My girlfriends had this headache for a few days so she went into the doc yesterday. After 9 hrs or her getting blood test and brain scans she had to have like 6cm needle run through her spine so they could test her cerebral fluid to make sure there where no infections. it turned out negative, so thats good but she still has a gnarly pressure headache.

anything like this happen to anyone else?

i almost passed out watching this thing go in, she decided to do it with out any pain killers.

swedish healthcare win, only cost like 40 bucks for everything

1. its a spinal tap. That is one tough chick, those hurt like a mutherfucker.

2. great news its not meningitis or anything serious. hopefully just a sinus issue or the sort.

3. I have sinus issues that can sometimes completely plug my ears, make my eyes feel like theyre popping outta my head, and make my head feel like its gonna explode. It also seriously fucks with my balance haha. Maybe its a sinus issue?

4. Im in the US. It would have been a $20 copay for the intital consult and then $20 for as many tests as it takes after that = $40. USA Win!

yea i lived in the states till now. you must have damn good insurance. getting any type of scan anything, mri cat, etc has always cost me over 500$ at least and I have decent health insurance

my health insureance kills it.

I had a consult with an orthopedist, an xray, an MRI, and a meniscus surgery and the whole shebang cost me $140 out of pocket. Rx drugs are also a flat $10 no matter what they are.

Good luck to your girl, hopefully its not serious!

A spinal tap does not require expensive scanning equipment or specialized doctors to perform, hence why it was only $40 bucks.

And anyway with socialized medicine it is not just 40 bucks you are paying more for it in taxes.

Like mentioned a ove that would be called a spinal tap. I had one a few years ago when they thought my lyme disease might be meningitis. Suprised they had her sitting up for it, usually they have you lay on your side. Either way props to her, shit sucks.

Providing more pictures (I win at the internet) Good job OP, she seems like a keeper.

Moral of the story, protect your identity kids. It's to easy to find personal stuff on the internet nowadays.

lol that's her back..

but yeah spinal taps are serious business when it comes to pain

glad she's ok though man

Don't want to scare you but my cousin was having problems of a really high pressure headache, had tests and a mri scan which showed that he had a brain tumour just behind his optic nerve.

damn i feel like a pussy now, i had a steroid injection in my wrist once and they gave me the choice of going to sleep for it and i was seriously considering it haha

I had something very similar happen to me when I was 17. Absolutely horrible headache, couldn't even stand up, a really high fever, came on in only a few hours, they gave me a spinal tap and they apparently fucked up and had to do it again, it hurts like a mother fucker, one of the most painful things ever. It wasn't meningitis, I ended up staying in the hospital for a few days and it went away, never found out what it was.

And I'm in canada so it was absolutely and completely free

I believe it is similar for epidurals when a woman is in labor so lots of mothers have had them

If you had a spinal tap and it hurt the person doing it was a moron. You use a small amount of lidocaine, same as when you get stitches, and go into the space between the vertebrae. Not super hard unless youre fat and they can't find your anatomical landmarks

* lumbar puncture

and shouldn't hurt since you freeze it before you stick the big needle in. They let med students do it without practice within a couple weeks of being on the wards, really not that big of deal.
