Disturbing Photos

I could see it either way. Encourage your kid too much and he'll get jaded on success. Belittle little Billy and you could encourage him to work harder.

And every parental generation is somewhat unhappy with their children. We remember our childhood differently that we actually experienced twenty years after it happened. Hard to say about much of any of this however, since its all deep and involved psychology.

All I know is, I'm not letting my kid grow up via television.

There is nothing wrong with television if it is selective and not in excess. I would allow my children to watch TV...but they will also be doing sports and other activities.

Now I'm not a parent or psychologist, but common sense suggests you need balance. Totally depriving a child of something as common as television will only make them crave it and obsess over it. The best way to restrict kids is to make them feel like they're not being restricted at all.

I don't trust that magazine. many of the pictures are majourly photoshopped. Sometimes the controversial part of a pic is the edited part.

Thats the issue I was getting at.

And I agree that certain aspects of tv are detrimental to childern just like they are detrimental to society as a whole. Any medium when abused is bad for the audience.

After reading this I thought about what my current facial expression is now on ns..... its a pretty blank stare... same deal... and I don't believe I'm out of reality or whatever... dumb "experiment"

thats just sad. parents need to get off their asses and throw their sons a freaking baseball once in awhile, or better yet, take them to a ski resort instead of just letting them waste away in front of a tv

i think (or hope rather) that there is a huge cultural backlash because the gerneration below most of us is fucked up

k i think this is fucking retarded. like sure they are watchin the tv really hard. but tons of ppl do that. and the photographer took the picture probily when they kids have a stright face. but i can say tv is getting to much for some kids. i just think these pictures are not enough to state what your trying to say

This is prolly what all of our faces look like when we're on NS in front of our computers. I dont really see anything weird by this.

Also, the thing about attention spans... Kids nowadays can absorb more information faster than any other generation in history. Our short attention spans compared to before the computer era is largely due to the fact that we are used to being bombarded with information at such a pace that if we do not have enough to cover our interests we will jump on to the next thing that will entice our active centers.

Sports today are much more intense than they were, courses more demanding (in terms of size of content), games more involved, toys more realistic, because there is so much more needed to keep someone attentive, because of how fast we can process information.

All the long posts here amuse me... the kids were obviously all dragged in for some test they didn't want to do in some shitty room watching TV they don't care about. Just the fact that they had to take a break from watching cartoons from the comfort of their homes is enough to make them all look sad. This doesn't prove anything. TV in moderation is fine, just don't be an idiot about it.

I don't understand what the fuck is all your guys' problems. In the innital post i said that the photos were disturbing, and that i was afraid of the effects of a mass media society was going to have on thees kids. I said the look on the three year olds face is beyond creepy and that i urged people to make sure they took some time to remeber their childhood, go out and play and not be suckling the boob tube all day.

i never drew any scientific fact from the photos, all that was noted is how unnatural the kids look.

but you wanted to get scientific, you wanted to tell me that NO, TV IS GOOD FOR YOU!!!!!.

the only good i saw looking these things up was if you watch TV that is intended for your age, and promotes reading/social interaction Ie. sesimamee street for preschoolers, that it encouraged them to go read, and helped them on pre-reading skills tests...

saturday morning cartoons actually made the perform worse on pre-reading skills tests.

now the facts are the average kid watches four hours of tv a day

for every hour a child is in school they will watch 1 2/3 hrs of TV

Child obesity is increasing, any guess why?

A study of 3 and 4 1/2 year olds showed that at 3 years old, children were three times more likely to be overweight if they were exposed to two or more hours of TV a day, and 25 percent watched more than five hours of TV daily. By age 4 ½, children with excessive exposure to TV were nearly three times more likely to be overweight than those with less TV exposure. While programming – whether it was an educational show or not – did not impact a child’s overweight risk, Lumeng says excessive exposure to advertising on TV for unhealthy foods and the likelihood that a child may snack while watching TV may be contributing factors to weight gain.

research has shown that watching tv between the ages of 1-3 does have an impact on attention, good job there, except i think you forgot to mention that along with all the extra absorbtion abilities that TV watching causes kids to develop ADHD. Each hour watched by 1-3 year olds increases the childrens risk of developing ADHD at age 7 by 10%. (http://www.neuropsychiatryreviews.com/may04/npr_may04_excessiveTV.html)

children will see 10,000 minutes of advertising each year (people age 65 will see 2 million commercials each year) -- you figure out the implecations of exposing kids to corporate brands from the moment they put the diaper on (dependancy?)

Yes moderation is better than tv in excess, but how many of you watch more than an hour of TV a day?

Prove to me why TV is so great, prove to me that TV isn't harmful to young children, prove to me that the majority of the kids actually do watch TV in moderation, and that they spend heeps of time with their parents, friends, playing in the real world.

I think your missing the point, its not an article, atleast that we can read. It was a series of photographs that illustrated the dangerous effects that tv can have on children. They sit there, and zone out, and its not unrealistic, most people dont laugh at all when they watch TV, they just sit there, and watch. If something is said, they might appreciate it and smile on the inside, but continue watching. this is what ive observed from watching kids all my life.
