Don't Pump -- May 15th

I've been waiting to hear your verdict. I kinda always knew in my mind that this wont do anything to gas prices. Really, its more of a public protest than anything else.

"We don't want to spend so much on your product but we'll continue to pay ludicrous prices regardless!"

"I think this is expensive but I'll buy a ton of it anyway!"

"I'm a moron if I think this will work!"

Haha, dude, as I said, I dont think its going to do shit to gas prices. If we want any real change, its going to have to be through the government or something.

I am going to fill up thee tanks of gas on the 15th you pussy bitches. Don't you realize that oil companies are AMERICAN companies. Gas prices in the US are outrageously cheep compared to other advanced countries and provide billions of dollars to the US economy every year.

Not pumping for one day will not accomplish anything and you will only hurt yourself you dumb ass people.

i'm here jus to post to say that I will be going out of my way to top off my gas tank on my car on May 15th...

I hope someone yells at me that day for doing it too so I can ridicule their retarded ass to their face.

yeah ive been telling people and they all make fun of me for this. i think it might work if a TON of people do it tho

think about it like this...

alright so lets just say on average people fill up once a week. so first of fall, not even every person is even planning on filling up on may 15. so even getting every kid you know to do this wouldnt do anything at all, especially considering the adults make up the majority of the country and not kids. so really this wont do anything unless somehow you could get it nationwide and to every age group rather than just kids. and in reality you know that would never work.

Do some of you jackasses STILL think this will do ANYTHING?

You will all look back at yourselves when you take a college economics class and realize how supply and demand and consumer spending patterns ACTUALLY work.

I am going to make sure I need a full tank of gas on the 15th, just to spite all of you.

stupid idea? dont be hatin its agreat idea even if it doesnt do much who cares will it kill you nto to pump for a day?

See, what annoys me about things like this is that you really do not get how big business works. You think because 500 or even 1500 people don't spend money on gas for ONE day, you're going to damage the oil companies? Let me lay something out for you:

1. Tuesday is a low-business days in most areas anyway.

2. We're talking what, 60-70000 at maximum not spent by 1500 people in one day. If Exxon could afford to give their former CEO a 400 million pension I think they can afford 70000.

3. So who gets hurt? The little guy. The gas station owner. This is the stupid thing about boycotts, because the only guy who loses money is the guy who has to write down "no sales" for a full day of business. Since that may be some of his paycheck for the week, all you're doing is taking money away from an honest worker who's just trying to make it at an honest job. The fact that his honest job is run by "oil tycoons" doesn't really matter and they won't care for a minute that he's screwed by your boycot

a big thing.. i saw is on myspace (the place for emo kids) a week ago or so. i wont get gas that day.... the companies will just have a shit ton of supply and then they will have to drop prices in order to sell more gas.

I am sick of people complaining about gas prices here is why

1) Everyone wants to save the environment. If gas prices are increased people will drive less thus reducing the amount of green house gas emissions. Problem solved.

2) If you look at inflation gas prices are well below the curve. If you want to bitch and moan about gas prices then make sure you bitch and moan about ice cream, cars, clothes, snickers bars, and everything else.

3) A good majority of the price of gas is taxes by the government. If you are an American then your taxes are very low on petroleum products. Look at Europe gas prices are somewhere around 5-9 dollars a gallon.

4) The US economy is integrally connected with the oil and gas business. You think that those Florida oranges drive them self to cost co? We are completely dependent on trucking. Where do you think that gas that cooks your food, heats your house, and provides you with electricity comes from? On top of that petroleum companies employ thousands of people and give more money to environmental research than any other organization.

So stop your bitching and ride a bike if you don't want to spend money on travel. Stop thinking petroleum companies are out to get you. There are they to provide a services in a competitive market and make a profit just like any other company so if you want to rage against the machine go live in a cabin in Montana with no petroleum influence and see how long you last.

You're an idiot if you think not buying gas on "May 15th" will help with gas prices. You're not giving up anything, only shifting your demand from what would be Tuesday to another day of the week... if you even needed to fill up at all.

Also, New York State Teachers' Retirement System for example has 21+ MILLION shares of Exxon Mobil in their portfolio. Not only is it one of their top five holdings, but it's also one of the best preforming. A major reason teachers retirement benefits get paid is because of dividends like Exxon Mobil give out... Do you realize how much these big businesses save the local tax payer? The value of the stock is worth $1.7 BILLION... and it pays dividends.

Did any of you know Exxon Mobil has increased its dividend payout for the past 29 consecutive years? Further, do any of you realize that businesses like Exxon Mobil get taxed and that money goes into federal/state/local programs?

hate to burst ur bubble but there have been studies that prove that things like this dont work. prices fo down for a day, but then go up even higher that before

Exactly, this idea reaks of economics ignorance.

To reduce the price of gas, we must reduce the demand in the long term, which a single day boycott wouldn't do. Unless people actually change their driving habits (or replace inefficient cars) to reduce the demand, people will simply wind up buying their gas May 16th.

To protest this economically unsound protest, I plan on topping off my gas tank on May 15th.

The whole point of this post is that people need to buy less gas wherever the fuck you live. Thats all its trying to get across. If you want to take offense because people dont want to buy gas, then fuck off. Its our money, if you want to blow all your money on gas, be my guest. If gas prices are going up, shouldnt everyones payrate be going up too to counter the inflation? Well that doesnt really appear to be happening as fast as the influx of gas prices.

So what alot of people work for petroleum, im sure they could find another job if they had to so that argument is moot.

You cannot tell me that the petroleum companies actually want the common man to save money. All they think about is $$$, so fuck you.

They are basically making money off of mother earth by pulling all of our fossil fuels out of the ground and then selling them to us for like 20 times the profit.

Exactly, people are actually getting offended because we dont want to spend all of our money on gas. fuck you. Seriously, like I said, if you want to spend all of your money on gas, go ahead. Who gives a fuck about how 'economics' are supposed to work. We are humans and the only way we can make things happen is to take action, whether its boycotting something, protesting, writing letters etc. Why are people getting offended because they dont want to spend their money on something they used to be able to get for like $1.00 a gallon two years ago?

if only we had a day like this, but instead it was titled carpool/bike/public transportation day. that would be quite commendable. i find myself wishing i could do something as simple as not filling up for a day and it affecting oil prices, and even though i complain about gas prices just about everyday, i still continue buying gas, and that is the problem. we complain, complain, complain, but till continue to buy gas. c'mon people, instead of having may 15th be a day where you dont buy gas, have it be a day where you dont use gas, or try and cut down on your use of gas. carpool, turn the a/c or heater off, dont accelerate quickly, take the bus. sure, dont buy gas, but it doesn't do anything unless you dont consume gas as well. And as for the oil companies taking a hit, i think i heard exxon mobil made 39 billion dollars last year in pure profict, after taxes and everything, so one day would really be futile. It has to be a change in our lifestyle.

im actually quite interested in your job and knowledge on the subject. what variables really do have an affect on gas prices, because this is a topic i never really fully understood. for example, ive heard that refinery problems have caused the recent spike in prices, is the true or myth?
