Does America owe Black Americans an apology?

fuck no. slavery was around way before america was even discovered. blacks need to balls up and let it ago it happened over 200 years ago

lets not forget how many AMERICANS payed the ultimate price in the civil war.. someone correct me if im wrong, but i believe the number is around 630,000 people...

hell no. i'm pretty sure most black people are chill about it now anyways. besides the fact that slavery was invented by spanish people who liked to steal africans.

look around. america kisses black peopls asses. a black kid from my school finished 23rd in the class with a 3.48 gpa. The validictorian finished with a 4.8. THe black kid got in, the validictiorian did not. Blacks have more fucking rights than whites now. they don't deserve shit

we gave them the right to vote and to be american citizens, i thinks thats good enough for an apology. they need to get over it

If we're going in this direction, I believe we should. After all, most decent americans respected black people after the civil war, but unfortunately, they weren't completely equal until the mid- 70's. I think we should issue a formal apology, but, if we do, we should get Spain, England, Portugal, and France to issue apologies in combination with ours. Then apologize to africa itself for fucking it up so bad. I DO believe one is in order, though.

But not reparations. Cuz that's just retarded.

because i doubt anyone will click the link and read it :)

hmmm. i wonder if this has anything to do with stevie getting reelected?

WASHINGTON —

The House on Tuesday issued an unprecedented apology to black Americans

for the wrongs committed against them and their ancestors who suffered

under slavery and Jim Crow segregation laws.

"Today

represents a milestone in our nation's efforts to remedy the ills of

our past," said Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, D-Mich., chairwoman of

the Congressional Black Caucus.

The resolution, passed by voice vote, was the work of Tennessee Democrat

Steve Cohen, the only white lawmaker to represent a majority black

district. Cohen faces a formidable black challenger in a primary

face-off next week.

Congress has issued

apologies before — to Japanese-Americans for their internment during

World War II and to native Hawaiians for the overthrow of the Hawaiian

kingdom in 1893. In 2005, the Senate apologized for failing to pass anti-lynching laws.

Five states have issued apologies for slavery, but past proposals in Congress have stalled, partly over concerns that an apology would lead to demands for reparations — payment for damages.

The

Cohen resolution does not mention reparations. It does commit the House

to rectifying "the lingering consequences of the misdeeds committed

against African-Americans under slavery and Jim Crow."

It

says that Africans forced into slavery "were brutalized, humiliated,

dehumanized and subjected to the indignity of being stripped of their

names and heritage" and that black Americans today continue to suffer

from the consequences of slavery and Jim Crow laws that fostered

discrimination and segregation.

The House

"apologizes to African-Americans on behalf of the people of the United

States, for the wrongs committed against them and their ancestors who

suffered under slavery and Jim Crow."

"Slavery

and Jim Crow are stains upon what is the greatest nation on the face of

the earth," Cohen said. Part of forming a more perfect union, he said,

"is such a resolution as we have before us today where we face up to

our mistakes and apologize as anyone should apologize for things that

were done in the past that were wrong."

Cohen

became the first white to represent the 60 percent black district in

Memphis in more than three decades when he captured a 2006 primary

where a dozen black candidates split the vote. He has sought to reach

out to his black constituents, and early in his term showed interest in

joining the Congressional Black Caucus until learning that was against

caucus rules.

Another of his first acts as a

freshman congressman in early 2007 was to introduce the slavery apology

resolution. His office said that the House resolution was brought to

the floor only after learning that the Senate would be unable to join

in a joint resolution.

More than a dozen of the

42 Congressional Black Caucus members in the House were original

co-sponsors of the measure. The caucus has not endorsed either Cohen or

his chief rival, attorney Nikki Tinker, in the Memphis primary,

although Cohen is backed by several senior members, including Judiciary

Committee Chairman John Conyers, D-Mich., and Ways and Means Committee

Chairman Charles Rangel, D-N.Y. Tinker is the former campaign manager

of Harold Ford, Jr., who held Cohen's seat until he stepped down in an

unsuccessful run for the Senate in 2006.

i gotta agree with everybody that says fuck that. its over and done with, we apologize every single day and it ends up getting used as an excuse to take things to the next level. Like BET, you know people would shit their pants and have a seizure if we ever had White Entertainment television. the examples go on forever, i say fuck apologies. It's over with.

i have never done anything to support slavery neither have any of my ancestors. It was a bad thing that happened in the past that needs to be learned from not apologized for

hahaha, most television programs are "white entertainment." you aren't gonna catch a lot of black people watching seinfeld or frasier. haha wait a sec i don't think i know anyone who watches frasier.

so true and they have tons of african only scholarships and black clubs that only they can have but if they were to create a Caucasian scholarship or club it would be considered racist

word. and on both sides of my heritage there have been terrible atrocities, but I'm not looking for a fucking apology for it.

haha yeah dude truth be told. but like they aren't blatantly white entertainment. You know what i mean? IT's not like WE'RE WHITE, POWER TO US, THIS IS OUR NETWORK

no, fact is the majority of today's african american youth couldnt even comprehend what happened to their ancestors. To me its bullshit that people say that the white man could never understand what they've beeen through when any black person under the age 0f 40 probably has never been verbally abused by a white guy. black people also need to understand that just because a black guy is shot by a white guy it doesnt mean that it was rascism. thats just bullshit. And black people have black history month, why dont I have white history month?

im not saying that at all. what im saying is that whites cant get away with anything because almost anything can be seen as racist because of our shameful past

Our Apology was the wayne brady show. I think thats enough. we let them take up prime time tv with a show about black people stuff

yes.

i think african americans and natives deserve it
it doesnt help thema whole lot, but it doesnt cost us anything, so fuck it why not?

thank you. i love when kids who are like 20 are like fuck you dude you wouldn't understand what my people went through. and you fucking do?! fuck that. hell if i see a big black dude walking around i get scared as shit.

An apology will never change the years of slavery, racism and segregation in the US. I have to say its useless. The best way to apologies is to continue to treat all races as one, human. Maybe spend more money to programs that help the African American community overcome poverty and crime.

This is ridiculous. What are we supposed to do? "Hey, I know this is completely irrelevant to your life, but I'm sorry my nameless ancestors enslaved and abused your nameless ancestors". Like what the fuck?

You made this thread just for me didn't you...haha

I'm not gonna make a big huge argument like I have wayyyyy too many times in the past to restate everything I've said.

BUT yes, I think we owe Black America a huge apology. You drive to the hood and the shittiest neighborhoods in America, who do you see there? Well, mostly black people. Because we have been so racist and fucked up in the past and still today, black people have suffered in the predominantly white controlled country we live in. Every day black people suffer from racism and dumb shit like that.

haha seriously we stole their fucking land and they just get forgotten. well actually they get casino's and bullshit.

No, not at all. I think that Aferican Americans need to get over that. They have been milking it for way too long. They want us to feel sorry for them anytime something happens. get over it and move on. Its the Aferican Americans that are making it worse now by not letting it go and getting over it. what a stupid thread.

ya apologize to me :P You took all my land. I'm building a Casino on it and taking all your cash!

what was Affirmative action?

what was correcting our mistakes, and righting them?

what was 630,000 lives?

if we are going to get into the practice of apologizing for mistakes people made in the past, consider this my apology for WW2, consider this my apology for scalping white people, well i cant think of anything the swede blood in me did wrong:)

Didn't read the whole thread but this same debate is going on concerning Native Americans here in Canada.

Honestly, no one needs to apologize to anyone anymore. No one has done anything to anyone. I'm part Native American and I'm totally fine with whats up right now.

OK SO FOR ALL OF YOU WHO AARE ABOUT TO READ... I DO NOT SUPPORT SLAVERY

the civil war started because the south was having many of their rights revoked... the war started for the same reasons that the american revolution began, now i can assume how (most of nsers are unintelligent middle schoolers) you may not understand that, but they fought for freedom not for slavery and through the years this has been misinterpreted by many.

haha i didnt even notice that post.. oh and to the thread creator its African Americans, not black Americans

at this point, no. its happened so long ago, and i think you should focus on slavery today then slavery decades ago.

Affirmative action was dumb, reverse racism although it had a good intention. You can't call a mishap an apology.

630,000 lives is a shitload. Yes I agree that was a good thing.

All I'm saying is a verbal/written apology couldn't hurt so that we can start to move forward and get over this issue and move on instead of arguing whether black people deserve an apology or not. Instead of having black people against us, we should give them an apology so that we can start to work together.

just bad facts here.... slavery actually predates history from the egyptians, sumerians, persians

the word slave comes from the europeans who were enslaved by the vikings (Slavic - slave)

im mocking the thread in general by the ignorant posts.. but he could have just said blacks not black americans

Actually apologies are stupid and useless.

Useless because the victims of slavery are dead.

Stupid cause apologies made right now are made toward black americans. Actually, these people should bless slavery cause without slavery, they would live in africa, torn between starvatino, corruption, and constant war.

Fuck them, Blacks brought it upon themselves. First they enslaved their own(tribes), then the Arabs got them, then us. Why should we apologize when they started the whole thing in the first place?

So much ignorance in this thread. Do none of you realize the simple fact that terrible human rights violations upon entire cultures of people, such as slavery, have repercussions well down the line hundreds of years later. Regardless of weather or not slavery is still going on.

I cant believe you guys dont think racism still exists. Ignorance is bliss I guess.

I just dont think we need to apologize to people just cause there black. Most werent even alive during that time. There just riding it out to see what they can get. Oh, they had history class in 7th grade? Man, that all makes sense now. dang.

no, slavery happens all over the world. its still going on in some places. americans, who had gained enough knowledge to build ships, etc. went all the way to africa and i guess sorta conquered the africans? well not really conquered but they were obviously dominant enough to take a shit load of them back home.
