Dont worry about global warming ruining the ski industry

with how high gas prices are and how high they could go. Ski resorts are going to start losing moeny because less people are going to be traveling. with ski resorts slowing down that means less people will be buying equipment and spending in the towns that they are in. I think gas prices will hurt skiing more than global warming

^^ yeah but doesn't most of their revenue come from the once a season weekender or day tripper?

those are the ones that rent - 3-5 days and they own their own gear, correct? the thread creator makes a good point. Resorts would do themselves well to organize/hire buses to bring people in.

The Proper name is Climate Change
so while gas prices will hurt the resorts
The Shifting Currents (if they are shifting) will cause the colder artic waters to travel across the East coast of the US bringing with it the Artic weather and therefor more snow and colder temperatures
thus people would be happy to travel to the resorts dumped in snow

h these gas prices im seriously thinking of only going to killington every other weekend. i have an hour commute and even though i love to ski there i have school bills and other expenses. what really bums me out is having to hear my dad talking to loads of people on the phone and how he may start going up to vt to ski way less due to cost. hes skied there since he was a ski bum and its just sucks he wont be able to go as much.

True, I never thought of resorts organizing buses for people. I think that would help save gas and encourage more people to go to their resort since they won't necessarily have to drive there.

word, gas prices suck, but if you can afford to take your family skiing and buy lift tickets for the day or weekend you can afford the extra cost in gas. The people that it will have the biggest effect on are season pass holders, people who will have to cut back a little bit but the resort already got your money so the less you ride the less it costs them. Also it might cause more ski areas to offer shuttles which would be nice for a lot of people.

Many resorts are taking initative and are going green. I remeber when I went to sumggs this year on their maps they had symbols for green(ethnol, hybrids, etc) for their machines. Hopefully all resorts could do this and gas prices would not be so significant and help to global warming.

no ethanol cats....no hybrid cats. All still diesel. And dont forget, when electric goes out, lifts run on diesel generators as well. Oh and theres the diesel that our entire trucking system runs on....as well as trains.

The biggest effect it will have on destinations resorts, ie. Whistler, Banff, SLC areas, will be due to rising flight costs because of the price of fuel. Say that family of 5, traveling from the UK, has to pay and extra $150 each on airfare alone next year than they did a couple of years ago. Thats an extra $750, a lot to your average vacationer.

I think it will have an impact for sure. I worked at a major resort this past season and was surprised how many skiers we had who didnt seem to have huge amounts. It will impact the industry for sure, how much it will is yet to be seen.

I think we'll also see an impact in larger resorts that are close to major cities but where they have smaller options much closer, such as Lake Louise and Whistler. I dont think even at this rate it will make a huge impact for a few years though.

laws of supply and demend might have them coming down as neighboring mountains compete for each others ticket.

I really think the smaller hills are going to get hurt the worse.

in my opinion, raising gas prices are going to affect many resorts, but not mainly from travel, more because of sky high diesel prices. resorts require a great deal of diesel fuel to run their machines, snow cats aren't quite as efficient as a honda civic... obviously those larger resorts who are taking initiative and going to alternate fuels have made the right decision in this case. so yea, when you undoubtedly see some higher ticket prices at resorts this winter, it may be due in part to decreased travel, but it isn't the only issue for the resorts.

I think its all going to come down to location sometime in the next few decades. Both in terms of climate and in relation to major urban centers/surrounding ski areas.

Gas price has an impact in a lot of outdoor sports.

Let's say a family saves 1000$ a year to ski.

Now let's say that they spend 600$ more this year to pay for their gas and food(I'm talking during the whole year, not just ski related). That 600$ will usually be gained by cutting in their leisure budget(such as skiing). I think that yes the ski industry will be affected just like others. How much it will be affected? We don't know yet.

the people who fly out to ski places won't be affected at all, they can afford to fly out rent a place and ski there gas prices are the least of there worries. I don't see gas prices affecting mountains that much people wise

Whoa, when did the PC police get here? I mean, we can't call terrorists...well terrorists anymore, they are insurgents. Don't want to offend the terro....err...insurgents.
