Driving a stick

okay, I got my license a week ago. my car, which was formally my brothers, is a '99 corolla standard. I've been driving this corolla around a lot lately, trying to get the hang of it. I just took it out for a little drive, and mananged to stall out 5 times while trying to come out of one street. yeah, then I was on my street, practicing starting on a hill...that sucked..I would roll backwards about 20 feet before I would revv the engine then stall out, restart the car, rev it again, stall out again, restart, then finally get it. someone please tell me that driving stick gets easier! I'm having the worst time with it right now, and I need to get it down so I can actually drive my car.

i got good in 4 days and by the way evan or pussyfooter has gotten in to 3 crashes in a year of driving so dont take ne suggestions from him

you need to realize that the first 3/4 of the clutch doesnt do anything, and your probabl taking your foot off of the last 1/4 of the clutch too fast or your letting the RPMs get too low at the end of the clutch, so wen your in your car on a flat road or something just let the clutch out slowly with the car in gear and keep letting it out but dont pu any gas in it and just look at the RPMs and wait until you can feel the car shake or you just see the RPMs start falling, and then you will know when your clutch kicks in, and then you can practice taking your foot of of the first part of the clutch slowly and then increasing the RPMs and slowing down the clutch release for the last 1/4 of the clutch, then you should be able to start easier

OH YEAH? WELL I GOT GOOD IN TWO AND A HALF DAYS! pwn3d.

Its easier if you just think about doing the opposite with the clutch as what you're doing with the gas. As you push the gas down, let the clutch out proportionally.

The first time I ever tried to drive a clutch I did not stall it untill maybe on my 10th try. Too many people either release the clutch too fast or too slow, try this next time. Push in the clutch all the way, put it in gear, give it a little gas and start releasing the clutch, if the car starts to spudder then stick the clutch back in and re-try to release it a little bit slower that time. If your cars engine is reving a lot when you try to go then release the clutch a little faster. Do this in a parking lot some where, just over and over, practice taking off untill you get the timing right. But if you can't get a hang of it after about 20 trys get someone to assist you before you ruin your transmition.

thats the easiest way, and it should be the 1st thing you learn about your car, once you find that sweet spot and can find it very easily your golden.

thanks for the advice!!! its all good and helpful.

yeah, I was driving with my dad yesterday and he just said every time the car is starting to stall, to push the clutch in. that works, some of the time. I guess I just have to give it more time, and not get so pissed every time I stall out.

it took a few days of driving each day for about an hour to get a solid hang of it. You just need to go on a back road then for like an hour straight start->1st->2nd-> then stop, then repeat, eventually everything gets easier. At first you think, how the hell am I going to drive this in cities and in parking lots, but soon it just gets easy and you'll be like wow I can't believe I thought this was hard

just takes practice. when im on a really steep hill i like to just not use my foot brake an just pull up on the e brake that way you don't have to rush your foot form the break to the gas

It was already said, but it has to be repeated. Put the car in gear, and slowly let the clutch out until you feel the point where it catches. Your revs will drop and the car will shake, and eventually stall. AT this point you either put the clutch back in to do it again, or you hold the clutch at that point, give it a bit of gas then release. It's much harder to describe driving standard than it is to do. You'll catch on quick, and when you do it becomes a lot of fun.

haha, yup. i just gotta 01 VW gti 5 speed. no problems whatso ever. ive put over 1000 on it, and stalled it maybe 5 times since. and yes, once you get it, its SOOOO much fun. i rode dirtbikes alot as a kid, and i found that leaning how to use the clutch on a dirtbike is mmuch easier. if you got a freind with a dirtbike, learn on that to figure out how it works and what your actually trying to do. then, when you get in your car, youll have a better understanding of what your doing.

i got so fucking frustrated when i first started driving stick, but you'll get the hang of it really quick. i've been driving stick for 5 years now, and i refuse to do otherwise. it's way too much fun.

when you're at a stop light going up a hill, and you haven't mastered your clutch yet, use the parking brake so you don't roll into the guy behind you. Its kinda cheating, but it works

I got it pretty good when my dad explained to me that I should rev the engine up and then slowly let the clutch out and the car should go smoothly. Don't start on hills just yet if you are still having trouble getting into first gear on the street. You'll just frustrate yourself. Go to a parking lot or really empty streets and practice stop and go, any gear after 1st is a piece of cake because you don't have to rev the engine up to go since you already have RPMs at 3-4000 anyway. When you have the stops and goes, get comfortable changing gears faster and faster on the road and highways and then once that's down comfortable and you feel confident move onto hills. I always find it helpful to park my car with the wheels turned into the curb to stop the car from rolling when i take into first gear or reverse so I don't roll into another car.

HOPE THAT HELPS AND HAVE FUN ONCE YOU HAVE GOT IT ALL DOWN!

--Can't wait for Ski Season 05/06!!!!--

just keep it pined and never let it out just push the clutch in when you want to slow down and stop but put a brick on the gas then you wont have to wory about it killing

aww i need a cool signature so i can be cool so ever one will like me if i had a cool signature then if i like saw some chicks from ns they would be like hey theres the kidd with the cool signature let give him a blow job and it would be like the hotest chick on ns hey this is kinda starting to look like a signature dang well i geuss i have a cool signature makeing this signature usless becacase u have a cool signature but if i delete in then i wont so i would need it think about that one almost filled now

oh, and if you get your revs up to like 7000 at a stop, then drop the clutch, you can peel out like it's your job

^ you shouldn't be revving the engine at 3-4 starting out!!!!! my car doesn't have a tach, but around 2 is all you need to get moving............ because when you rev that hard you slip the clutch until it's fully engaged, and that wears it like a bitch. when you're learning you do it a few times, but that's a horrible practice to get into.

start out driving around a parking lot in 1st gear, and stopping and making tight turns.......... then do 1st >2nd upshifts.......... then once you've found that sweet spot, work on starting out in 2nd gear..... THAT will get your feathering skills (feathering between the gas and clutch evenly; in on one as you go out on the other) down to a science............

Good luck, ask here if you've got any more questions........

i learned on a dirt bike and in a beat up tracker when i was a kid. i just got my first new car with a stick and ive only stalled once or twice in a month

hahah. i remember when i learned how to drive a stick. it was in the killington parking lot after skiing a few years ago. my dads friend was really drunk and decided he was gonna teach me. it was super funny.

but ya. youll get good at it. it just takes a lil while.

oh and the stalling thing. ya . i was on this really busy road. and i was at a red light.. i stalled so many times the light went from green to red again. hahahhaha. talk about embarassing.

my eclipse is front wheel drive but i can still peel out, especially when im on a hill.

I heard it's not good for your clutch to start out in 2nd gear, I'm not sure on the reasoning... can anybody out there that knows what they are talking about back that up?

Yeah it get easier 4 sure. I learned to drive on a stick. The key to starting off on hills is to learn to put the clutch and gas in just enuff so that u dont roll back or forward, it's hard but once u get it hills are much easier. Good luck

What you need to do is go to san fransisco and then find the steepest hill you can find and practice on that. but seriously when starting on a hill first quickly move your right foot off the break and depresse the gas apout 1/4 of an inch before gently easying off the clutch while smothly acelerating.

Find the "friction point" where the clutch engages, it'll move the car a tiny bit, play around with that and you got it.

its not too tough to spin your wheels in a front wheel drive car, the hardest type of car to spin your wheels in would definitely be a awd car, but even those arent hard

yea, and then when you get good you can start heel-toe downshifting and double clutching, although i doubt you'll need to do that in a corolla.

^^ its much easier to do it in a camaro or mustang, i have done it in those, i have also burned out in a jeep wrangler. that was cool. rw kicks ass, i have seen a 8.3 liter viper with 700 hp(modified) burn out not moving for 5 seconds not using a brake

pssh I'll show you how to drive a stick. IF YA KNOW WHAT I MEAN

hahaha stupid dolphins.

yeah its easier to do it in any car with more power

It gets to be second nature, and when you get there it's totally worth all the stalling out. You also get better gas mileage because there's no torque-converter bullshit going on.

I drive a Vespa and it has a manual transmission... it's even more fun than a car because the clutch is operated by hand. You can do wheelies and shit.

I also get 90 mpg, bitches.

ya its a bitch for the first month. then youll get it. i always get an equal balance of clutch and gas on hills so i wouldnt roll back

im 15 and my dad is teaching me to drive a stick, and it is the fucking hardest thing ever, especially because the clutch in my dads truck is possibly the worst clutch known to man

peter, those are cheerios

heres a fun trick to try once your get decent at driving stick (follow above advice, alot of these guy know what theyre doing)... try shifting without the clutch. board shiftings a bitch to learn so do it on someone elses car first. the gear rations overlap at about 25 to 27 hundred rpm, and where they over lap you can slip the stick out of one gear and into the next without the clutch. its sick if you get good at it cause you can quickstick so much faster.

yuck, you'll be known as the pussy from this day on if you do that. Do something manly, like cut her initials into your chest or something.

Lineskier10, not all clutches engage after pressing 3/4 the way down, in my dads Passat you only have to push down 1/5-1/4 the way down, it feels way smoother.

If you're starting on a hill don't be afraid to use the hand brake to start er out. and if possible, learning on a Diesel is way easier, it can idle at a far lower speed making it harder to stall out
