anyone have any experience making an anchor for a canoe? I've google'd it and most people recommend using a coffee can filled with concrete with an eye bolt. does anyone have any personal experience or suggestions?

was out on a lake the other day and the wind just rocked us. lookin for something cheap, but effective. thanks guys

You could also just use a hollow core cinder block with a chain looped through.

It's tricky to do because of pulling it up (especially if it gets stuck in the muck and you gotta yank it free) can easily throw you off balance, especially if you're without another person to counter balance.

Just steal something like this

That's what my family has always done. It works really well too.

my family has used/made a number of anchors throughout the years. you can either go to a boat store and get one of the cheap 10 lb ones, or just fill a small bucket with concrete and use u bolt, which works perfectly fine (we do this for a rowboat and it only moves when it gets really stormy and the tide is coming in.

we normally leave our motor boat attached to a buoy for weeks on end, and that is just held down by 2 10 gallon buckets with a chain going to the buoy, and it works fine

We used to melt down lead into a coffee can and then put an eye bolt in before it cooled.

Don't make it too big, only a few pounds, because it can be a bitch getting it off the bottom.

always used a milk jug (gallon) filled with concrete. anything sizable filled with heavy stuff will do.

if its just so you dont drift when daydrinking or fishing or something, you can even use a gallon jug filled with sand or small rocks with a rope tied around the handle. i wouldnt recommend it for leaving something in the water unattended, but if its so you dont drift while in it, it will be fine

Pretty much this except filled with sand and water. I would also try those massive gatorade bottles too. Usually 1/3 rocks, 2/3 sand and enough water to saturate the sand. Link rope through 1-3 of those suckers and you should be fine.
