Do you need to add a 1 in front of a number?

Got a number and entered a 1 in front of the area code without a +. So the contact looked like 1 (xxx)xxx-xxxx. Sent an imessage from my phone to another iphone and it did say that the message was delivered. Just realized now that most of my contacts don't have a 1 in front of the area code, and if it does, it's a +1. Just wondering if the message never went through because of the 1 I added in front of the number.

1 is the country code for the US. It's 49 here in Germany for example. You don't need to put it in unless you are making an international call. AKA, if I call my US number with my German phone I need to put in the 1 first. In the US I don't dial the 1 and in Germany I don't dial the 49.

In canada (also 1 ) if we don't put the 1 when making a phone call to another part of the provence it sometimes wont connect because its long distance. Not totally sure with texting when/if you need it, but I have some numbers in my phone with the 1 and some without and it doesn't make a difference.

You know why it is 1 in the U.S??

Because we are #1

You have to put 1 before the number when you're calling from landlines but with cell phones you never have to. In America at least
