Don't Pump -- May 15th

Good idea in theory, but here's how people are gonna think...

"oh right, don't pump tomorrow...better top her off today then"

What we have to do is decrease the need, as soon as we use less of it, the price will go down. Some places are already getting it, and making things like city buses and cabs more efficient. Thats the first step.

I agree. Not buying gas for a day isn't gonna do anything, because everyone that does it is just gonna buy gas the next day. To actually make a difference, you have to stop buying it altogether, or at least reduce your consumption.

gas prices are rediculusly cheep here. our government should tax a hell of a alot more out of it then it does. go to europe and buy gas you willrealize how cheap it really is over here.

if you don't have any compitition in the market, how does supply and demand have anything to do with how much you charge for a good? The seller can charge whatever they want and they can control the supply artificialy increasing price.

if you want to pay upwards of $4.00 a gallon (which aaa predicted was possible this summer) fill up on may 15th

even if you don't think it will make a difference, what is the harm in not putting gas in your tank?

if you do find the needle on E, just make the effort not to suport Exxon/Mobile gas

i have got multiple chain letters to this effect, and with different dates, didnt notice any price drop though at the pumps, good luck but oil has you by the balls.

Actually its opposite, thats the whole point, did you just skip the whole thread to post that very intelligent comment?

suppose you noobs are right and gas prices drop after the 15th, wont they shoot right back up after the 16th when people buy their gas again?

wouldnt everyone just fill em up on the 14th, increasing the amount of money made from people filling their tanks for the 1 day strike?

No one in the US has the right to complain about gas prices. Here in Canada, right now it is about 1.15 a liter, or with alittle help of unit conversion 4.34$ a gallon

No one in Canada has the right to complain about gas prices, because in the U.K. and Australia it's more expensive.

actualy if it is 1.5 CAD per L it is equated to 3.39 USD

and canada hasn't been fighting wars to keep low gas prices, so you don't deserve them duh.

So? It doesn't make sense that the price would go up. When demands goes down (less people buying aka no one pump for a day) the price goes down.

i don't think suply and demand apply here, the gas compaines that decide how much to charge are not limited by the crude oil supplys... there was a concern about a lack of refineries, but for the most part opec and what not artificialy raise the price so they can make more per barrel becaues they know we will pay whatever they want, which is why exxon mobile earned $36 billion dollars in profits last year.

Number one, you are stupid as shit. Using a .80 conversion rate, which is low, but a guesstimate. 1.5(.8)*3.78(Litres per gallon)= about 4.50 US, I don't have a calcluator, so that's a rough estimate. You said, "let's try it, what is the worst that can happen?" Well for one thing, it is completely useless. Gas went down 30 cents in one day? Correlation doesn't prove causation. This day has been happening for about 10 years and nothing positive has happened, who came up with this idea? Michael Moore's retarded, idealistic cousin? Fucking think about it for one second, how would one day where overall consumption isn't reduced hurt the oil companies? I don't need to be fucking Stephen Hawking to figure this out. Also shithead, demand is only fixed in the short term and supply for oil isn't fixed. There are several other viable means for producing oil when it reaches certain price levels. Oil producers have only up until a certain ceiling to price fix to, and most of the countries in OPEC will start selling far cheaper to increase profits before that ceiling is hit.

Sorry I meant to add a conclusion: In summation even though this sounds good when you explain it to your little group at high school during lunch and they think you are smart for telling them of the idea, in reality you are fucking retarded.

Why do you think gas prices go up in the summer? More demand. Why do they go down in the winter? Less demand. It's pretty simple actually.

Re: High Gas Prices OMG!

Dear USA,

Europe as a whole is currently paying 6 bucks or so a gallon for gasoline. Buy smaller cars, buy more efficient cars. Somehow, we all seem to manage our day to day lives with a station wagon and public transit. Even when we're out in the middle of nowhere with long distances to travel, we manage to drive cars that use less, pollute less, without any decrease in functionality. Carpool. Hell, walk places that are less than a few blocks away, ride a bike. You may kill two birds with one stone on that one.

Stop whining.

Yours truly,

EU

agreed.

it would need to be many millions of people not filling up for a day to even hit the sides

hybrid cars are useless. They have no resale value because the battery only lasts 6-7 years and the cost of a new battery is equal to a new car

are you fuckin kidding me? to fill up here its 80$ and when i went to new york last weekend, where it was 3.29 it only cost 55$ to fill up, your a fuckin idiot there more then 2 liters in a gallon.

people not buying gas one day will increase the demand for fuel when they realize they are idiots and have places to be the next day

fuck you dude i fudged the math a little but you didn't even do a full conversion on your side either, a L that costs 1.5 lunnies is equivilant to a $3.9 gallon not $4.34 idiot nooberface

your $55 fill up in NY really cost you $61 vs. the $80 in Canadia

as for supply and demand in summer vs. winter, in the winter people use oil to heat their homes a lot more than they use oil to heat their homes in summer, so all that extra driving you do durring the sumer, could be countered by the need for heating

plus not that this would really play any part on gas consumption more of a tip for you who fill up, but in the cold weather gas condesnses so when you pump your gas in the winter you get more "per gallon" than the gallon you get in the summer... or translated to when you fill up your tank, do so in the early morning when it's coolest out vs. in the middle of the day.

cool idea but i doubt it works and we dont get most of our oil from the middle east, its canada and like central america or something like that. the problem with this idea is that we are too dependant on cars. everyone will pump gas the day before and the gas stations will make an equal profit. youd have to do it over an extended period of time to make a difference, but that would never happen unless we start taking bikes to work...

NO, it WON'T. If I can't buy gas on May 15th I'll have to wait to buy it May 16th...I'm still buying the same amount of gas it's just a different day. The same amount of money is going in their pocket.

I support movements like this but after looking into it for less than a couple minutes.... its pretty clear what the answer is:

If you want to boycott oil don't buy from Exxon Mobile--- seeing that a complete boycott is impossible, boycotting the largest company is something that possible

i'm down, some friends and i actually just started the first "bike to school day" last friday at my school

I'm down to be honest. Even though they were Peugeot's, the cars we leased in Europe were great. I'm down with turbo-diesel.

THANK YOU for making one of the very very few intelligent posts in here.

The rest of you idiots don't seriously think that the oil companies are oblivious to this, do you? I'd laugh so hard if they dropped gas prices a few cents on May 15th and then raised them up 30 cents a gallon on the 16th for a week.

I only have to fill up every to weeks or so because I longboard or bike for local transportation, and then I drive a car that gets 45mpg on the highway over the weekends when I leave town. The 15th is about the time I'll have to fill up again, so maybe I will, just to spite you fools.

For those of you in college, take an NRPI class and learn something. Economics will have to do for the majority of you, since you're in high school. Seriously, though, you're silly if you think this will work.

Firstly, I am an oil and gas analyst by trade. I do macro work for the price of oil globally. Essentially, I actually writes articles on this subject.

This will do absolutely nothing to affect oil prices. Nothing what so ever. Zip. Zilch. Ha. Ha. Ha. Ha. If you want to help drop oil prices, buy a bike, power your house via solar, avoid big box and franchise stores. This plan has so many flaws that I find it hilarious.

Right off the bat, transportation only accounts for 28% of energy use in the USA. Essentially, whatever effect you think you had on the effect of oil prices, you can more or less immediately cut that to a quarter. This is only if you don't use the actual gas on that day. Buying the petroleum on the day does nothing. You would actually have to cut your consumption of petroleum on a day. If you manage to use a 1/4 of your normal gasoline used for travel by taking public transportation, congratulations, you've cut your total petroleum use by 21%. Wait though, you know all that food that is in your fridge? It was shipped in a truck to the store where you bought it, probably from 1,000's of miles away. Everything you purchase was shipped in trucks. The mail you receive was shipped in trucks. This is where a huge bulk of "transportation" use comes from. If you cut the amount of gasoline you use to 25% by using more public transportation, bicycles and carpooling, its doubtful you're cutting your energy use by even 15%, for a single day.

Lets do a little math here. The United States uses ~21,500,000 barrels of oil per day (boepd). The world uses ~85,000,000 boepd. Suppose you were able to cut your energy use by 15% for a single day. Lets suppose EVERY American consumer participated in this activity. The United States has used 18,275,000 boepd on this particular day (21.5MM boepd *.15). This gives a surplus of 3,225,000 boe. The world goes through this much oil in less than 55 minutes. The surplus oil would be injected directly into the inventories of the United States and giving a HUGE boost of less than 1% of total American oil inventories. This would probably not affect oil prices by a goddamn penny. Not a single cent.

However, a 15% cut in energy use is actually quite commendable over the long term. This would affect the price of oil if enough people were to cut their usage. Most developing nations do not give a fuck about gas prices or emissions. India and China will continue to have a great affect on oil prices year after year. Buy a bike, buy a hybrid, shop locally if you want to have an affect.
