Does Anybody still love to Rip Bumps?

my home mountain doesnt have any clean bump runs but if you go out west, like every hard run, (not including chutes and other "big mountain" terrain) has bumps on them.

I love skiing bumps but it seems to me that almost every bump run is the same. it gets boring. same thing goes for racing, i love carving and going hell-a-fast down a steep long groomer but its gets boring.

what im trying to say is that first "newschool" skiing progressed into bumps but we realized that its hard to progress any further so we moved into park and b/c, big mountain, etc.

yea i hate to say it because bumps are a large part of the roots of freestyle but, they look pretty gay, are bad for your knees, and dont particularly help your skiing abilities. that aside they are kind of fun, but i would personally rather ski groomers or park than bumps. which may have a lot to do with the fact that im terrible at skiing bumps haha. that may have been a really biased response so sorry to all the hardcore bump guys.

I'm just curious how you think they don't help your ability? i mean, i'm biased too because i am one of those hardcore bumpers, but i feel that just being around people who are that much better than you can only help you get better. Groomers are great, they're fun to go really really fast on, but anyone can do that. You hop onto a bump run and get your shit handed to you, you're going to learn something.

Granted, if all you want to do is stay in the park all day, true, a bump run doesn't hold too much in store for your abilities. But if you'd like to go ski the steepest stuff you can find, drop cliffs, and be able to take on any face on the hill, bumps are a great training ground.

word i respect that idk its just that after i ski bumps im really used to like a completely different motion to turn etc and it really doesnt seem to apply to any other terrain

Or when your at the top of this super killer run, mougls, soft, steep....

Then you you kill, and when you pass the guys who are taking a break, you hear them say, "Hold on a second, Watch these guys, they are AMAZING".

True story.

Sorry,

Gotta disagree with you on this one. As probably the oldest person in this thread and a lifelong bumper I can say without any reservation that bump skiing IS what makes you a better skier on ANY terrain. You learn how to turn quicker than on any other surface, you learn about quick edge to edge control in a constantly changing environment. Its this control you learn in bumps that kinda helps out when you're about to drop a chute or when the nice snow under your foot turns to bulletproof ice. Bumps teach you how to keep your upper body silent and let your legs do all the work. Once again, by having a sound stance, and silent upper body, you wont get in the backseat or flail around like a rag doll on any kind of slope, something I see way too much out of the newschool these days. Bumps aren't for everyone and that's fine, but the fact is there's a reason that not everyone can rip them, you either have the quick feet, and the downhill vision or you dont. Good luck.

bumps and trees are amazing, u are only a true good skier when u can eat up all kinds of terrain, which has to include bumps

exactly.

i'm a bumper. straight up. i don't like racers much, but that's just the dynamic i grew up with. but the same way i don't like racers and racers don't like me, neither of us can deny that bumps and gates are two of the most technically challenging aspects of skiing, and that being good or trying in either discipline makes you better in the other, and therefore on all fronts.

Moguls are dope and will make you a better skier.

moguls are what made me a decent skiier i rekon

i never skied moguls in comps or anything, but i used to love hitting moguls, especially after a light pow dusting

being a good skiier is about being able to ski all disciplines IMO

I donbt want to start more hate on this issue, because ive stirred the pot waaayy too many times on this in the past, but there is a seriosu problem in this sport with kids who cant ski out of the park....as soon as these guys realise that true progression in the park will come from having solid all mountain ability and technique, the sooner the sport will progress

without doubt, in years to come, i rekon the kid who can rip park, but cant take it to the mountain (and especially the pow), will get no coverage. once progression hits this point, vid segements and comp results wont even go close to being achieved by the exclusively park rat

ya man i totally can relate to you...i'm so happy i learned how to ski before i started jibbing, for example i went to pc this year and we woke up with a foot plus and i went out and ripped bumps and it was sooo sick, always remember where skiing comes from and take a run to enjoy it

i dunno about it dying, it seems on the east at like loon last year more and more bump runs were created, they actually knocked off some decent kickers and such to add a bumb run(under the kanq quad if you remember). that was disappointing but i like a bump run now and then, its just no good when i'm a little bit soarer the rest of the day cause of the run.

Ripping bumps as fast as possible, just teetering on the edge of control, just may be some of the most fun I've ever had. Competed in bumps for 3 (4?) years, got shit results, but love it nonetheless. To whoever it was that said bumps are lame on a powder day, you've obviously never skied sick bumps in sick snow. Valentine's day dump this past year I ripped bumps pretty much all day.

I love moguls. sometimes at killy they'll spend a few days spraying cruise control and for a few hours some of the most fun bumps of the day form. they're all nice and powdery. even though it's barely a blue it's still fun. plus it's a pretty highly used trail and most of the people using it don't know what a mogul is and it's sick to rip past them down the entire thing. yeeah.. but then they groom it and it turns back into an ice rink. cascade also can have some good ones when it's not groomed. they were so high, and the gondola so low in that area that my sister came close to hitting her head on the gondi. if she didn't ski away it would have bashed her.

I hate them, but I'm a snowboarder convert who hated them on snowboards

they annoy the fuck out of me and I usually avoid them at all costs

bumps are fun occasionally but i mean i love just ripping a fat line with steep, large turns with a cliff. it just gives me a rush that bumps can't.

I dont like bumps that much, they get tiring for me

that doesnt make me a bad skier because i dont like bumps tho...

dont get me wrong its maddd fun shooting off bumps into a mogul line and seeing how fast you can cut through em, they're just not something i would do all day

Bumps are a real good time.

I suck at them, and wish i would spend more time getting better because they make you such a better skier overall.

There is nothing like a sick ass line in the bumps. Also, when I am beat, I will throw down a groomer to rest and relax. I will ski anything I don't give a shit.

yeah, it helped my technique in tight trees too. you know what suck though, skiing on an overcast day without high intensity lenses on what appears to be a flat groomer and suddenly these moguls pop out of nowhere.

One time I skied all the bump runs off C-Lift at the Jane in one day... I could barely walk afterwards. Im not great at bumps and thats why i love them. They are a challenge and they build some serious quads!

you best be talkin' bout Mary Jane. I love bumps, nothing like hittin up some MJ and tearin' some zips.

I read that 5 times before realizing by rip you were saying the people that hated on them, not the people who could rip them up. I agree.

i ski bump sometimes, i realy prefer chutes and trees and bc though, park is fun but it kinda can get boring sometimes

i rip my old vinny d's down the bumps all the time, I love it, but my knees......not soo much

no way skiing perfect cat made lines gets boring and shit all looks the same its way cooler to be able to make your own line down a field of moguls that don't have great lines where you have to really focus and be good at skiing to know what your doing. moguls are definitely still really cool mogul comps just got gay cause everyone has to look the same skiing the same line with the form that the judges think is right and that shits not freestyle.
