Dr. NS lung edition...

i don't feel sick, then i get these sudden urges to cough.

and when i cough, i cough so hard i can't catch a breath, and i start to choke, then after i gasp for air a couple times i stop coughing and start to breathe normally...i feel like i'm choking whenever i cough and i asked my dad what was wrong and he asked if i smoked, i don't so i said i didn't then he said you'll get over it.

i've had this cough for 4 weeks now and it happens frequently throughout the day, i'm wondering if any other ns members have had a cough like this, and if this is serious enough to go to a doc about. i'm just getting nervous because i almost passed out today from coughing.

The problem is you have a rasta icon and don't smoke, smoke or get rid of the icon and you'll be good to go!

Asthma? Hey Asthmatics, is it possible to develop that shit all of a sudden like this?

Also dude, consult a medical professional. Your dad's great and all, but you need to get this checked out.

On a serious note, yes it is possible to develop asthma all of the sudden. It happened to me, and on occasion I will even develop a cough like the one OP describes but I just puff my inhaler and I'm all set. OP go to the doc

Though about 75 percent of asthma cases are diagnosed by age 7, asthma can develop at any age.

These people probably had very mild, intermittent asthma in the past, which presented itself as a cold, and was wrongfully but understandably not diagnosed as Asthma.

go see a doctor and get an inhalier, mucinex and some other powerful drugs, you most likely have a sever sinus infection.

Asthma is a definite possibility as is bronchitis. Or you could you have what my brother's doctor termed a 'persistent cough' which apparently tends to last 6 - 8 weeks and is nothing to worry about. Did yoi start out with a cold and have the cough linger after? That would point towards the bronchitis side of things. And as someone asked earlier is it a dry cough?

this. get some mucinex and normally i'd say wait it out. but since it's been over 3 weeks get some antibiotics from a doc. don't let it go for too long. i got bronchitis once from ignoring it for to long.

clear or colored?

clear often = viral (yet most of the time thease are short lived...so not likely the problem if its been 4 weeks) OR means that there is something else all together

discolored (esp green/brown)= bacterial infection.... get some antibiotics from a doc

i had a similar cough recently, and it turned into a dry cough. It could be nothing, but get it checked out because you dont want to have pneumonia or something.

In the spring I had a cold that lasted a long time but then I kept coughing after all the other symptoms had gone away. It got real bad especially with exercise, after a track race I coughed until I magged. so at this point I go to a doctor and he diagnoses me with post-viral bronchitis and gives me a puffer.

puffer helped but I kept coughing after every race or hard workout I did so I go back and he's like yeah probably athletic induced asthma. so now I just use the puffer after and sometimes before intense activity + heat.

didn't read thread, hope that helps

If you smoke a lot it could be bronchitis. If it is go to your doctor, he'll hook you up with some antibiotics and an inhaler. I had I once when I went on a smoking binge

Serious question, can you get chronic bronchitis from smoking weed? Cause i've had this wet cough for 4 weeks, and even stopped smoking for a week to see if it would go away and it hasn't. It started as a dry cough for about two weeks then turned into a wet one after I had an "allergy attack". No mucus comes up but I can feel it in there and sometimes when I breathe in slowly I can feel it "gurgle" then it makes me cough. I've taken robitussin but it doesn't seem to help. Just wondering if anyone has any insight on here before I head to my infirmary....

yes. you have to quit long enough to completely recover/heal. I had bronchitis for about 8 months one time. The coughing got so bad that I got costochondritis which is the worse thing ever and mimics the pain of a heart attack.
