Do people ski urban for the fun of it?

Does anyone here ski urban just to go out and get some? I feel like getting "the shot" is mandatory. It would be mind-blowing to go out on your cities pow day and see some local homie just getting his shred on. It has me wondering do people ski urban for the soul or do they just want to get the shot? discuss

This, tons of homies just go shred rail gardens all the time.

But, when it comes to a big trick or rail that's worthy enough for a shot, there's no reason to risk your well being to just go hit it for fun.

Think of it like powder/big mountain skiing. Tons of people shred pow and all mountain for fun, but you're not gonna go casually backflip a 50ft cliff and not film it, know what i'm saying?
 
I would ski urban for fun if I could. Sometimes I see cool features that I want to ski. I would do it for the soul and for the shot.
 
In my opinion it's fun to go out with some buddies find a rail or feature and use creativity to do something cool with it. It's usually a challenge but ends up being a good time and much more satisfying than a feature in the park. So I would say it's not all about getting the shot for me, more of a way to mix things up when park skiing gets stale.

A lot of the time it doesn't work out that way. I would much rather spend a day out in the streets somewhere with good friends around and a unique feature rather than in a busy park or standing lift lines regardless of "getting the shot". FREEskiing
 
when I used to live in Toronto I would go hit urban by myself all the time without a camera or anything. now that I think about it that wasn't too smart.
 
I haven't hit urban for any other reason than fun. It's not all like you see in lack of better. I'd argue that those guys are the only ones who feel that way about it. Anyone I've gone into the streets with have made it a blast whether we get a clip or not.
 
work in the street is part of the fun. the payoff is definitely greater when you have a shot to walk away with, but getting the shot should be fun too hopefully
 
There's a little rail that's set up right outside where I live and it's sometimes fun to just sesh that for a little bit.
 
Depends on who you are talking to, most people now a days go out to hit a huge urban spot to stack clips. But that's the fun part about it, going out with a fat crew all with the same mind set to step up the last trick. To some people going out on the streets on a snow day gets them just as stoked as someone else going out and getting the first tracks out on the slopes.

This! Also. I have definitely hit urban and not ever pulled out the camera. So yes.....some people do it.

Seriously?

People do super gnarly high consequence stuff all the time without cameras rolling, getting at it in skiing isnt all about getting the shot.

I've seen this on here before. I guess it depends on the person.

I've hit urban several times without even having a camera around.(pre cell phone era)

On the flip side if I was dropping off a 4 story building I'd probably want to have a camera around.

Idk, it's one of those things. Like a lot of people learned flips or different tricks for fun without a camera. Sometimes you just do stuff, not everything has to be documented. I'm not saying the camera needs to be shunned, but sometimes, who cares.

Some of the people putting out the epic urban edits aren't always doing it for the fun because it's high stress and they have to throw big shit and get the shot. That said the same could be said about park riders because of comps or filming, etc.

define "huck shit" or "super gnarly high consequence" because if someone is doing something that's worthy enough to be filmed (these days) someone at least is goproing that shit.

You guys are reading into it too much anyways, the point is that people do plenty of shit just for fun but the more "serious" skiers that want to do big shit and get shots, etc.

The op wasn't about "serious" skiers out to gts though. There is a huge contingent of people who are truly out out for the shred and don't give a fuck about filming. Skiing is fun - getting the shot is optional and often looked at as an inconvenience for a lot of people.
 
I hit urban to have fun and to get some nice pics. I think people always want to get a shot while they do urban because it looks rad. And you get likes from chicks.

I just like skiing everyday, and if I have the opportunity to walk out of dorm, walk three blocks to go hit some random little rail instead of driving an hour to an ice covered mtn, I am def doing that

i thought this when i first watched that doc, but i think they enjoy the process of getting the shot because of the satisfaction once they do. its way different than regular skiing or park.

Prior to cell phones, new edits every 10 seconds, and social media in general, my friends and I would spend hours building and hitting urban features for the challenge alone.
 
Obviously urban skiers do it for fun. but its kind of a bummer when you do a banger and nobody believes you did it because theres no footy.
 
I've done that before. We didn't go to any big rails or spots that we could get in deep shit for hitting. Just go to a park and build some stuff incorporating what is already built.

urban edits have a requirement now, you have to include at least one shot of someone getting pissed at a feature

but yeah, the stept guys never looked like they were having fun, like they'd just get pissed and then when they finally landed it they never even looked happy, just kinda relieved that they could go home
 
I ski urban almost exclusively for fun, but sometimes when I find some feature that I know will look really tight on film I usually can't resist trying to get a shotty or two.

But to me, urban can be fuckin lit no matter if you've got the red light on or not
 
id say urban is about 20-40% fun on average. Every time you are out in the streets the chances of your self getting wrecked are exponentially heightened from riding at the resort. I never felt that urban was worth doing strictly for the fun of it, if i want to have fun id rather go ski the hill, less effort, less worries.

If I go out to do urban it has to be a big enough feature that its worth filming or I dont feel its worth the risk. Of course a feature that is up to this par is almost always beyond the point of simply fun.
 
i have before too. I'm not from somewhere where you can shred urban at all pretty much so when i get the chance now I've walked around the city and hit a few rails for fun.

that being said if it was a really significant hit id probably go ahead and get the shot.

kinda depends on the person and place i guess

i do tons of comps and most are for fun. I do them with the goal to podium but its still tons of fun. Its basically just you and some homies throwing down for an hour and throwing some cool shit
