DPS Spoon- next step for ski technology?

go look it up they are releasing the ski this year and it looks pretty crazy. Has not only regular rocker but rockered sides. Kinda hard to explain but is this the next step for ski technology just as rocker was a few years back?
 
I personally don't think this will catch on, I don't like the idea of having edges underfoot only.

Looks like lots of fun in powder though.
 
It's a wicked cool idea.

But as far as it being the next big step? Not so sure about that. It might gain some momentum, but it's a super specific design concept that doesn't appear to transfer well to other parts of the mountain.

I think the bigger advances will come in terms of new materials/construction methods.And, I think companies will continue to experiment with early rise, flex patterns, and tip/tail taper designs. The new profiles that some companies are coming up with are where the real progress is coming from in my opinion.
 
If you mean its forked then thats not new... my uncles had those since like '06.

And the spoon is such a cool idea! but the thing is, does that technology really make a noticable difference?
 
Does it not have edges on the edge rocker? or do you just mean edges that actually work.

I don't really get how this benefits in powder, unless you like skiing sideways it's just going to reduce float.

Not exactly a great price for something new.

no this thing. see the tip/tail are hollowed out? apparently that reduces tons of weight and stuff
 
I cant exactly answer your question but if the whole ski is edged, have the edge would be rendered useless.. From a carving standpoint if you have the edge slicing through the snow at multiple levels like it would with thew kind of wave this skis has, carving may actually slow you down? since the edge would be going in different directions at different places on the skis... make sense? also i think it may make the ski more out of control and dangerous on groomed runs cuz your skis edge could catch at a different place at any given turn and send you off in a different direction... Now im not sure about either of those points, but I also have spent time racing, and that edge stuff makes sense to me in that aspect.
 
Yeah, but removing the edges severely weakens the construction of the ski, interesting point about the angles, I don't think the forward edges would do anything but from what I'm thinking the back could do serious catching.
 
Yeah i agree which is why i think that the whole thing needs an edge.. and this is hard to explain without having my hands to show you, ya know? but if the edge of the ski goes like this:

On the various points that do hit the snow then depending on your pressure on your ski, how far forward your leaning, crud, ice, endless factors, one ski could engage on say the middle slash, and the other on the first, for example. and that would cause your skis to split apart from each other and your laying there with a torn groin. this is all on groomed stuff however, and i doubt that could happpen in powder, so there shouldnt be too much problem, its just something that i saw could cause some bad things
 
some dude on the funitel the other day said he had a snowboard that has that design too.

sounds awesome in pow--less edge catch, more surfy feel, easier butters. it'll be interesting to see how it does on hardpack, if that's even possible. sounds horrible for skinning as well.
 
Ya I know quite a bit of snowboards have rocketed sides and good point with the skins, that wouldn't work at all... The spoons have "cleats" too so you don't fuck yourself on hard snow but just imagine floating a turn in pow without having a flat base
 
Snowboarding has been doing this for a little while, namely battalion .

It will catch on eventually, the soft snow performance is unreal.
