ok so I first dislocated it last august, when i fell skating. yesterday i ate it longboarding and it popped out again, but i was able to put it back in myself. ive got a couple questions for those of you who have done this before and done it multiple times

does the recovery time change after youve done it before? will i still have to wait a month to do anything, because thats what the doctor told me last year

what are all your expirences with getting the surgery. im sort of looking into it, but am really reluctant because i hate surgery.

if i dont get the surgery, will it still hurt as much every time i do it?

Sorry if this isn't much help, but every time you dislocate your shoulder it gets that much easier to pop out again. I think the surgery should help fix the repeated dislocation problem.

Welcome to the club! This will probably be an issue for the rest of your life...
I've had about 20 dislocations, and I popped them all in myself. I usually try to wait a week to go do anything extreme, but make sure you ice it 3-4 times a day for the first 3 or so days after. I I have stretches/exercises I got in PT to speed up the time it takes to feel normal. I was considering surgery, but I was told in my specific case that I'll have a 90% chance of it coming out again so I decided against spending all that money on a surgery and went to PT 3 times week for 3ish months until I could work on my shoulder strength on my own. I should ski with a brace, but I'm an idiot. the brace helps alot so I'm told... but it limits mobility, so I'm not all for it.

I would recommend getting a surgery consultation because it could help you since every injury is a little different. If I had gone in earlier surgery would have worked for me, but I waited until the 5th or 6th time it came out. And definitely go to PT for a while it did wonders for me.

im about 7-8 weeks post-op on my left shoulder, dislocated it skiing my first time and have done so about 30 times after that. sometimes it would dislocate when i would be sleeping with my arms out like a butterlfy. i decided it was time to get surgery becuase honestly i could not do anything i used to. basketball, cliffjumping, soccer, and of course skiing were all gone excpet for skiing which i took very easy. after surgery the doc said that my shoulder was pretty bad and that i even had some bone loss which he said "means it has a more likely chance to dislocate again." i was so worried because this injury was the worst thing that has ever happened to me.

i have been in physical therapy for about 4 weeks now and it is going GREAT!! i am still having some limited movement with it but every stretch i do it is feeling better and better. my therapist is the coolest dude ever and is fully commited into helping me get back to the things i love to do. the stretching and stregthening are pretty extensive but if you follow them and do them everyday you will see results when you wake up in the morning.

ive noticed that lots of people are having problems with shoulders like brett farve and creighton, its the worst thing ever but having surgery was the best thing ive ever done because it feels so much more stable.

im just extremely happy with the way things are going now because i can get back to the way things used to be in a couple months

i got surgery 3.5 months ago my shoulder is still not even close to good yet i might have a frozen shoulder im just starting to work on strengthening. Make sure you do your PT. Im also stuck in a wheelchair because I had ankle surgery and my shoulder wasnt strong enough for crutches

my friend had the same problem and hes actually getting the shoulder surgery tomorrow. i know he has been putting it off for awhile and was just coping with it popping out pretty much every time he went snowboarding. because it has dislocated so many times, bone has been worn down gradually. so tomorrow, his surgery will not only deal with the ligaments but a bone marrow transplant. the word transplant never sounds good so if you encounter the same sort of problem, i wouldn't put it off.

i actually fell on my shoulder over a week ago at coc and we thought i had dislocated it. looking at what several of my friends are going through with dislocated shoulders i was not too happy. luckily, or not so luckily, i only fractured scapula (shoulder blade).

dislocated mine in april playing tennis, did PT for 4 weeks and it felt pretty good. It hurt like hell the first time.

then i did it again throwing a football way to hard a few weeks ago. It didn' hurt that bad, and putting it back in was easy and almost painless.

i didnt do any PT after the 2nd one, but i did get a job which involved alot of heavy lifting. i did that for 5 days, and now i can't feel any pain at all in my shoulder. i guess streching and strenghtening work wonders.

ive dislocated my shoulders many times, first time i was in a sling for a week then i was fine, now i just pop them back in my self and ice it evey night for a few days but i still do what ever i do.

i just had surgery to repair a torn labrum and some torn muscle, as a result of many dislocations...the surgery isnt bad at all; better than having wisdom teeth removed IMO but the downside is wearing a big, uncomfortable immobilizer sling for 4-6 weeks and no physical activity besides therapy for 4 months. the more you dislocate your shoulder, the more often it's going to happen because you are stretching cartilage and it never tighten back up. basically, dont get the surgery until your dislocations start affecting your lifestyle. (i would dislocate my shoulder just by taking a shower or getting dressed) if you cant have any fun without dislocating your shoulder, or it starts happening super often, then get the surgery...i recommend considering it and trying to decide what time of year you could sit around doing nothing for 4 months. its better to get surgery before your shoulder is irreparable.
