Dislocated shoulder, your experiences with em.

Well i managed to dislocate my shoulder after trying a switchup on a box and wiping out. It popped out then popped back in while i was getting back up...long story short i went to the hospital two days later and based on the description the doctor told me i had probably partially dislocated my shoulder rather then fully dislocate it. Im in a sling for 3 weeks total, and then he said its up to me if i want to ski.

Two weeks afterwards (today) it feels great, still sore in some movements if i move it too high. Other than that, its relatively pain free. Im a very strong guy (5 year bodybuilding amateur competitor, although ive quit that) and have faster then normal recovery rates for all my previous injuries.

My question for you guys, is those who have had a dislocated shoulder or maybe similar injuries, or know of friends that have - how long before they were skiing again, and did they face any troubles, or have a reoccuring injury?

Cheers

Ive heard that redislocating your shoulder again is a very reacurring injury. A few of my friends have dislocated theirs, and they have said their shoulder dislocates easier now, and one of my friends has gotten to the point where he can just tug it out and pop it back in.

It starts with one time, then pops out a little easier the next, then it's sloppy and your screwed and need surgery. 8 total full dislocations in 2 years, 3 of which required ER trips.

my brother was skiing two day later in a sling. But then he dislocated the other one doing urban so i dont know if thats a good idea. Dislocated shoulders are hard because you can ski on them but if you fall on it ur gonna mess it up again. My brother now has all kinds of shoulder problems cuz he never lets them heal.

sup man, I had a similiar injury last february, torn A-C (acromioclavicular) joint in my shoulder. I could barely sleep for about two weeks. this is alot worse then your thing but i'm also into gym and bodybuilding and I do beleive it helped alot with my recovery.

I agree with what others said there is a greater chance it will " pop out " again in the future. just take it easy for a week or two and see how you feel, I was back out there in about two months. but my injury was worse then yours.

Work on your range of motion as the pain goes away, good luck to you.

in the last yearI have dislocated my rigth shoudler once and subluxated(dislocation that pops back in by itself) my left one 3 times and I just tore my right rotator cuff. Disloacation suck they just keep happening. But I only missed 2 days of skiing and wore a sling and skied the rest of the time. You can also get braces whohc are supposed to be very helpfull. I just bought a 300 brace for both shoudlers and i am hopeing that that will work. Skiing with a sling isnt that bad just be carefull because then your other shoulder is at risk cause you only have one arm to catch you.

i dislocated my hip, my doctor says i cant put weight on it for 6 weeks, no pulling it up to my stomach/sudden movements and i cant ski for a year, but i think a hips a little more serious than a shoulder.. if i were you i'd just go ski whenever it feels good. I have heard of it coming out easier again once you've done it though..

Thanks for the input guys, i've had a friend dislocate her shoulder and it was reoccuring but that was with hockey, a wee bit different then skiing.

Doctor also mentioned that it could pop out easiar the next time as well which is something im not looking forward to at all. Im thinking that once i take off this sling (3 weeks in total) i will hit the hill and stick to a bit easiar runs and just stay out of the rail park altogethor (riding RCR) for another 2-3 weeks. Guess ill be practicing riding switch and riding powder a bit more.

yea good luck with that shit. i dislocated mine last spring and now it pops out soo easy it shitty. over the summer it would pop out swimming and shit and now sometimes if i land the wrong way like too hard even if i stomp the trick it will pop out. and of course when i eat shit it is fucked. i have been avoiding seeing the doctor so we'll see how my shoulder turns out in a year or two probably really diggin myself a holeb

just wear a sling and you shoudl be able to ski park. the only things a have problems with are blindsides spins of rails they are just kinda hard with only on arm but everything else isnt to hard.

well. im a whitewater kayaker and there is this thing called a sublux. its where somehow if you do a roll wrong or something like that the shoulder slips out then back in quickly. this happened to me twice, both in rapids, it sucks like crazy but you can fight through it. all i did was go home after boating and ice it and not boat/use it too much for like a week then it was good, so since urs is worse i say ice it, smoke alot, and take it easy.

good luck man.

Heya-

my shoulders dislocate pretty easy now cause i kayak a decent amount but i've only had a sling once...i was skiing the next day in a couple cases.

It pretty much just your pain tolerance and how willing you are to screw yourself up again.

Have fun

did mine. you should be fine. body builder, partial dislocation... yeah man don't sweat over it. your arm will be most unstable in the upright position though.

anterior dislocation last fall from college rugby. ER set it back in. Id recommend some basic weight lifting and PT to make sure it wont come back out easily and get all those muscles that are were holding the ball in the socket back to full strength and motion. I only had the sling for 4 days but I had enough painkillers for a week of fun and no memory of class. It will be easier to do again and repeated dislocations (even two) can lead to surgery. In my opinion, do some PT- find something online even- then go back as quickly as comfortable but keep in mind the consequences of another dislocation, and learn how to pop it back in should you need to and there isn't a hospital/professional help around.

its been said, but dislocating ur shoulder will happen over, and over agian.

I strongly suggest physical therapy. It isn't bad and it will pay off in the long run.

in the mean time, still ski, but just be very careful

dude i feel you, i actually just got home from the hospital. i tore my rotater cuff about 6 years ago and it never fully healed but no injuries either through many ski and kayak seasons. today i threw my arm out of the socket playing fucking squash. my biggest advice is see a physio and follow their advice religously. i was hardcore about my physio for a long time but kinda quit it for awhile and my shoulder probably weakened up resulting in this shit

Same with my friend Dave. He's has numerous surgeries, but there's really no fix (I assume). He's a snowboarder, and has taught himself how to roll out of his falls so that he doesn't pop it out. But little things do it too, one day he was just putting on his jacket...then he gets that look on his face and you just cringe because it looks so painful.

I would baby that shoulder.

umm... first off they blow i hated it when i dislocated mine, then i skied with a sling the next weekend and messed it up again, which my doc said if i didn't end my season there, i would probably screw it up enough to need surgery, so i missed the season form mid march on, trust me just wait a few weeks, and you'll appreciate not losing the season, aswell as permanantley messin up your arm

Quick update:

I spent 3 weeks in the sling and finally took it off. It was almost 100% pain free since, only small jerky movements in the wrong direction create a bit of pain. I have not gone to physio therapy as i cannot afford it, however i am taking the instructions of the doctor seriously. I have done research on the injury and the proper exercises to correct the problem and have been doing them religiously. I have been skiing 3 times and it has not bothered me, however i've stayed out of the rail park and just to the other features of the bowls.

Cheers and thanks for your input.

I dislocated my shoulder on a sunday, popped if back in as i skied to the bottom of the park, i went skiing the wednesday after and was doing the shit i always do, it depends on the person

My friend dislocated his sholder playing football and was out for 2 seasons afterwards because it kept coming back out and he had to have surgery to make it get better. i dunno if its just because he's a freak but it would pop out almost every day...

and on a slightly but not entirly related topic my grandma is presently having problems with a dislocated hip that continues to pop out....

from my experience i would wait a couple of weeks, not all season, just to make sure it dosent pop out, i doubt it will be as bad as my buddies beacuse it wasent fully dislocated but i'd take it easy anyway.

My dad has dislocated both shoulders, and I don't want to freak you out but he's had problems for the rest of his life, he's had surgery twice, and both were several years after the actual injuries.
