real question is directed to skiers so thats why i am asking you guys

From your experience with an mp3 player (more interested in the hard drive versions) do they seem to last after the countless hits they take from skiing. i have read a number of reviews from people saying that their mp3 player crashed on them from working out in the gym, and i dont want mine to break because i know it will take more abuse when i am hitting jumps. Do they seem to accually last or have any of you had to replace/warrenty your player because of this.

Mainly looking at 20gb versions like the Zen Touch, iPod, Dell jukebox and Phillips player

 
i had a 10gb cheep-O a while ago and it worked great other then the battery sucked ass when it got cold and it wouldent keep a good charge at all. get a mini disc player, cant be beat

while I dont condone being a sheep, ipods are pretty rugged. sony's is better because it's lighter and has some sort of hard drive protection system, but it's also about 100 dollars more

If you buy it from a place like CompUSA or Best Buy you can get their replacement plan for it that will cover any damage that you might incur while skiing. Just take it back, say it broke and they'll hand you a new one. It's a pretty good deal for only $20 or so extra

 
I just wanna bring this thread back to life because I am looking at either the zen touch 20gb or muvo 5gb (both from creative)... I thought I would go muvo because the micro drive has less moving parts and less likely to eat shit... what are your thoughts

my shitty rio mp3 playes works well. i just bought like a 128mb card for it and it hold like 80 songs which is plenty for a day of skiing.

dont get the creatives. they are nice MP3 players, but the ipod is really more useful. it has amazing sound quality, as well as a buch of PDA fuctions, and it has games. best way to kill time in school.

ive never had any problems with my ipod, and ive had it for over a year, i havent broke it yet and i have taken some realy good spills.

d-loc actually said something sorta smart, just don;t put it where you will land on it, like your pants pockets. try the cell phone pocket in your jacket, or a sleve pocket.

i dont have a hard drive mp3 player i have a RCA with 64 mb built it but you can buy a memory card (70$ for 512 mb) and this thing can go through anything, its really small too.

i got an s2 minidisc player its like armour plated you cant break it unless you fly down a hill and get hit by oncoming traffic on the highway even then it probably wonty break

Hef is right, i have a 40gig Creatice nomad zen xtra, and i love it. If your jacket has a pcket on the chest, thats the best place to put it. That is where mine si and i ski with it all day, all year long. I have never had any problems, other thna the first one i bought, the ear phone jack went out, so they sent me the 40g for free when i bought the 20g. I will never need that much space, but oh well

Hef, who cares about the sound quality at 98dB? No one listens to music that loud while skiing, especially when the sound is less than an inch from the ear.

That sound quality just means that overall you will have a nicer sound... not just while loud, I just got the creative muvo2 FM 5gb today and it sounds sick... also cause its a micro drive it has less moving parts and a smaller chance of getting screwed

 
the only shit that breaks on the mp3 players and cd players i go through from skiing and skateboarding is the headphone jack. if it gets worked around enough, it eventually gets to the point where you have to hold the plug in at the right angle for sound to come through both ears, it pisses me off.

i just bought the iPod socks on apple.com hopefully it will keep my iPod warm in the cold days, mabye ill double em up for cushioning when i fall

they have a couple new ipods out too, the black and red u2 edition which is pretty neato and the ipod picture that holds like 10000 pictures and all the songs too. i have a 4th gen 20gig ipod and love it, its been dropped on concrete from my hand and keeps playing. plus i got the 3 year apple extended warrany so if it breaks i get a new one.

 
i had an ipod for one day. I sold it because i was horrified at the poor sound quality.

Anyway back to the point, just get a hard case for it. They are prety durable as is, but the case offers some extra protection and some piece of mind. Don't bother with a soft sase, it wont do a thing in a fall.
