Drinking age 18 maybe?..

that would be sick if a millionaire said he would cover the 10% dip in funding if they lower the states drinking age to 18. I think thats how im going to give back when I'm rich

click on the little map they have, california, florida, new mexico, and hawaii all say you can consume if your under 21

You realize if we were to change the drinking age, an entire generation of Americans would get fucked over. Most people start to drink when its illegal, making it more appealing. If it became legal, we wouldnt instantly stop drinking to get drunk, we would continuously do it, making an entire generation of kids fall victim to the new drinking limit. I'm sure after a while the drinking would mellow out, but its impossible to change the limit at this point without making drastic sacrifices. And i think its smart that the age is over 18 (21) because most seniors in high school are 18, making it all the easier for teen drinking to get out of hand.

fuck no! If youre legal to drink and still getting blackout youve got some problems. Half the fun... ok mnaybe 5% of the fun is that you are underage. Getting it is another 5%. Which reminds me... PM if you want to be over 21... cough cough

I agree....half the fun is drinking underage...but weeds harmless..alcohol can be so much worse...and plus I only have like a year to wait to I dont rlly care.

that would be so sick im only 5 months from 18 haha but it would never happen same with pot being legal..would never happen usa has so many rules and people brainwashed.

i'd support it. but yea, one generation would be fucked by the switch

and i don't think it would do anything to stop underage drinking, because if the age was 18, even younger kids would start drinking earlier

that would pretty much be my generation which would be sweet...

but it doesnt matter, in my experiences....

people that i know that are 21-30 drink to get drunk, sometimes casually not often.

now people 30+ i know like parents and shit, dont drink to get drunk but drink beer to drink it. it would be no different. like my dad drinks beer just cause he fucking likes it not to get drunk as do my uncles etc.

the way i look at is, you can smoke at 18 and that damages the body just as much if not more than alcohol. and at 18 you can join the army and go die at war, so either raise smoking/enlistment age or lower the drinking age

I think if your old enough to die for your country and vote you should be able to drink. everyone knows that it happens anyways once kids get to college. we might as well make it legal and teach better responsibility rather than expecting them to not drink when kids are drinking everyday every where. From my understanding countries with lower drinking ages have less problems with alcoholism.

If teenagers are barely responsible enough to drive at 16 or so, I think leaving the drinking age at 21 is a good idea, but has it's major downfall. Those that want to drink will always find a way around it, Prohibition never worked.

Did you notice that almost 70% of the people voted to lower the driking age, for our parents the drinking age was 18 and the seem to do fine.

18 is too young... so many seniors are 18, then you have alcohol all over high schools. Not too big a deal as far as I'm concerned, but no self-respecting parent whose little Billy is going to High School soon would allow it.

Make it 19 though... fair, and keeps it out of high schools. To be honest I'd drive drunk less if it were legal because I wouldn't have to worry about being some place early the next day or whatever it is because I'm not supposed to be doing it... I could just drink. Legally.

That may be true. Although there are a lot of poor decisions that could result from a lack of responsibility while drinking. They are both abused though. I am shocked everytime I drive, how ignorant and terrible the average driver is. Unnattentive and selfish. Now look at underage drinking, poor decisions are made all the time. Kids are born, jail sentences handed out, cars are crashed, people die, because they're trying to have a good time?

it'd be sweet if coors or busch did that for the states the operate in (colorado, missouri).

i remember pete coors tried running for office here in colorado to lower the dinking age to 18. he was not elected.

i'd hate it if bars were crowded with more under age kids. if the drinking age were 18 there would be 15 year old girls going to the bar sending scum bags like me to jail. fuck that.

I agree that the driving age should be raised, the drinking age...that may work out for the better. Maybe if teens learned to be responsible drinkers before responsible drivers the world would be safer?? Hard to speculate.

I agree the driving age should be highered. But it isn't always the young ones who don't know how to drive. I have more of an issue with elders driving. I think they should have to re-take the test after a certain age.

As for the drinking age, no I don't think it should be lowered to 18. Teenagers are immature as it is, and could never be able to handle this responsibility. With the driving age at 16, there will be more drunk drivers on the road, guaranteed. My opinion.

I also agree that elderly people should have to retest every so often, every year personally. Unless they have a traffic accident, then it should be evaluated on a case by case basis. And it's not that young people don't know how to drive, it's they lack maturity and responsibility while driving. Common sense is a better word.

I find it laughable that you think I was singling you out within the WHOLE teenage society. Your average teenager, is immature. Don't try and deny that. Say you go to a party, and legally drink. With people your age. Are they all going to be mature, and responsible? No.

I respect your opinion, and I can say that I agree. With the parenting aspect. It's about how you raise your kids, yes. Sheltering them will only make then explode with freedom when given the opportunity.

But they can't speak for the entire teenage society. Like I said before, your average teen is immature, sheltered or not. And giving them the power to abuse alcohol (which they do, I have seen many a thread on here, and many situations in life) is not a great idea. Unfortunately, most American teens would not be able to handle this responsibility.

name one person you've met that waited until they were legal to have a beer. seriously, that's unheard of. maybe they waited until they moved out of their house, but they're still underage. do you, as an 18 year old, have a problem getting booze? No. okay, then why are you complaining? because you're considered underage and get in trouble if you act like a dumb ass drunk? (being excessively loud, fucking up property, fighting) when you could buy cigarettes was life so much better? wait till you're 21 and have this argument. i wanted to be able to drink beer legally when i was 18 as well, but now i appreciate the drinking law and i'm 22. it's amazing what a couple years will do. going to bars all the time is over rated. when you turn 21 its the same as being 18 and drinking. you drink at home with your friends because its cheap and you don't need to drive home at the end of the night. the new option avilable to you is that you can get to chose to get raped at bars and restuarants for liqour. SWEET!

In some states, like Wisconsin for instance, you can legally drink with your parents in a bar if you are 18+ and have your parents consent.

switzerland = 16 for beer and wine, plus 16 to drink any hard liquor, just not to buy, and 18 to buy all liquor. also 16 for cigarettes.

that is amazing. anyway, i think i'm exhausted with this thread. it's not a terrible law. i do like the idea of parent note to drink beer, haha. good job wisconsin.

You're exhausted already? You only posted a few times dear. Is the reading getting to you? Go relax and have a beer...settle your mind :)

After reading the responses I think the best way to go about it would be to make the buying age 21 and the drinking age 18. That way you don't have a bu8nch of underage people crowding bars, spending inordinate amounts of money on alcohol because it's too accessible, etc. I'd also really like to see what would happen if the driving age were made the same as if not higher than the drinking age... I think it would make people much more responsible about both... unfortunately there's no way to do that without massive amounts of money, time, and lobbying.. aside from the fact that you risk nationwide chaos.

your a big bitch ashley. not really, but yeah mercer go have a beer. im 17 and im drinking as i type this...just shows how tough it is to get booze.

In Alaska its legal to drink if you have parental consent.

The only reason its 21 is because some parents were too emotionally skewed to accept the fact that their own stupid kids died from drunk driving. Instead they had to go and blame the government. The U.S. passed the law to shut them up and make them happy. Don't even get me started on how corrupt and fucked this country's legal system is.

"God bless" America.

i dunno about the driving age thing. I possibly could've gone without drinking until i was 21, but it would've been really difficult to not drive until I was 19.

The parent's permission thing is too hard to enforce. It's not too hard to make a fake ID, and it's really really easy to make a fake permission document.

And honestly, I don't mind the 21 drinking age. I just turned 21, and obtaining alcohol isn't as much fun now as it was the last few years. It's just too easy. That said, it's nice to have the ability to focus on the alcohol rather than focus on getting the alcohol.

Canada, with a drinking age of 18 or 19 and Europe where its pretty much 18 across the board, have far fewer problems with teenage alcoholism than the United States. It sucked waiting for 19 for me. I was finished a year and half of university before I could drink legally. If I went to school in the states I would have finished 3 and a half years. That's fucking retarded.

If you can vote and help choose who runs the most powerful country in the world, AND you can fight and die and legally KILL other people at 18 you should be able to drink. Not much more responsibility I can think of than basically being hired by your government to kill other people. There really aren't any good reasons not to allow this. Teens are going to drink. Might as well let them do it at the bar where they pay for their drinks (and thus usually consume less), and are overseen by bartenders and bouncers, than in the basement of some house with a bunch of sketchy booze and retarded drunk friends looking over them.

Plus it means more revenue for the government. Everybody wins.

Yes, teens are going to drink. But I'm sorry, there's no way I want 18 year old retarted drunk kids in the bar I'm chillin at trying to enjoy myself. Though I understand the being overseen by bartenders and bouncers. Still won't change the fact that they are immature. And irresponsible. Allowing them to drink legally won't change anything but the fact that they now would publicly drink.
