Do people need to know about freeskiing?

Thats the question, does anyone know the answer? If you say to someone that you ski, you don't want them to think you go out on occasional family trips for a weekend skiing getaway. You want them to know you freeski. But when you tell them that you twin tip or freeski, chances are that they will have no idea what your talking about. But this could be a good thing. But then again, with everyone knowing about it, pros get paid more, ski prices go down, more companies come out, it could be a change for the better. But who knows, lets hear it.

I'm just tired of telling people I ski and they look at me and make the gay little side to side skiing movement.................then I have to explain to them what freeskiing is!

word!

last time i told someone that im a "skier" he laughed and said skiing around a little hill shouldnt take over my winters, so i then had to explain to him that i was a big mt skier and what that was and he thought that there were only like a few people in the world who jump off cliffs so couldnt really believe me. wata douche, and yes its annoying

yea the world needs to know. but i also like doing a sport that not many people know about and when they learn about it they think its awesome and if everyone starts doing it that would ruin it.

but that doesn't happen, look at snowboarding, you have all those gapers who don't know anything, who love shaun white. But then you have the whole real scene lying underneath that is totally untouched, as a sport snowboarding rakes in a ton of cash because of shaun white basically, but we still have our roots and people don't even know about "real" snowboarding

my drum teacher always makes fun of me for skiing. he says that skiing is a waste of time. hes from Ghana though so he didn't know what snow was until he was 21

In my opinion, free skiing definitely needs more exposure. Every time I go out to the mountains I keep on seeing more and more people just using twin tips as they see as a fashion. Ski rental shops are stocking more twin tips as is what the consumer wants which is only pumping more and more money into sport. More money going into sport will result in growth which in turn will impact all areas from more companies, more teams, more sponsored riders which hopefully in turn will mean more of us get to ski to cheaper allowing us to ski more and progress sport.

Skiing is easier to get the hang of at the start just alot harder to progress wheras snowboarding is harder to start and easier to progress.

why do all of you think skiing needs more exposure this exposure that. you should know by now non skiers will never understand what goes on.....and you should just be fine with that not hope that they put big mountain comps on the xgames or some stupid shit like that. if you want skiing to get exposed maybe someday there will be bilboards up at your hill, maybe as a trade off for that walmart issues you coupons for 5 percent off at the bottom of your hill once a year.....

that would be awesome, i really hope skiing gets more exposed than billion dollar villages at the base and adds on every work bench. there is really alot more room for improvement there. more people in skiing will only make it cost more. its like gasoline everyone wants it, so it costs a ton of cash.

skiing is a sport that is just there. there is a ton of things you can do to make skiing cheap. frankly my hill was pretty much maximum capacity every day.....i dont want anymore people around.

it sounded like you just wanted more gapers at where you ski.

then i kept reading.

and i agree, id rather have just the same amount of people at my hill. no more.

if 'good' exposure happens, then areas will crowd. the only thing i would want is for people to know what the hell freeskiing is. not want to go out and do it.

possible? yes.

likely to happen? no.

haha i kno. try explaining to people in cinci. i told my manager i need the 24th off for a rail jam and hes like "wtf is that?"

Skiing is a winter activity, I dont want it to ever blow up like skateboarding, snowboarding, or surfing. Do you know the conflict between those kids within those sports is huge. Look at surfing and people fighting over waves or all the fags that just wear burton because its the cool winter jacket. I feel anytime you see a freeskier you know their struggle and its a friendly meeting.

Skiing should be more like rock climbing or kayaking, if you think its fun go out and do it. Dont do it because you may win a contest, or get sponsered by your movie segment. people dont CLIMB mountians to make money and progress their sport, we are just going down the mountain because the ride is better and better each time.

I know thats kinda two seperate thoughts but im pretty high and just ranting...dont ski for more money

I see your point, but sports like the one you mentioned can be cool and fun. Snowboarding can totally be done for the same thing as skiing; the descent. Just for the fun of it, the only problem with snowboarding, skateboarding and surfing it's the way it's in the market. Way too much about how "cool" it is.

i like having my own niche. ya it would be nice for a lil more publicity, but if it goes mainstream, there will be alot morewannabes, kinda how snowbaording went( no disrespect, some of the guys rip) you have kids who 50 50 grind and 360 and claim the shit outta, i dont want skiing to be like that, i want it to stay more low key and underground what have you.

when i hafta explain to a girl what kind of skiing her boyfriend ,that she has had for like 6 months, it makes me pretty mad

mor publicity means more gappers tho so its kinda hard to choose cuz i like doing something not many other ppl do

did you see the Rush show a couple of weeks ago in Reno Im guessing thats where you live im from gardnerville

my girlfriend knew what ns was before I met her! :o How could I resist that?

but yeaah, I agree it's a pain in the ass to always be explaining what I do to everyone.

That is the exact reason why i love skiing There is no pressure to do any thing that you don't want to and you can progress at your own pace and in what ever way you want to.

word, agreed completely. the only thing is when you say, "hey I'm a kayaker or a rock climber!" people are like, shit that is pretty cool. when I say I'm a skier people think mad lame gaper skiing. not that I want to be looking all cool and shit, but you get what I mean.

Rush played in Reno!!!!!...too bad, im the east coast rep, i live near toronto, they will come back soon enough

i remember being at smuggs, VT like 6 years ago and there were times that the lift lines were over ONE HOUR! the lifts were all old doubles.... I ski alta now and there were days that i would see more people in line....but because of the high speed quads you might wait 20 minutes....i heard of 30 minute wait a few times on supreme this year. then on collins side of alta there is pretty much one groomer out and its groomed every day, and every day giant moguls have formed on it by the afternoon. thats when there is too many people at a mountain.

and who cares if you tell a stranger that you ski and they might think that you dont do 360s???? who cares if the pros dont make enough.....which i completely disagree with because doesnt jon olsen have a lamborghini that he drives to a ski hill.....isnt dumont sponsored by super target......doesnt tanner do whatever the hell he wants.....

real skiings about getting a cool job in a ski town with not many women around and not too much cash until you are sick of it. if you have the right job you ski every day and build your bank account at the same time. and the riches that the mountain can provide you are worth more than money than fame and exposure , that it seems a few of you are in it for.

and you people still are thinking more people is cheaper skiing...skiing will never get cheaper. thats how money works. it always costs more for the same thing. every year. remember when 2 liters of coke was 79 cents..... and that was before everyone knew how bad it was for you. now its 1.59 and people know how bad it is and still pay it.

altas lift ticket was over 50 dollars for the first time ever. is it worth it....yes fuck yea you can take 30 lift rides a day and its like 2 dollars a

ride. i eat 2 dollars in granola to hike a mountain and take one run out of bounds.

vail pushing 90 for a day right?

ski areas know for the most part , people buying lift tickets are people with a bunch of cash.....

i was at a construction site the other day picking up wood for my drop in, and the guy asked what it was for, and i was trying to explain it was for skiing, i had to tell him we were building a skateboard ramp. he didnt know what the hell i was talking about
