Dumont done for good?

Simons 1st run from last nights final Olympic qualifier. So heartbreaking. He's such a champion! Not sure this link will work or appear. My computer is goofy lately

the fact that he finished out a competition kind of embodies who simon is. he's just a total competitor, and he'll do whatever it takes to get it done. whether it's training, rehab, or pushing through something like this.

love him or hate him, respect him. sad to see

Are you kidding? The majority of the world is not going to see him like that. Henrik is a goofball by anybody's standards. Half the fucking country still thinks weed should be illegal just because they don't like people who aren't even half as wonky as him who smoke. The majority of world is going to mock him mercilessly if NBC gives him any facetime. The old farts who sit in their recliners all day watching cable news are going to say he represents everything wrong with the youth today.

Read the comments on any CNN, FOXNews, or ESPN article. You can't possibly tell me those people are going to be receptive of Henrik.

It's a shame because most of them will judge him by looks. however, in ANY interview I've seen with Henrik he is always the most positive person and represents the sport so well.

I haven't posted in years, but still troll from time to time to check in on some ol pals... That being said, this kids lack of respect for a true legend is just plain sad.. Simon has pushed the sport to the highest level of competition, the Olympics. It was his dream to ski in the Olympics and to fall short so close to that goal & accomplishment is heart-breaking! Not just for him, but all his fans, friends, and family. Give credit where credit is due because love him or hate him, the sport wouldn't be where it is today without Simon!

I remember being 11 years old and watching Simon and Tanner battle at X games... He essentially outlasted through 2 generations of freeskiers past his own still making podiums and having Olympic potential... If thats not insane I don't know what is... Hats of to that dude...

Simons face at then end really made me feel really sad. He looked so calm and sad as if he knew that this was his time.

He was one of my favourite skiers and not just in the pipe, Slumdog illionaire's, cubed pipe, revolver the list goes on.

If this really is the end of his pipe competing then I wish him the best in whatever he does next wether it be skiing or something else. Once again sad to see such a hard working and talented guy go.

and maybe... we could get target to take down add. who else is sick of hearing about "free....skiing" before every 10 second edit!!!!??????

that facial expression... it makes you feel the torn ACL, it makes you feel the end of a career... so sad

fuck the haters, I've always liked Simon and hate to see it end like this

Gotta respect the guy. Given all the Dumont vs Tanner bs way back and the arguments about him being a dick or whatever, I have ALWAYS enjoyed watching that guy ski. First time I saw him was on Forward and still remember a few tricks that really struck me back in the days.

Respect where it is due, the guy has made a huge effort to help freeskiing come where it has come, especially as a sport recognized in the olympics (you can argue about that being good/bad all you want). I hope all the best to Simon and hope to still hear of him in the future!

The Majority of the world isn't just on CNN, FOX and ESPN. You're talking about conservative America... not the world.

Sure, conservative america will not tolerate Henrik. However you have to remember that something nuts like 2/3 of the entire planet's population watches this thing. So like estimates range in the 4 billion mark. (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/09/05/olympics-ratings-47-billi_n_124337.html)

I sincerely doubt that you can lump the planet in with conservative white America. Yes, lots of people wouldn't get him, but there's lots of parts of the world where a positive attitude could get past the looks barrier. As a matter of fact, there's huge parts of the world that would absolutely loathe the american football star-style image that might be put on the face of freeskiing, as likely to them it just means mass surveilance and Predator drones killing highschool students in a ridiculous war on terrorism/drugs.

You can't generalize like that when you're talking about the whole planet.

Haha please enlighten us about how the 'rest of the world' would view Henrik with your expansive knowledge of the tastes and views of people around the world given your experience here at NSers.

You are generalizing just as much as the guy who you quoted.

I have no idea how the rest of the world would view Henrik, I would say just in America the majority would think he is a bit crazy. Not saying I share that stereotypical opinion at all, but that's just human nature.

are you joking? if you watch all the edits with henrik and the inspired tour he did and everything anyone who's met him says about him, or have ever peeped his blog the dude's stoked on everything and he just loves skiing and that's what the sport's all about isn't it?

agreed on dumont having an amazing career though

i dont understand the hate. the dude just had a big competitive side to his personality, and so does literally every professional athlete. the dude was nothing but nice off the hill, but once he was in the pipe, he was the competitive version of simon. no shit he got mad when he didn't win, its fucking competitive skiing. you would be too if you skied at the level he did. you gonna sit there and tell me you wouldnt strive for 1st?

the dude isn't gone for ever. he is gonna put together some mind-blowing video parts for sure.

It's a shame he's done. Dumont was the reason I got into this sport, and the first person my parents name when talking about it.

Espn and cnn are not conservative. The little amount of viewers on cnn are not conservative either.

Conservative america already tolerates stupid illiterate thug football players for the most part. They might talk about henrik for 5 minutes, but other than that, nothing.

And what the fuck makes you so sure Bishop doesn't have a pretty good grasp of how other cultures would view him? Dudes been to quite a few places following skiing.

I've also been all over the world and can't think of any country that would judge dollo on his looks more than the US. There are so many goons in sports outside the US (and within) that people totally love, I can see henrik gaining a ton of fans from the Olympics because of his attitude.

Because regardless of what he has done, there is no way he can speak for the rest of the world and assume they are more open minded. Unless he has lived a lifetime in every single country who watches the Olympics, it is pretty foolish to try and claim how they might react.

Lol so you revert your argument to the fact that every individual has their own opinion? The US is easily the most closed minded first world country. Even 2nd and 3rd world countries have moved well past in the states in terms of acceptance. The exclusions being pretty much North Korea and heavily religious countries

Are you stupid?

I never reverted anything. I just stated how it was ironic how Bishop called out someone out for generalizing how the rest of the world would view Henrik who based his world-wide generalizations from a simply american bias point of view. The reason why this is ironic is because Bishop generalizes the rest of the world is actually far more open minded than the US, and yet has really no data whatsoever to support that claim.

And you are doing the same thing: "even 2nd and 3rd world countries have..." really? Did you read that on CNN? See a Gallop poll or something? Are you basing all this shit from just anecdotal evidence? If so I can tell you about the majority of foreign folks who I have met who think all Americans are the same close-minded idiots, which in fact makes them close-minded if they stereotype and entire country like that.

My opinion is that American media may find Henrik to be kinda a odd dude and have a negative view on him, based on the time when he won X-games big-air. And any sort of extrapolation on how the rest of the world may view this dude is utterly pointless and impossible to measure.

I wasted too much time on this pointless shit.

Sad shit for sure.

Time for Simon to start slaying the backcountry and continue to put out banger segments. Gotta hand it to the man, he is one tough dude and a fucking legend.

Simon's face on his final run almost made me tear up, he is the one guy who was still on the scene from when I first started paying attention. A true legend with a decisive end to a competitive career. Coming into the Olympics, to see this legend compete would have made me happier than anything. Simon is the man, and its tough to see him leave.

I'm excited to see what he has in store post-comp skiing life and once he's healed. I mean look at what Tanner is doing now...super sick things to say the least. Yeah he's a totally different skier but when you have all of that talent, it doesn't go to waste once you drop out of comp skiing.

Bummed to hear he won't be competing in the Olympics. Dude is a workhorse and a great athlete. Also, all you kids hating on him, just think about the event he throws every spring, The Dumont Cup. Can't believe how much work he must put into that- especially when it benefits so many young and up and coming skiers. Guy's rad.

I'm going to say something different. He's had this injury before and come back. He's pretty close to his peak now. He's a fucking machine and loves competing. Nothing says he can't do the rehab and get back in the pipe well before Winter X 2015. Think of it this way, he'll be younger than tanner and candide even at the next Olympics. This doesn't have to be his last shot at the Olympics and it doesn't have to be Tom's either

I'm pretty new to this scene and this really bums me out seeing a guy with such talent not able to fulfill something that he should be able to without a doubt.

Why would you want to change yourself to get exposure on TV?

Why would you want a streamlined & media trained skier to be the face of skiing when the world is watching, when that's not even close to how the majority of skiers are?

Why should we even care about of how skiing is portrayed in mainstream media?

So(chi) many questions...
