Dislocated shoulder, how long till I can ski?

So end of December I popped my shoulder out in a nasty fall. I got an anterior dislocation. I've heard very conflicting things from the two orthopedic doctors I've seen. One said It'd be safe to ski by mid February, the other told me my season is basically over.

Anyone here have experience with shoulder dislocations and recovery times? Is a brace an option?

You dont need your shoulder to ski. Just dont fall.

Did either doctor tell you if you tore anything or how bad it was? If you didnt tear anything and you didnt screw up the socket cup part of your shoulder, then you should be fine in a couple weeks.

I did this and tore nearly everything in my shoulder (ligaments and rotator cuff) and I was supposed to be done for a long time. I skipped the surgery and continued to play lax through the pain. I regret it now because I have limited motion and a lot of pain.

Listen to your doctor, but have them explain why. If they cant, they are pulling a number out of their ass. If they give you reasons (tears or swelling etc.) then listen to them. That why you are paying them.

Haven't gotten an mri but from initial assessments they said I didn't tear anything. Sockets not messed up either but they did say I dinged my humerus. The first doctor said no need for surgery unless it happens again the second was really pushing me towards it. I'm just going the pt route and seeing how I feel.

Its a month or two to heal. If you don't fall on it your fine, but like your doc said... If you do have a really nasty fall you might need surgery

Yeah really hit on the PT too. It's crazy how quick that helps strengthen it back to normal versus just resting

Dislocations are nasty fuckers and some of them never heal properly. See these posts all the time, and I always think the same thing... don't risk it man. Stay off the slopes until it's near enough 100% up to strength.

Let it heal properly, you got to live with that shoulder for the rest of your life so don't go fucking it up.

Some of my friends weren't too careful after dislocating their shoulders and it turned into repeated dislocations even from silly, small movements instead of crashes. That route always leads to surgery. Take care of yourself and if you feel like you need to ski, you'd probably be fine taking it really easily. Doing PT would be the smartest route, just really try to avoid doing it again.

I dislocated my shoulder three years ago and haven't done it since, but it still feels a little off or unstable at some angles and with some movements (but I didn't do PT). I was, however, skiing a month later and trying new tricks about two months afterwords.

You'll just have to understand that your shoulder will probably not ever be as strong as it used to be, which might limit your skiing.

starting pt wednesday hoping to be back on the slopes by the end of February. Thanks for your insight guys.

Dislocated my shoulder skiing with my coach in Aus, caught up with his instructor friend who's a physio in the food court, popped it back in, and after a few panadol was back out in about 15 minutes.

So basically as soon as you want, bearing in mind that two weeks later i dislocated it again significantly worse and had to get an op, so up to you...

how can u afford this shit. r u some rich type of fruit?

I'd imagine this dude just isn't some poor, worthless degenerate like you. Going to the doctor isn't abnormal. It's probably akin to going to the gas station for smokes for people like you and your dad.

im just sayin health care is expensive and i dunno how ppl can afford to see a surgeon. i broke my shoulder in 2013 i went to bed and drank it off

since when do you need a shoulder to ski? i've seen people without fucking legs ski better than you.
