Does Anybody still love to Rip Bumps?

Hey Guys,

Correct me if I'm wrong, but It seems like a lot of the "newschool movement" (which I am not intending to rip on in any way as I'm sure I'm equally a part of it) has kinda been hinting towards bumps being lame, old news ect.., is this true? I noticed in an issue of Freeskier a few months ago in an interview, the interviewer asked the skier (I forget who), "would you ever be caught dead skiing a zipper line through bumps?", and I though "hey, if you can, who WOULDN'T be caught skiing a clean, fast zipper line down a sick bump run?" I guess times are a changin' though, I don't see many kids my ago ( early 20's) focusing on really rippin' bumps and getting real comfortable in tights trees, ect... I dunno maybe I just haven't been skiing with the right people, but it seems like every time I am hitting a gnarly bump line at A-Basin or Breck or Vail most of the guys I see are twice my age. Don't get me wrong I love the park too, buy is there a place in freeskiing for new-school skiers with old school skillz? :)

Interesting in hearing responses,

Peace,

Phil.

word, i love ripping the bumps, but it is becoming a diminishing trade. its either bc, park, or race now a days. w/evs it leaves more bumps for us

i ski bumps every day i ski. if there's good snow i'll hit up the bowls (patrol chute, copper, for example), but i'll ski as many lines as I can. When I teach, I generally teach my kids not only how to rip bumps, but also general bump etiquette, etc. (i teach 4-7 yo.s at okemo). but i live to ski bumps.

I think it's a dying art, especially in the midwest, where I'm from. Most places don't even have them. Some places try to build them with a groomer, they make them 8 feet wide and 3 feet tall and they wonder why nobody is skiing them!

The fact that I can ski them sure makes my trips out west better. I can't imagine how long it must take these midwest park rats to get down a black bump run out west. They must skip 30% of the resort terrain out west!

One of the greatest ski experiences I had was ripping a bump line out west after it had filled in with powder! That and ripping a bump line in the slush in the spring, having the snow just explode off you.

Whatever makes you happy I guess!

its all about bumps when they're good, and nothing beats nice trees, it is becoming a lost art though

bumps are fun now and then, but are usually just a means to an end (the lift). if you've resorted to skiing bumps you're either 1) from teh EC and takigna park break/are bored 2) can't find any leftover pow 3) haven't had a storm in a while

only 1 and 3 are forgivable

i have to agree with both of your points. when powder's around i go looking for open bowls, steep tree runs, and cliff drops... definitely not bumps. i do, however, enjoy the occasional bump run. on the other hand, you'll find me in the park long before you find me in the bumps on days with no powder.

with the trend of skis going bigger and wider, bumps will get more and more left out. Im a really big guy, and so my two pairs of skis are some first gen pistols and last years maidens... obviously not what you would call bump skiis... but the bumps are still a good time for sure.

i love the bumps. especially when you stick to your line and rip it apart. you just feel like the mother fuckin man at the end

i like park more, but of course i like bumps who doesnt they are so fun, especially when they are built up nice for a comp with the jumps and you hit em before the comp thats the best time to hit em

Racing is my guilty pleasure.... and carving like crazy.

Bumps were always just too... bumpy... I dunno. I never found it smooth.

Most likely I just sucked at it.

bumps are super fun. i couldn't stand them for the longest time (because i couldn't ski them correctly), then one day it just clicked and i could do it fine. it's an awesome feeling ripping a huge bump line right under the lift.

I used to rock bumps alot, but I dont like them anymore not because there "not cool" anymore but I dont see the point of ducking into a bump feild and wrecking my knees all in the name of riding the hill much slower. I rather cook down the hill and catch some air or rip pow. BUt thats just me.

any skiing is cool man. if thats what you like to do, (and i do too) that what you should be doin. i think it takes a really good skier to be able to ski bumps good and fast. (myself not included :)

wurd, im 17 and got my csia lvl 2 last yr, bumps and trees are awsome, most ppl just cant, or have never had the opertunity to try or get proper instruction.

The people who criticize bump skiers and say "mogalz r gay" are the people who have no clue how to get down a good zipper line. But to answer your question, I still occasionally ride a pair of these:

I love to ski bumps its so much fun to just tear up a mogul run. But, I enjoy bc/pow/cliffs kind of stuff better than both park and moguls.

I love bumps at first they scared me when I was younger but then my dad took me to the top of a run and said pick ur line and go for it and then he left so I learned quickly to like em.

ive competed for the past two years, but i had to quite this year because it destroyed my knees. but i still love bumps, its just that when you get to a certain point in mogul skiing, its almost 100 percent guaranteed that your knees will sustain some sort of injury, so i stick to other stuff now adays

ive competed for the last 6 years but i suck so now im giving up to just be a soul mogul skier. yeah! cant wait

Hell yeah! there's not much of a better feeling then knockin out a line of bumps and then looking back up at what you've just done.

yeah, half the people that ski park cant ski nething else and really arent that great skiers, i could get flamed for this but hey. Skiing trees and bumps and the occasional boring groomer and just getting some nice lines in realy help your skiing, actual skiing down a hill without worrying about rails, jumps, QP's etc. Coming from a racing backround me and my friends really like to ski the trees and little EC powder we get over skiing the park, we still love the park but bumps and trees win. Just my 2 cents

i wont say its not amazingly difficult to rip a nice line through bumps, cuz i cant do it, because i have never even looked at moguls as anything other than an obstacle to going fast.

my deal is that i fucked my knees up from being a shitty skater, so at this point i dont care to make that situation worse. plus i never skied moguls when i was younger, so I definitely didnt pick it up when i started skiing again a few years ago.

agreed with mrb, Moguls are where its at when its nice, There is nothing better in skiing than ripping bumps in the spring when its soft and you can go as fast as you want.!!!
