Do you actually need to bevel your edges?

Letting my friend ride my poachers this weekend but I’m skiing tomorrow and my backup pair is reckoner 112s. Should I bevel them or will I be fine without? I know they have durability issues, I’m not necessarily worried about catching edges cuz I’ve actually never detuned my skis ever but moreso worried that I might rip out an edge.

If you are referring to a park detune, yes it actually does help your edges last longer. I won't pretend to know the exact science behind it, but I do know it extends the time before you start getting edge cracks in my and others experience

How hard is it do? Do I need a grind thingy or can I just use a rusty piece of metal?

Buy a $12 file from home Depot and have at it. Don't just file straight at an angle ideally, try and take your time and make it nice. Make like a rounding motion with the file to give it some shape to it.

Also ski edges are hardened so it takes more time than you would think

I assume you mean detuning/rounding. You can also set a base bevel. It helps a lot. I have a 2 degree base bevel on my beaters and it helps with sliding a lot. It lifts the edge up away from the base so you slide on more plastic.

Yeah that’s what I’m looking for, Schoess kinda answered it though, mostly wanted to confirm it would be beneficial. I forgot to mention the reck 112s are brand new so

Dunno all of the nitty gritty (especially thermal and corrosive effects) but yeah rounding your edge helps remove the stress concentration at the sharp corner (basically think sharp angles = less material to handle the same amount of force). Adding a chamfer is arguable quicker and easier, but it still has corners rather than a nice radius.

Additionally, they're less likely to catch, thus lowering the max force they might experience from the side. Also, as said before, a base bevel can help reduce the chances of catching, especially if you want to keep a little bit sharper edge for better carving performance. For me, that's too much work. I just file a decent curve into the edge and call it good.

dull edge = lot of surface area touching rail at time = good and even distribution of heat = no edge crack

sharp edge = little small surface area touch rail mean lot of heat at one spot = one part of metal hotter than other = edge crack

Look up how laser tattoo removal works

Can I also do a base bevel with a file or is that a little more complicated. Any tutorials?

There are edge tools that you can set the angle of. They're not expensive but the file stones can be. I'd probably recommend against trying to set a bevel by hand but if it's a beater pair of skis, go for it

Yeah might need more research. Might actually be more worthwhile to buy and mount a second pair for rails and just round the edges I think. Surely someone’s selling some beat to shit ones for shit right?

It’s easy to do by hand with tools but yeah maybe don’t try it for the first time on some reck 112s you just got lol

and yeah Fb marketplace is full of cheap beaters

Ooh I meant there are hand held tools to use, but not to try to just use a file and eyeballs
