What are you using?

I'm going to try my hand in the mixing side of things, so I'm probably leaning towards just sucking it up and dropping $500 for the Traktor Kontrol S2.

honestly, I'm in a position where all i have to do is make a phone call and i could open any dubstep show in RVA, and we have a couple a month with the biggest artists in the game headlining. my boss called yesterday asking if i knew how to mix and if I wanted to open for flux, which was just the breaking point for me to finally say fuck it and go for getting into mixing.

it basically would be a waste for me to not at least TRY to get into it.

p.s. I just read that and I came off like a douchebag, don't judge me lol.

Do it man, music is fun.

Starting out with a controller and tractor is the way to go, then you can move up to CDJs or something once your DJing starts really paying off and you get more experienced. You can get controllers for significantly cheaper than the Traktor Kontrol series though, and they will be just as good. You will also need some good headphones, and shitloads of practise before you're opening for people though lolol.

I've seen plenty of people DJ with just a mouse and keyboard, you don't even really need a controller. The more limitations you put on your music the better you will be (but there are many people who will tell you that I am an idiot and that you need lots of expensive gear). The controller will definitely make it easier though.

at first I was looking at the Numark mixtrack pro, but after asking around the handful of DJ's I know, they all told me that its really worth it to just save up for the kontrol s2.

and I know the main venue I work at strongly prefers you use their CDJ, but the other ones I occasionally work really don't care what the fuck you use. I had a buddy who had only been mixing for 6 months open for zeds dead, and learned how to use the CDJ literally 45 minutes before the show haha. I was sitting there watching in like awe. they let me fuck around a little bit and I was just staring like "uhh, wut." and did a few beatrolls mid song and thought I was the shit hahaha

Major advantage of paying for the slightly overpriced S2: you don't have to do any midi programming, you just plug it in and go. The Numark would be just as good honestly, its just that you'll have to go through and set up each button and knob on it individually which sucks.

DJing is actually a lot more complicated than that. Unless you're referring to like the DJ that comes to your schools homecoming dance and throws glowsticks out to the kids and just plays top 20's.

this thread reeks of over the top claims, arrogance and bullshit. just ask your question about DJ equipment, and leave it at that dude. claiming you can make a simple phone call and open for any show in your area and claiming that your boss asked you to open for fuckin flux pavillion is the most absurd and arrogant shit i've read all week.

i don't give a fuck who i offend in this thread, this thread is ridiculous. ask for equipment advice, stop with the ridiculous excess.
