DIY Car Rack

Has anybody ever tried making a DIY Car Rack? I have a ski rack from my old subaru. But now I have a '97 Honda Civic and a naked roof. I've looked on craiglist and haven't found anything cheap enough to make it worth buying.

Any ideas NS? The biggest problem is making a mount to fit on the top of my car.
 
seems like a pretty bad idea. Keep in mind the roof rack is under a huge amount of wind resistance when at highway speed. If its not properly mounted it will sure as fuck fly right the fuck off your roof.

Just man up and pay the money to protect yourself and the people behind you on the highway.
 
Find any Thule rack with about a 52" bar or so (maybe 48?) and buy the feet that match your car. Should do the trick.

Same goes for Yakima, only it's called a Qclip
 
Carpet on roof, soft side down

Skis on top

Ratchet strap, put the rope through water noodles which sit on top of skis, rap strap around roof through the doorways, tighten
