Does America owe Black Americans an apology?

slavery was messed up, but by now they need to get over it. Most black people I know are chill with it, and nigga also shouldn't be a big deal anymore.

Black people may talk racist or whatever, but white racism towards blacks has happened for over 300 years and has shown wayyyyy worse repercussions

dude people need to get over it already. yea it sucked and it shouldnt have happened, but it did and everyone has been trying to make it up to them ever since. and now a days its not like black people are the only ones discrimnated against. if they dont want to be here, then go back to africa, or haiti, or where ever you came from and stop bitching. my irish ansestors were discriminated against and i dont get extra money for college becuase of it.

here is a link to info about irish discrimination
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-Irish_racism

and for those who are too lazy to go to the site

Anti-Irish racism includes persecution, discrimination, hatred or fear of the Irish as an ethnic or national group, whether directed against Ireland in general or against Irish immigrants and their descendants in the diaspora particularly in the early days. It is traditionally rooted in the Irish and English relationship and their views of each other and is also evidenced in Irish immigration to other countries like the United States in the early days.

The term also applies to the religious persecution of Irish Roman Catholics.

19th century

Anti-Irish racism in Victorian Britain and 19th century United States included the stereotyping of the Irish as alcoholics,

and implications that they monopolized certain (usually low-paying) job

markets. Similar to other immigrant populations, they were sometimes

accused of cronyism, and subjected to misrepresentations of their religious and cultural beliefs. Catholics were particularly singled out, and indigenous folkloric and mythological beliefs and customs were ridiculed.[3] Nineteenth century Protestant American "Nativist" prejudice against Irish Catholics reached a peak in the mid-1850s with the Know Nothing Movement, which tried to oust Catholics from public office. Much of the opposition came from Irish Protestants, as in the 1831 riots in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.[4]

In rural areas in the 1830s riots broke out among rival labor teams

from different parts of Ireland, and between Irish and "native"

American work teams competing for construction jobs.[5]

It was common for Irish people to be discriminated against in social

situations, and intermarriage between Catholics and Protestants was

uncommon (and strongly discouraged by both ministers and priests). One

response to this prejudice was the creation of a parochial school

system, in addition to numerous colleges, that isolated about half the

Irish youth from the public schools.[citation needed]

After 1860 many Irish sang songs about signs reading "HELP WANTED - NO

IRISH NEED APPLY"; these signs came to be known as "NINA signs." (This

is sometimes written as "IRISH NEED NOT APPLY" and referred to as "INNA

signs"). These songs had a deep impact on the Irish sense of

discrimination.[6]

New York Times want ad 1854.[6]

The 1862 song, "No Irish Need Apply", was inspired by NINA signs in London. Later the song was adapted by Irish Americans to include their experiences as well. The issue of job discrimination against Irish immigrants to America

is a hotly debated issue among historians, with some insisting that the

"No Irish need apply" signs so familiar to the Irish in memory were

myths, and others arguing that not only did the signs exist, but that

the phrase was also seen in print ads and that the Irish continued to

be discriminated against in various professions into the 20th century.[6]

Whether or not the signs ever existed in large numbers, many New

Yorkers and other Americans harbored Nativist sentiment against the

Irish Catholic poor in the post-Civil war period. Irish Americans were

effectively barred from certain occupations. While the Irish dominated

such occupations as domestic service, building, and factory work, they

were not present in large numbers in the professions, finance, and

other "white collar" businesses. Irish people are stereotyped for

violence. Since many of the earliest late 19th century immigrant

population was Irish, they received the first attacks and

discrimination by Nativists and Protestants.

shut the hell up, that shit doesn't even compare to what happened to blacks, native americans, and most other non white cultures

I think the world should grow up and get over the fact that fucked up shit happened. We treat Germans normally now don't we? Even after all they did... Why should black people get any special treatment? That shit is done with now move on and stop bitching about shit that happened over 50 years ago

Thats a huge generalization, keep in mind it was not Germany, but quite specifically the Nazis that committed so many atrocities. Many of witch were toward Germanys own Jewish community.

Its quite literally the very least the American Government could do to apologize. It was not that long ago.

The complete absence of sensitivity and compassion in this thread is unbelievable. Several of you have alluded to "making it up to them for years", "get over it already", "it wasn't me", and similar sentiments.

You can't be serious.

How exactly have we been doing all of this "making it up"? Oh right...instead of torturing completely innocent men for happening to walk on the same side of the street as a white woman, we just call them niggers at the dinner table. The effects of slavery have been monumental and are still present; I wonder what our economy would be like today if slavery hadn't been an integral part of our nation's formative years. To even suggest that blacks are inherently lazy, materialistic, or misogynistic is just downright dumb and indicative of the same type of thinking that made enslaving blacks morally justifiable in the first place.

The rhetoric of "My ancestors were persecuted and yet they persevered and made it!" is not only stale, but completely irrelevant and incomparable both in nature and scope. Did I really see someone draw a comparison between the plight of the Irish immigrant and that of black slaves? Wow. I'm disgusted. I don't even have the clarity to formulate anythting approaching an intelligent, objective response. I'm just pissed

Keep the fucking apology. And while we're at it, stop doing the awkward "Hi black person, I'm totally not racist and I'm showing that right now by engaging in banal pleasantries with you at the grocery store." It's transparent and patronizing.

I'm glad to know The House wastes their time with irrelevant garbage like this instead of actually addressing real problems. An apology? Seriously, who the fuck cares about this apart from a handful on tiny special interest groups? It basically does nothing, nobody gives a shit about it, and nobody is going to notice. This your tax dollars at work.

i didnt want to get into this retarded thread and i didnt read any of the posts but you hit the nail on the head my friend.

WHO THE HELL CARES!

like you said, this is our tax dollars at work, deciding that we owe the blacks a formal apology, and people wonder why congresses rating is so low. here we are, in historic times, and all congress can do is sit around and come up with things like this? i cant believe the house actually decided to hear that.

wow....your callling HIM racist, i think you the one who is trying to rid african americans of this website....your the one who is ignorant and racist.

thankyou!

Btw, andy, go look into who proposed the bill...

let me give you a hint, pandering for votes......

white guy running in a predominantly Black district, could there be a coincidence?

yea but that includes people from the south as well right? and the south had the most casualties ANYWAY. ALSO, do you really think that the civil war was all about slavery? No, of course not... that was a side issue.

your a moron. obviously its an alias and more importantly its an alias because he thinks its funny to impersonate a black person. hes the racist. how am i trying to get rid of african americans

how dare you? dont even start that argumentwith me. i know how you rzacist people think, always discimating against african americans. you are a racist prick who hates african americans. they arent black by the way, they are african americans.

that post was either sarcastic. or sounded very sarcastic but wasnt meant to be. Dammit when will the NS sarcasm meter drop

fuck no man! most people in america have grandparents or a later generation come to america long after slavery was even over. we had nothin to do with it anymore!! !

no way, indians are so pathetic, they need to assimilate with our culture or shut up. They should have fought harder, we give them more than enough extra privliges.

fuck your wack ass, you jsut like fifty, snitchin n shit like dat, yous jus a snitch nigga tryn get me ban'n n shit.

Ok, so where to star...

I'm not even going to bother. You're just banned.

I think the site just became a much, much better place.

You're welcome. I also accept thanks via PM, or by contribution through the NS store. :)

Haha I've been watching too much of the Chappelle Show lately... Anyone see the episode when Blacks are offered reparation for slavery? ROFLMAO

And lets just say if an apology is due... It would be great if the president or speaker got up in front of the cameras for a formal and widely covered event and said "Sorry", then walked away...

Although the European settlers used African people for slavery it shouldn't be a grudge that most African Americans should hold against white people which I'm sure it isn't. The fact that the plantation owners raped a lot of the slaves however is wrong and completely destroys the proud heritage of an African family. You just have to face the fact that not all white people's ancestors were plantation owners and whatnot so if all of America were to apologize they would feel guilty of being part of a nation that exercised such an inhumane way of labor.

I do not think that the slavery in America was a good thing, by any means. That being said, I do not think that we owe Blacks (or any other group that was Enslaved) a formal appolgy. While minorities still may not be seen as equal by some people, i think that the majority of White Americans do see Blacks as equals. We have taken many, many steps to "appologize" to them already. The creation of BET, Black History Month, and the numerous "Black Only" scholarships that have been created are only a few examples of what we have done to "appologize". Problems that Blacks have today, cannot be blamed on whites. Sure, we did fuck up bad with the slavery in America, and yes, blacks have had a much harder past than we have (in generall), but there is nothing stoping anyone, of any race, from becoming successfull TODAY, except for ones own ignorance.

Also, to whoever said that Blacks choose to live a poor life involving crime in the ghettos, that is not true. While a high percentage of ghettos may be Blacks there are plenty of Whites living in them too. Many people who were raised in slums have broken out of that lifestyle and are now very successfull. Yes, maybe most people who have been raised in the slums do end up living that lifestyle later on in life, however i would guess that the reason that they return is not because they think that it is the best lifestyle, it is simply because that is the only way of living that they know.

Here we go again...

If you think blacks have access to the same opportunities as whites your'e just an idiot. What % of fortune 500 companies have black CEOs? According to your logic, the discrepancy exists because blacks just haven't "gone for it". BET? Really? BET exists because entrepreneurs saw an opportunity to appeal to a particular demographic that is culturally different from the majority that other networks target...not because white america decided to pander to blacks. MTV is a channel for 15 year old suburban white girls...they just don't call it SWGTV. Just shut up.

I can't help myself...

Black History Month? Black History Month exists because our text books, our sprawilingly epic heroic biopics, and essentially every other informative outlet minimizes the role that blacks have had in shaping this country while simultaneously photoshopping out the blemishes of our "founding fathers" and our heoroes. What's that? Ty Cobb stabbed somebody? Fuck it....he hit .400 for christ's sake.

Anyways, to make the argument that BET, BHM, and scholarships has somehow erased the ills of a few hundred years of slavery, is idiotic. I mean....have you watched BET?

ill admit it. im wrong. BET, BHM, and scholarships are all terrible examples. I did not think that trough at all. And your also right on the fortune 500 company thing. But, still I dont think that whites should be blamed for all of the problems of blacks.

I think black people owe us an apology. theyve leached so much money, and the civil war, bitch please, we died for them. and native americans? shit, we treat them better than we should, we conquered them, and then gave them land back? WTF?.

and im not just a big bad white person, im more of a minority than any black, asian or hispanic americans, and i dont get shit for it, im 3/4 basque, which youve probably never heard of. thats because theyres barely any of us. but yeah, on government shit for ethnicity i can put down other instead of white without just trying to fuck with the system.

seriously...

and you're definitely an extreme minority, but so what?! It's not like you're dealing with that on a daily basis... you get to wear that or not based on how it suits you (no pun intended) that's privilege yo, when it's the color of your skin, you have no choice.

since the beggining civilization? or wait maybe you're right, on the 7th day god divyed up the land.

And with this comment, all hope for a brighter future flickers out with a whimper.

Seriously, I don't even have the energy to stand in the path of such brazen ignorance.

I thought the chick comparing the struggles of irish immigrants to enslaved blacks was the most idiotic thing that could possibly be posted in this thread. She makes total sense in the wake of this.

Let me clarify. As a Basque, you rationalize that blacks are owed nothing because your "people" are even more minor a minority and you receive nothing? Funny...you look like a white kid to me. More importantly, you look like a white kid to police officers, prospective employers, and latently racist white women that you could potentially walk past late at night. Then there's the minor detail of your "people" not being shipped, enslaved, beaten, raped, marginalized, segregated, lynched, or denied voting rights over the course of a few hundred years. You are right about one thing, no one knows what a Basque is. So much so that it's impossible to persecute them. You sir, are a douche.
