in my dorm i have two ethernet ports. can i plug a router into one of them giving me more ports, so i can run my xbox and laptop simultaneously? i tried just connecting an ethernet cord to the router and then plugging in my laptop but it didn't work. is there anyway i can do this?

maybe you are using the wrong ethernet cable

why don't you call the computer services department of your school and get them to set it up for you

ask your college IT, I know mine has you register your xbox's mac adress with them, and others do other things.

Most colleges won't let you install a wireless router. Check with IT on your options for this. My freshman year a kid a few doors down from me installed a router in his dorm and the university revoked his internet privilages.

alright heres what we did last year. We arent allowed to use routers on the network. At the beginning of the year I registered my xbox's mac address on the network and then I got a new 360 later in the year. To get the router to work on the network you'll need to change the mac address to something that already works. After that everything we connected to the router worked just fine. You can also just use a switch or hub.

if you have a wireless card in your desktop/lappy i believe you can bridge the connections wirelessly and do a type of ad-hoc network.

This is right up my alley. When i was in school i worked for my schools IT department and helped kids liek you out. More than likely your school will not like you hooking up a router, but you should call and ask them. Every school has different policies and different consequences for breaking the rules.

if you plugged your comp in and couldnt get it to work it could be for a couple of reasons. a bad cable, a bad card, a bad port (or they just havent turned them "on" yet, or if your comp was on a network at home you might need to set up for the new network at school. there is an easy to walk through wizard that might do the trick in internet explorer go to tools then select internet options go to the connections tab and then at the top there is a button to setup a new internet connection. from there you may need to run the internet conection wizard and choose an always on broadbad connection and you may also have to run the set up home or small office network.

there are a lot of other possible problems including spyware and viruses affecting your computers connection or the school requiring you to do something special before being able to connect.

well my computer works fine. in terms of getting my xbox to work in the first place, it doesn't. whats the deal with this MAC address, what is it and how do i register it, and with whom for that matter. i'm lost in all of this.
