DSLR vs Camcorder

I cannot decide if i would like to save up my money for a dslr or camcorder.

I wanna do either as a side project while in school, maybe a way to make a little side cash.

What would you all recommend for ski capturing.

Thanks

a still cam i think you will get results of your shots right away. Filming takes a little more skill both are super fun just to take out though. personally id go with the camcorder

both are two completey differnt mediums. film is sick cause you can review shit that you did like you were there. pictures last for ever and are memories that can be easily accessed and appreciated. I have both a dslr and camcorder. i like my video way more. all personal preference

id also go for the camcorder, but if you want a camcorder that is fun and good to film with its going to cost you considerably more than an SLR. it also takes a lot more time to get a product, but with experience in both fields, i would say videography is more fun than photography, but much more time consuming

It really depends what you're more interested in. Do you want to mainly take pictures but sometimes take movies, or vice-versa? Video DSLRS obviously do both, but camcorders often take ok stills as well. Neither does both perfectly.

camcorder. i have both a conon hv30 and a canon dslr, but i like filming alot more. but its really up to you.

IMO!!!!
I believe the DSLRs are better then consumer camcorders. Simply for the fact that you have more control of the aperture. However the autofocus is terrible which make you manual focus, which isn't bad. However it takes some getting use to. Also most dont have a mic input which sucks.

a low end dslr (say a d40) is for sure much closer to its professional counterpart than a consumer camcorder would be, and therefore you can still get some really great stuff out of it, for not too much cost

film is complicated, and if you want to go high end, go for it, but it is really hard to learn everyhting and toget everything to work

if you want to make money filming, you'll need lots of setup things, you'll need to be renting things, people to help you, lots of time, lots of money, and lots of hard hard work

photography is much more accessible, but, because it is, its getting to be a REALLY over-run medium

nowadays it seems everyone with a dslr thinks they can sell there stuff, and is trying to, way overflowing the demand (at least in some places). film won't usually bring this result as it is far too complicated to learn everything just to be a hobby/ make a few bucks for a year, its more work than learning about still shooting, to an extent

both are very hard to be amazing at, and require work, money, perserverance, lots of reading, and most importantly, talent and skill

good luck and i hope this helps

I was talking about DSLR Video vs Camcorder.
If your just looking at DSLR vs camcorder, go for DSLR. As ftk said, in order to start great video, you need light. Lighting is the key point to photo or video. However in order to make video look like cinema, rather then just using your standard handycam, you must use lighting. Depth of field is another huge part, but I would get into that. For video, ready Bare Bones Guide for Video, or something like that. Its $10 and should help a lot, with both video and photo. Picking up a DSLR would be easier to get into, learn how the camera works and then move into a camcorder.
Good luck and enjoy!

if your looking to potentially make some money, then photography is the way to go, you can also get a nice dslr for a let less money then a camcorder that will give you ski film quality
