based on what i saw on cnn a few weeks, there isnt a target date set on re-instating the draft, but it has been brought up as a possibility because of the shortages of volunteers. and whoever said we had plenty is just plain wrong. we have been spreading out troops so thin that we have been re-routing troops from bases in other countries for the past 6-8 months, most recently from south korea.

its like this, we have alot of people in the army, its just that theyhave all been really spread out all over, like iraq, afgan, people for the jails in cuba, and where ever else we got beef with. also, after pearl harbor, alot of guys went and joined the army, after spetember 11, alot of people went out and bought an american flag or donated blood they didnt join the army. thats just how i see it.

todays more tecnoligicaly advanced millitary dosnt need a mass of soldiers as it did back during the vietnam war or the world wars when we last used the draft. there are plenty enlisted soldiers to fill the needed positions. the only time we may need a draft was if we are stuck occuping iraq with a significant force for a number of years while we went to war with our next potental target, north korea and we still defenatly wouldnt need a draft.

That's a common misconception. For every technologically advanced weapon that can shoot around corners, see through walls, etc., we still need a soldier to carry it. And unless we just bomb them all (civilians included) into oblivion, we're going to need just as many soldiers as we would in any other war, regardless of the time period. The Iraqis aren't cavemen... They have guns, too.

For those of you with the 'defend our freedom' argument... How is going into Iraq defending our freedom? Saddam had absolutely no way of doing anything to us... his missiles have an effective range of a couple of hundred miles, he had no way of transporting troops onto our soil, and he turned down an alliance with Al-Qaida. He couldn't and wasn't going to touch us. Now we have a bunch of loosely organized freedom fighters on our hands... with even less chance of doing any damage to the US. The only reason American civilians are being beheaded is that we are still in Iraq, after invading it without reasonable cause.

if we want to keep the situation under control, a draft may well be necessary. Our military isn't invincible, and as other countries pull out of Iraq, our current forces may find themselves without enough men. Unless we want to deploy every soldier we have (a bad idea), we're going to have to get some more troops from somewhere.

I'm glad I have a British passport... because I'm sure as hell not going to break off my college education to go kill Iraqis in a war I completely oppose, for a president I couldn't have (I wasn't 18 at the time), but certainly wouldn't have voted for, even before he got us into this mess.

And now, as if Iraq wasn't enough, he's trying to sink gay rights.

If I ever had a chance to talk to Mr. Bush, or any other Christian who supports the war (especially those who are against gay rights also), I might ask them what they think about Exodus 20:13- 'Thou shalt not kill'. I'm not Christian... so I might be missing something, but that phrase seems a bit beyond 'interpretation'. It seems a bit hypocritical to simply use the bible to oppress his fellow Americans, and ignore it when it suggests that killing thousands of people might not be the best thing to do.

If anyone ever wondered why I'm wary of religion... well, that's why.

um no you won't. the bill states that higher education will NOT be a reason exemption. if this is instated, if you're ANYONE (male or female) between 18 and 26, you can be drafted regardless

I'd go because I have friends in the national guard in iraq and it'd be an insult to them if I dodged the draft like most of our elected officials did in Vietnam. (Except John Kerry who pulled a guy out've the river in a combat zone)
