Discussion: Back Country

Not talking shit on any movies, ski areas, or anything I'm just bored at work haha. But on to the discussion. So I have been freeskiing probably for a good 4 season's now. My first movies that got me into the whole scene were ready fire aim, 1242, focused, and so on. But ever scince then I just can't get down with the BC. A full video part of backcountry booters with slow threes and sloppy right side tricks into powder with an occasional straight slide on a hand rail just doesn't do it for me. And if it is a full part of just back country lines and cliffs, guaranteed it's getting fast forwarded through. I'm from a small hill 40 minutes from the city of pittsburgh, where I reside. I grew up on sketchilly set up rails, tables never bigger than 50 feet, and maybe 1 or 2 days a year i get to ski a nice layer of powder. Hell, up untill about last season EVERYTHING we had was shitty, though now 7 Springs is spending mad loot to compete with places like big boulder and ski roundtop (Other pennsylvania ski resorts), so these past two seasons have been rediculous. But in terms of BC, i just can't relate, atall. I am never going to be hitting backountry hits bigger than 60 feet unless I get sponsored or something, and heli skiing in alaska just isn't an option for me. I dunno, I just can't relate to newer movies that are coming out that are specifically geared towards powder skiing and bc booters. I would kill to do it, but i hate watching it. I would love to see more movies like wicked now adays. Anyone feel me on this one?

Have you seen Believe?

You should. I don't think I had to fast forward through that once.

I completely disagree, though I can't imagine your pain. You just have to try to get out there. This season, the BC skiing has become everything to me. The park has been closed and not great and being in Chamonix I have found a whole new love for the BC stuff. BC is where I see skiing going the most. I feel that in the pow is where people can get most creative and go the biggest, therefor thats where I see myself spending my time. One thing I will say is the BC doesn't get half the respect it deserves. Half the people on here (not saying you) think its just as hard to throw down in the park, which is entirely wrong.

haha 7 springs represent!!

anyways, i understand what you're saying but don't agree. the park has been sick lately though. anyways once you ski some real pow pow and drop a cliff or make your own bc booter, nothing else compares...

Hey, that's great. Nobody's making you watch them, so there really isn't a problem.

Why did you make this thread again?

It sounds epic man. I would love to ski some real terrain, and please belive me when I say i don't question the dificulty nor the respect that should be given to shreding in the BC. I just personally just don't get to do it. Boo for me. I do tend to go to whislter for the summer, but glacier snow isn't very different then east coast spring snow.

Notice how i said i'm bored at work. And i'm not complaining dude I'm just sparking alittle convorsation. Hell maybe because i haven't been hitting powder! But i'll leave you to your more IMPORTANT threads, tough guy.

I understand where you're coming from to a degree.

I like watching Wanderland, more than Idea, because it is more accessible to me and more personal.

Park skiing relates to you more, therefore you want to watch it more.

I'm from upstate New York and I got into the whole freeskiing thing when Ski Movie and The Game came out. Back then all i wanted to see was park and rails. However, since moving to Seattle for 4 years and skiing Baker and Stevens... and now I'm in Colorado... I find myself bored watching park in movies. In fact, I got bored with park alltogether and now I just hike to find untracked pow and cliffs. East coast and West coast mentalities are so different, you just gotta experience it to appreciate it.

Thats painful man. Save your money and go to Whistler in the winter when its good. Ski some pow for a week strait by then you'll be comfortable in it and you will never think of skiing the same way again. I wasn't directing the post about not thinking BC takes talent towards you though. Just get out and rip it!

I somewhat agree with the thread creator. I would like to see more rails and park. I still find teh bc shots cool though even though it is a littler harder to relate.

living in buffalo i get no backcountry. but when i go to colorado its all i ski. i love every aspect about the backcountry.

1) not beeing in a crowded park full of kids with attitude just looking to show somebody up.

2) every run is different

3) its easier on my back and knees

4) big floaty 3's are sooo nice

5) nice scenery, feels like im one with nature

6) charging a run with a few sketchy cliffs and close calls gets the adrenaline pumping.

7) shredding the pow pow is the best feeling in the world for me

i can go on and on so ill stop there, but the things i want to see in movies is the stuff i dont get to ski. im kinda bored with pros taking another cruise through the park but just filming it this time. park skiing has turned more into gymnastics rather than true skiing. the difference beeing a cliff you never hit before with variable snow conditions or a perfectly groomed jump that has been hit many many times over

I can undersand where you are coming from. I like the park segments the best in movies because it's the only thing I know... I am from Wisconsin and it's the only place I have skied which includes my 350 vertical foot home hill. Such things as Powder and Cliffs are an unknown territory to me that I have never experianced, had the chance to experiance, or even seen in my life. In fact, I have NEVER seen a mountain. Some of the responses in this thread has shown me just how ignorant some members are. It's not our fault we haven't had the priveledge to grow up next to a world class resort with hundreds of inches of annual snowfall and the best terrain on Earth. We make best with what we have and it's what we have to form our opinions on. Anybody who says "just move out west" or "take a trip out west", please do me a favor and take your head out of your ass. You think we haven't thought of that? It's called money, and it doesn't grow on trees. Some of us are also restricted by age and school and unless we want to drop out and hitch hike across the nation, we aren't going to be skiing any mountains soon.

I don't really know where I was going with that, I don't even know what the point of this thread is anymore.

/end rant.

hey fag bag. some of us don't have the fuckin choice. dumb asses like you need to realize that what you got is not the norm. seriously, all the dumb fucks like you that think we're idiots for living on the east cost need to get your heads out of your god damn ass.

fuckin bitch.

I am in 100% agreement with the thread creator. I love watching park and rails and most of the time big bc booters are fun to watch only if sick shit is getting thrown off them. Like go back to session 1242 and whoevers segment it is where the dudes running next to the train i hate that segment, its all bc lines and i hate it i jus fastforward through tht shit. N then go to my favorite segment of them all Sammy Carlsons segment in Ski Porn, I would watch segments like that over and over. Example, Realtime, I love the beginning when they are doing the urban n stuff n then I love the end where it was all park shoots, the middle absolutely sucks and I cant watch it without wanting to go to sleep. But then again Im from the east coast

100% agree and i agree with the thread creator. i cant relate to big mountain skiing and bc powder skiing so its boring to watch. but park is boring too to watch. well the x games is because its way to repeatative. fuck it.

and like that kid said, we all didn't grow up near huge resorts and/or have rich parents or parents that are into skiing at all.

if you havent had a chance to dip your toes into the BC then you have no reason say its boring to watch or anything like that. skiing lines and stomping shit 1st try is what its all about. skiing off a mtn peak into the abyss with cliffs trees and mad pow IS skiing.

once you experience powder and hiking for your turns and findings nice pillow lines you will never want to go backc into the park unless the rest of the mountain is tracked. to ski 2 feet of fresh is the greatest feeling in the world you dont need to be goin fast you just cruise and chill and have fun now think about making a lap through the park its fun and i really like park too but u fall in the bc no bigge u might just have a stinger granted your landing into lots of fresh. on the other hand you fall and kunckle on a table its a bit differnt. both types of skiing are great but i think you need to experince the feeling of 2 feet of fresh before you can say that bc is boring and not fun to watch

thats everything i dream of dude, but i've never been out west. hopefully next year tho. then again i was supposed to go out west twice this year but that fell through sooo.....

and i totally agree with the "kids with attitude just looking to show some one up". very accurate

with a handle like the king you should be more on top of this shit. just save $ and find a couch to sleep on then its on.

I don't do enough BC it is just soooooo appealing, gliding through fresh Pow, has to be the best feeling ever... I'm going to Zermatt (Swiss) in 1 week they have loads of "itinerary routes" which are un-pisted suggested bc routes, marked on piste maps; I can't wait !!!!!!!!!!! I'm gonna spend the whole week powder plundering ! I'll let you guys know if its as good as i think it will be

yo I am from pittsburgh (mt. lebo) and skied 7 springs and dident have very many experiences with riding big mountains until I moved out west. Now I ride 90% big mtn/ 10% park.... the whole mountain is a park out west...

Same. Kinda. I rode in NY for a while, mostly park cuz there wasnt much else....now I ride most everything but park(Utah). The whole mountain IS a park, agree completely.

And to the kids saying theres no chance for them to move out west...start doing really well in school and get kick ass grades which will save you some money in going to school out west. Its worth it, trust me.

im from ct and i kno wut ur sayin, but u definitely have chances to do wut the cats r doin in the movies even on the east coast. here's wut u need to do...

1) season pass to someplace north where it snows

2) ski ur local hills only when u cant go another day without skiin

3) wait for the storms to hit, then go to the place u have ur season pass

4) on the lift, scope out newhere out of bounds that has an opening in the trees

5) grab ur shovel, ur friends, and start buildin a kicker right in the trees

6) make sure ur landing is in the opening in the trees

7) hit it

8) and u have urself a bc kicker

9) go ski some other lines if ur bored with kickers

10) and u have urself slow trees

11) and u now can relate to the movies!!!!!

TO EVERYONE ON THE EAST COAST...

don't bitch about how the snow sucks. plenty of snow comes with plenty of opportunity for all sorts of fun stuff, ski lift access or right off the road.

tip: bring some J's for the trips, if not when ur skiin, u may want somethin to amuse u when ur buildin that jump

well...i think i know why you dont like it....you live on the east coast, not to be a dick or anything but east coast sucks for bc, so unless you HAVE gone to whistler or alaska and tried real pow skiing, then you are just dissing on pow because your type of pow skiing sucks

powders fun but if thats all i ever did i think id feel like a pussy. Unless i was dropping monster cliffs

completely agree. even on the east. take some trips to stowe or jay. theyve got some sick cliffs with a wild backcountry. i got that sort of "shit your pants" feeling just two weeks ago and im in connecticut. explore your boundaries son!! its worth it.

Copy that....

yea, you hit the nail on the head with that, bring on the POW (6 days until I go to Zermatt...cant wait for those freshies!!!)

I like to hit both natural and man made terrains.

If I see something I'd like to jib, I just have to do it and jib it.

people are to obsessed with big cliff, big jumps, rails and eveything. I'm skiing because it's wath I love. I dont care if anyone did something twice as big somewhere else I,m just into sking and jibbing whatever I fweel like interesting.

and another dope park of skiing the bc is that it is all free...in utah the ost gnarley lines are out of bounds and you dont need a lift ticket...the needle, romans, superior and the list goes on all you need is a way to get up...

Amen, couldn't have said it better myself. If you have never been above treeline on some fat skis, you are seriously, seriously missing out.

You do realize there is good terrain just north of you in the UP. It is by no means out west but I get 10 days of knee deep pow in a year and ride glades and drop cliffs.

To the thread creator, you may just need to do it to understand it. A great BC snowboarder Nicolas Muller used to do the same thing to videos. He would say this sucks, you can't even see their grab...fast forward. He went to AK in 2001 and now only rides BC making sick video parts. Get out there and try it and you will understand it.

That is also 6 hours north of me and between paying for lift tickets, the gas, somewhere to stay, and getting the perfect timing to ski only knee deep is a quite the hastle...

i can agree with u. i see bc skiing the same as surfing, its really fun to do, but i cant stand watching it. i dont mind seeing a huge floater 3 or 5 every now and then, but when u get a 15 min stretch of them, it gets old unless something new happens.
