Do snowboarders look at skiers the way skateboarders look at rollerbladers?

Been pondering on this a little bit. I personally don’t mind fruit booters, but in general it seems that they are looked down on. How can skiing be perceived as so cool but roller blading as so lame? Is it just my point of view and because I love skiing I think it has a better stigma then roller blading? Is skiing not perceived as cool from the general public the same way roller blading is perceived as not cool?

Yeah, but just like fruit booting, if you’re actually sick at it no one will really hate. A lot of my friends snowboard but they still think it’s neat when I do something cool on skis. Kinda goes to show that shredding is kind of a universal concept.

I don’t think so. Skateboarding blew up way more / has more history than roller blading.

Skiing has been around way longer than snowboard and has a big following / tons of pros who absolutely huck their meat.

when you go to the skatepark it’s rare to see a rollerblader. When you’re on the mountain it’s expected to see a bunch of skiers

It honestly probably depends on the rwgion and even resort you're at. The last years my local hill has had a really large and solid crew of skiers and outnumbered snowboarders most of the time but other places snowboarding may very much dominate skiing numbers wise and lead to the kind of culture you described.

Snowboarder types who bag on skiers:

1. They snowboard once a year and do a falling leaf down the whole mountain. They bag on skiing to justify how shit they are.

2. Edgelords that are actually good at snowboarding. They have weird egos and consider themselves a “badass rebel”.

3. Snowboarders who don’t think skiing is stupid, but think the jokes that involve skiing are funny. Pretty cool people to ride / hang with.

Or act like traversing 100 yards is the end of the world

I know this is a joke but honestly, the only reason people bag on skiing is coming from insecurity somewhere in their life.

Snowboards are toys, skis are tools. Maybe if rollerblades predated skateboards by thousands of years they would get hated on less. I used to rollerblade but I just knew it was fucking awesome and got good enough to shut up wack ass skateboarders trying to stall on a curb so I didn’t give a fuck.

it’s crazy cuz progressing on blades takes infinitely more balls than progressing on a skateboard

I skate a lot and haven’t bladed, but I understand what you’re saying. Progression looks different across sports.

I feel like people forget that even though it takes more difficulty / time to learn tricks on a skateboard, you can still bail easily.

If you’re truly trying to push yourself on blades, I imagine it being so easy to eat shit / being very difficult to catch yourself while having wheels permanently on you.

I guarantee you’d be slamming concrete more often

4. Old dudes that are still bitter that a lot of ski resorts used to not allow snowboarding.

Imagine if the New Canadian Air Force never existed, and JLev never developed full length twin tip skis. If Tanner and Wallisch had nothing better than snowblades to ride in the golden era.

Then the answer would be yes.

But freeskiing fixed Jason's design and aligned with the skiing community. So it don't make a whole lot of difference how snowboarders look at us anyways.

The resort I work at has a ton of people that don't know much at all about skiing or the ski resort industry. They just assume from stereotypes that skiing is for old geezers / racers and snowboarding is cool and gnar. It wasn't until they actually got to see me / other skiers throw down they realized that skiing is equally as dope as snowboarding. I do both but prefer skiing because imo its more difficult, so I have more fun with the challenge. Also ski touring is way more practical than split boarding (Especially on traverses lol)

Also, blading is such a good off season sport for skiing. Works all the same muscle groups, similar muscle memory, and you can practice grinds, spins, and riding switch looking over both shoulders. Sure you get some comments at the skatepark but it takes a lot of courage to be different and not follow the norm.

what

it’s all toys bro

Which is why the only way to snowboard in the backcountry is to saw your snowboard in half and make two skis. Facepalm

Gotta cut the fruit boot terms out man. It’s pretty much an old term to call blading gay. There’s been such a history of homophobic terms thrown around with blading by skatepark culture that made it difficult for the sport to grow. Agree with your larger comment tho shredding is shredding.

I think the ability to go straight from the lift, ripping laps fast af top to bottom, through moguls, crud, groomers, ice, parks, jumps, side hits, etc is something you just can’t do as well on a snowboard.

But ripping proper pow on a snowboard feels so fucking good. It literally feels like surfing on air. And you just float so much better.

Also when skiers yard sale and all their gear explodes off their body, it looks cool as fuck.

I dunno one of my best friends snowboards and is one of the best boarders on the mountain. He does everything you mentioned, with a water bottle in his hand, and DOES NOT fall. I usually ski fast as hell and I can’t beat him to the bottom to save my life. And he’s spinning off side hits the whole way down. He makes that shit look so stylish and effortless. I see like 2 skiers, maybe, with that natural ease and flow to their riding but they aren’t as consistent as he is…

People who hate on anyone for doing a certain sport are naive and childish, I've been skiing with snowboards for over 20 years, the only ones who hate on skiers suck at snowboarding and aren't worth your time. I have found the same with skiers who hate on snowboarders.

Roller skating, which rollerblading evolved from has been around a lot longer than skateboarding. The first skateboards had metal roller skate wheels.

Confirmed we should cancel rollerblades period because roller”blade” is a war mongering term. Thank you for your cervix social justice warrior

Roller skating is not roller blading.

skating was inspired / came from surfing.

Doesn't mean skating is as old as surfing.

Yeah I’ve done both and I gotta say, I like skiing better in all areas besides pow. On a snowboard I think it looks way sicker / fees orgasmic.

Yeah blading came from ice hockey.....so skating and blading were made to surf/play hockey in the street.

The lack of rollerbladers has actually made them cool again honestly. It's a novelty when someone shows up to the park and is decent on them.

I hate skiing. Ive thrown away so much money at it. Wasted so much time sitting out in bad weather or in bad traffic. Years shaved off of my joints' life. Never skiing again smh ?
