Whattup NS,

So i've finally done my time with the compact camcorder, And i've moved on to a big boy camera ( Cannon rebel t3i) and I had 2 main questions.

1.UV filter?

I am mainly going to be shooting on the slopes, and was wondering if i should pick up a UV filter or somthing? I am using the kit lens at the moment and I'm wondering If i need one, and what exactly am i looking for, and hopefully it can be financially friendly?

2.Batteries.

I'm thinking i should pick up a couple extra batteries for those long days of filming, but i was wondering what to get, and more specifically are those $5 batteries from Hong kong gonna be alrigtht for my camera? and are they worth buying?

Thanks for reading, and if you have any further advice please let me know.

those batteries have worked fine for me, i suggest a better lens but the kit lens will work ok i guess. a uv filter is good, mainly to protect the glass. a polarizer is nice for skiing, and you definitely need a tripod with a fluid head. glidecam-optional but nice, ultra wide angle- also optional but nice. class 6 or above sd cards-also needed

You need this.

what brand are those? I think I have the same ones, their fine for filming, 1080p 24 and it worked perfectly.

Here's what I consider to be essential accessories for HDDSLR users:

UV filter

at least 1 extra battery

16 gig class 10 (one or two)

if you're shooting with a tripod and glidecam, QR plate for interchangability

Durable pack

Other accessories that I highly suggest having:

Shotgun external mic or remote audio recorder

ND filters

Polarizer filter

Decent tripod

POW photog gloves (nifty in winter, picking up a pair of the mits I think)

Battery grip

Lenses that have my stamp of approval:

Tokina 11-16, Canon 17-40, Tamron 17-50, Canon 24-70, Canon 24-105, Canon 70-200, Canon 50mm, Sigma 30mm, Canon 80mm, Canon 100mm Macro

Other nice things to have, not necessary at all:

Follow Focus unit and rails

Lighting/Generator

XLR adapter

Feel free to add to the list folks

^Truth. Liam, I'd really suggest you replace that kit lens to start.

Tamron 17-50 F2.8 is great.

Canon 50mm F1.8 is cheap and performs really well for $100.

6.5mm opteka/bower fisheye is also dope, minimal colour fringing for a fisheye.

Old pentax lenses are great too, their fast, cheap, sharp, all you need is an adapter.

For stabilization you could always build your own rig until you can buy a glidecam or other stabilizer. If your down to build this hit me up, i'd build one too and from what he said about the parts you get like double what you need to build one.

you need a tripod/stabilizer. Kit lens is usable, but you could sell it, assuming its IS, for $100-140, and then the tokina 17-50 goes for not that much more when you take the cash from the kit. IMO, I just hated my kit, so much happier with my fast primes.

i sold mine for 90, bought a 17-50. but that was after i got some stabilization. (tripod) just get the tripod first

Haha, thanks man, but I'm probably gonna have to keep the kit lens all winter until i can afford a new one next summer.

Even if you don't get a UV filter get some kind of filter just to protect your lens. I put a filter on one of my lenses the other day and the next day I grabbed my back off the table, it was unzipped and my camera fell out and the filter shattered all over, but the lens was perfectly fine. Filters are very important!

how is the life on those 5$ batteries? Oh and if you are poor make a glidecam..I just made one for my t2i..it cost like 16$ and only took a couple hours..it also works perfectly and was super easy to balance..stoked..
