Alright, so I hit a tree with my shin at Keystone two weeks ago after a "pow" (heavy sarcasm) day (Also, don't ask how I hit the tree). I skied perfectly fine for the rest of the day, but it was really swollen. So later that night I ice like there is no tomorrow, and I've been icing is every so often. Like a week ago I lost feeling where I hit the tree, and it is kind of sore. It's not bruised now though. Last night I got new boots, and I wore them all day today while I was teaching. My shin swelled back up, and I really have no feeling there at all yet I skied perfectly fine tonight.

So...

Really swollen.

Kinda sore.

Not bruised anymore.

No feeling where I hit the tree.

Should I just keep icing?

Thanks, yo.

you could have bruised or possibly fractured the bone. i would keep icing it, take motrin, and if it doenst get better in another 2 days or so, go to a licensed medical professional.

I would say keep ice on it. Thats what I would do. Is it fully numb or more like "pins and needles"? I had that once in my lower leg/foot and it was just a pinched nerve. Realistically though you really really should go see a doctor, especially if you cant feel your shin at all.

Well if I put enough pressure on it with my hand I can feel it, but it doesn't feel like "pins and needles". It doesn't hurt when I flex my ski boot or general walking and running.

BTW Thanks guys.

you might have over iced and killed the nerve endings on your shin. did you ice to a point where it started burning and then kept on icing?

you'll be fine, but it won't feel very good for awhile. deep bruises like that take a long time to heal. especially if your boot touches it. i'd guess 2 or 3 weeks before it's back to normal. smoke some chron to help it heal faster.

might be shin-splints or a real bad case of shin bang.

ice, heat, ice, heat. just keep alternating.

get some epsom salt from the store and pour some in your bathtub and soak your leg in it. it helps.

take some glutamine pills. it speeds up recovery time for muscles. i used to take em all the time when i played football.

you still have feeling in your toes? from 0 to 10 how much pain you got (0 being no pain). You still have full range of motion in knee, ankle, and toes? Any discoloration in skin? When does it normally hurt, be specific.
I'm pretty sure I hit my leg like that before and i think i broke my shin bone slightly (got a weird dip in my shin now), I never did anything for it, but ice it. As I look at it now, I shoulda went to the doc, but it didn't bother me much. This sounds like a bone injury, i would just ice, no heat (20 minutes on, 20 mins off). Then doctor, better to know even if just a bad bruise, especially for future instances of hospital visits. I'm a Medical field student but it's just my opinion not for sure saying i'm right but best advice anybody can give is see a Dr. but make sure your pain level is within your thresh hold

I just got secondhand.

I'm going to wait another week. Keep icing. No heat. Might do some Epsom's because that ALWAYS seems to work for everything. It's definitely not shin splints, but I know I have some shin bang in both shins. Yes, I still have feeling in my toes. I didn't expect it to swell again because it actually isn't hitting my boot, it's right above.

did the same exact thing last year but i was on track so i was training and gave myself a stress fracture which sucked so my advice is dont go on any long distance runs

Ooooooh, I've heard of this... you'll have to amputate. It's okay though skiing's not that fun anyway.

Ive had a deeply bruised elbow (possibly fractured) for about 2 months now. It has the same sort of numbness feeling. There isnt really too much you can do about it, and if there is no functional loss, I wouldnt worry too much about it, but Know that it will probably be bruised for a VERY long time especially with the boot. (I keep hitting my elbow and re-swelling it.) But just sack up and ski through the pain.

Put Arnica herbal cream on it to bring out the bruising, keep icing it and I advise you see a doctor you could have stuffed the nerves to have no feeling in it.

i did something similar to my knee fell of my bike going really fast and hit my knee this happned in may and its still numb you probably just damaged some nerves when you hit your shin

Alright, so it's really stupid how I did it. It's a day after we got some snow so I decided to have some fun in the trees. I'm following my boarder friend through and my right ski catches on a rock. So basically it was either wrap around and hug the tree or fall to the left. I decided to fall to the left, and I double ejected. Stupid.
