Alright guys so help me out here. I landed on my hand yesterday skating. I fell with my arm pinned to my body and my right hand (the top of it) got the majority of the impact. I can move my fingers, I can make a fist, etc. But the bone in my palm where my thumb is and the same one where my pinky is hurt like fuck if I touch them. And this is why I'm typing this, if I put any weight at all on my hand its in pretty bad pain, and oddly enough if I'm standing and put my hand down by my side it's in excruciating pain in those two places.

I'm thinking it can't be broken because I can move my fingers, right? And if it were just bruised it wouldn't hurt when I put my hand on my side? And I don't know how I'd get a sprain with the way I fell and where the pain is, so what's the deal? I figure a lot of you have landed on your hand before so any experience this?

I would wait a day or two. If the pain goes down, youre probably okay. Its hard to tel though, so you might want to go to a doctor just to be safe. Hope you feel better!

Dr. Newschool is making a homecall at the moment.

Will you wait or should I patch you through to Dr. Oldschool?

I wouldn't rule out it being broken. You could have a hairline fracture. I've broken my foot before, and my big toe and I was still able to move it, it just hurt when I moved it. I'd go to a doctor

It's a broken foot. broken feet make the palm of your hands hurt like that. you'll have to stay in a wheelchair for the next 5 months and eat only overcooked cabbage while it heals. if you don't then there's a firm possibility of turning autistic.

that. there's tons of little bones in your hand and there's lots of nerves that can be pushed on if something is moved just a bit. try some ice, go get an x-ray.

we've been talking about homologous bones of the hand between humans and pretty much everything and my god... so many bones.

xrays are in order. just because you can move your fingers doesn't mean it isn't broken. any time I've broken a finger, I've still been able to move it, but it hurts like a mother fucker.
although, realistically all they are going to tell you is that it is or isn't broken and probably send you on your way. there really isn't much you can do with an injury like that. best case scenario, you score some vicodin out of the deal.

broken would just hurt like hell, you could still move it.
sprained would hurt like hell and be uber swollen
bruised would hurt like hell, you could still move it, would probably have various colors happening.
Go to el doctor. At the vary least they will give you a brace or tape it so that you can't move it so that it hurts less.

I think you have an attitude problem, son. But luckily I've got jus' the cure for that: good ol' leeches. And young missy here, see, if you wanna lollipop and a solution to your problemos, you better mosey on down to my clinic and get that sweet little kitty paw o' yours checked out good and clean. Chop chop, move it, we ain't got all day.

Could be something like a pinched or aggravated nerve. Could be scar tissue in your wrist (I had the same as you and that's what it was) or you could have a small fracture of one of the bones in your hand.

well the fact that it hurts when its at your side make me think its one gnarly bruise on top of a hairline fracture.

Good news is that metacarpals heal really fast (my 5th [pinky] metacarpal healed in like 2 weeks, and it was nearly compound). So you can just go to el medico and get a splint or cast, which are usually pretty small for hand breaks, and be all good and ready to shred in no time.

sounds like really bad skiers thumb. dont know if thats a common term, but it happens a lot from landing on your hand and having the thumb bend back. it could be broken, but if its not, it should stop hurting in a couple days. ive had it 3 times already this season and the pain doesnt tend to last more than a few days

could be fractured for sure. i broke the bone in my hand that's below my thumb and i could still move all my fingers pretty well.
