Don’t become an audiophile

My dad was really into hifi audio and it rubbed off on me. I started off with his wilson maxx 3s and my life was shortly ruined. Every song I listen to on my speakers i ruined for me because anywhere else it’s just not the same. I now have wilson Alexx V. I have learned It is the most expensive addiction to have. I’m warning those who invest in it don’t go over 5k in your setup. Be happy with what you have because it will never be enough. Every tv in my house now has at 5.1 to 15.4 channels. The pit is endless.

Welcome to the world of GAS. Oh I know what your thinking. Why the hell is this dude here talking about farts. Well, im not. Youve entered the world of Gear Acquisition Syndrome or maybe you've already been in it for years with skis, youll have the same tendencies elsewhere. With me it was skis and then the disease spread to camera gear. Thankfully im a good photographer so it was worth it. Who knows what hole ill be in next. Maybe it will be my PC in upgrading parts. Ive also been a bit of an audiophile recently but the spatial audio on apples air pod pros is quite epic and a uniquely new experience to me and im enjoying it quite well.

Honestly with skis I got my nomads and i see no other better ski. I sold my airpods because i just can’t deal with how bad dolby atmos is on them. I won’t lie head tracking is fun but if you want to get into audio get a klipsch system in your budget and never go to an audio store and test some other speakers you will sell them immediately.

I also have a pair of sennheiser in ears as well which were around 450. They always sound epic

I'm intentionally remaining ignorant, but I do have a 5.1 so when people don't even have a soundbar I find their tv sound completely unwatchable.

Audio stuff is fun if you understand the mechanics behind how electronics and sound works instead of throwing money at stuff. I have a dedicated stereo system with Klipsch LaScalas and run it off a $30 Class D amp and a bunch of sound treatment curtains on primary reflection points. At the end of the day I get bored from most movies after 45 min but can listen to music for hours.

Why do audiophiles and wanna-be audiophiles feel the need to go around telling everyone that they are one?

There's some weird pride thing to it and they always try to share it in this subtle off topic way. Nobody cares.

I got a good deal on them used and had some extra cash laying around. But yeah buying them new is basically burning money on plywood.

Why not upgrade the amp?

I dont really need to. With modern Class D amps they sound really good as long as you dont drive them too hard. I have all the parts for a top of the line DIY Texas Instruments Class D amp and chassis but I need to find time to put it all together.

how many amps is it. I feel like you would get a roll off in the low range and it’s just a good idea to overpower speakers from my experience you can just use lower gain to have better detail and fuller sound. but i’m not an engineer and i’m just talking anecdotally out of my 16 year old ass.

Its a 20W amp but my speakers are 105 db with 1 watt so I dont need to crank it up at all. Even at 1/4 its too loud to listen to. The LaScalas roll off pretty high so I have a 15'' ported sub and a 250W amp running it for the low end. Eventually I want to take the sub apart and build a horn loaded sub but that is down the line.
