Dirtbike...

i have multiple retarded noob questions, so if you specialize in answering multiple retarded noob questions and you know about dirtbikes, then this is the place for you
first off, i know very little about dirtbikes, i'll tell you everything you need to know about mountain bikes, but talking about these things i'm useless. i know about cc and all that shit and how these work basically but i'm not current on models and different uses, i know there are a lot of ns'ers who do a lot with these

i've always ridden the kind of bike that you have to pedal but in order to ride those you need trails. we're looking into a dirt bike for building singletrack on our property so we can mountain bike in there, we have a hefty chunk of land in so. vt and we want something to slice in some gnar singletrack. so i have 2 questions, what kind of bike do i want, and where can i get one?
first, it needs to be 4 stroke, therefore around 250cc so it doesn't flip over when you crush the throttle in 3rd gear, a trusted motorcycle mechanic friend gave us these guidelines so we're sticking by them. it can be 5-10 years old but i'd rather not older than that, and looking to pay anywhere from 500-1500, it needs to work decently and be nimble enough to get in the woods but big enough to cut through gnar shit so we can start building trail. i don't want some little childrens 80cc bike thats top speed is 23 mph, this needs to be pretty hefty but i don't want something absolutely massive that will kill me, hence why i'm liking the 250cc range. the land is pretty rough, not super thick forest just untravelled. also we can't have something too too big or else it'll tear the shit out of our trails
second, i wouldn't begin to know where to look for one of these, craigslist would be an option but i don't really know what kind of bike i'm looking for. i'm sure there're good places to look that i don't know about. i'm in southern vt so anything in southwestern NH, western MA, , northern CT, or in VT like below killy is ideal but i can travel further to get one, but it needs to be close to me
so thanks for the help, ask if you need any more info on what i need

A honda CRF 150 is a good bike for most people...but im not understanding what exactly this bike is going to be for, i couldnt quite discern from your post...I have a Yamaha 225 and a Honda XR 100, and they are both great, but i would say honda or KTM are the way to go probably... a 150 or 250 in honda is good. I wouldn't base anything on just what i say though...

sorry when i meant i couldnt really tell what you were using it for its just i was confused about you using it to create single tracks for mountain biking? is that it? cause if thats all your doing then it probably doesn't need to be in great condition either..

i love how im the only one posting in this and no one else has even said anything.
so, in conclusion of thinking it over after posting all that retarded crap...in my not so expert opinion, a Honda CRF 150 (or 250) or a KTM 450. there. im done. bleh

You'd be fine with any KTM XC (obviously 250 and up) but KTM are very trustworthy and I really enjoy riding them

Are you dumb?

He wants a trail bike and you're directing him towards race bikes.

If you can find a CRF/XR 250X in that price range, buy it. I would look on craigslist for one, probably from like 2002-2005.

Basically any offroad 250 would be a great bike (Yamaha WR250, KTM XCF/XCF-W 250) for you. Maybe even a little too much for a first bike, depending on your size and how much riding experince you have.

^^i'm about 6'0 170 and i don't have much riding experience at all, my dad is a similar size and he has very much experience, he grew up riding a honda 250 when he was like 12, so we don't need a total noob bike
as for use, i'll tear around the whole property on this thing so it needs to be decently good but it is mainly for getting trail in unreachable spots by 4 wheeler, so definitely a trail bike, i'm not doing any racing on this, but i want something nimble enough to maneuver easily around trees and stuff, not just a tank that goes straight

Honda CR500, you won't regret it.

But really, sounds like you need a Honda XR250R. Honda's are great bikes to learn on, and they are super reliable. Plus there are a bunch around and shouldn't be too expensive.

I rode my YZ250 (2-stroke race bike) on trails and it was so fun.. just tearing shit up. If you had ridden a lot I would say just go for a WR450 Yamaha, you wouldn't get bored on that thing..

it seems like they discontinued that in 1989, would it be okay to have that old a bike?we were advised to stick within the realm of 10 years, 20 might be pushing it but i have no idea
i was also looking at the crf250x but it's crazy expensive

i would get something smaller i have a Yamaha 125 and its really light so its good for bushwhacking through the woods plus its big enough to carry my brother on the back with a chainsaw

ha i have an 85 and for your information they dont putt around 23 mph. they haul with a top speed at around 60. but for your size id say a ktm 300exc good bike its made to do the stuff you want (crud, uphills, etc.).

Try and shy away from a motocross bike for your first bike. Look for an offroad bike(crf230 or anything in the yamaha ttr/wr line) Pretty much any bike that doesn't end with "R"(racing) and above 150cc will be a safe smart choice.

XR series is before Honda integrated their two lines of bikes. (Enduro and Motocross)

Now both line are CRF. The only difference is X or R at the end of the numbers. R for racing and X for.....not racing.

yep i understand that
i'm also checking out the CRF250X and the CRF230X, the 230 is much lower end but idk if it'll suck or still be okay
also any suggestions of very similar bikes but made by other companies?
i e-mailed that craigslist guy to see if he'd go lower on the price

Yeah I know, I was just confirming what you said.

Also check out the WR 230 and 250.

Both almost exactly like the CRF230 and 250X.

when i was younger i used to have a ktm, i fucking loved it but it broke down like every other month. theyre really expensive to maintain

I would get an XR 250 or something along those lines. What u really want is a bike with enough power to get u up and down steep hills and over big logs. if this is your first bike than don't worry about its looks too much because you will be bound to dump it a few times.

when looking at bikes make shure they start/ run well and bring your mechanic friend along to look at the bike. check EVERYTHING! look at the frame for dents/ missing chunks, check the bearings, chain, sprockets, breaks, spokes, suspension, compression, tread left on tires, and the clutch. you want a bike that will be as reliable as the day it was bought from the dealer.

Dirt bikes are a ton of fun in the woods, espically if you have your own land to make trails in. If only i was closer to where you live then we could ride together and make some bomb trails : )

are you set on a bike? i had a four-wheeler growing up, and it was a blast - you can use it in the summer and the winter. we had a polaris 300, and it could go over fallen trees and through 3 ft. deep snow in 4WD

I raced moto for seven years. Get a Yamaha YZ125 or YZ250F. I'd recommend the 125 though, it makes you a way better rider, just because they're harder to ride, and you have to be a lot more precise in your clutch and throttle work, whereas a 4-stroke you just give it gas and it'll track anywhere. Once you get on a four stroke you'll rip the shit out of cause you'll ride it like a 2-stroke. 2-strokes are a lot less expensive to maintain as well, it's easier to rebuild those things. 4-strokes will cost you near $1500-$3000 if you blow them up.

Kawi's are junk, honda's are good, but don't get an XR or a CR250F-X. Those bikes are just heavy and you'll want something lighter and faster in a month. 2-strokes

At 6'0 170 a 125cc won't be over the top for you but it'll give you plenty to work with and get comfortable on.

DONT GET A TRAIL BIKE; GET A RACE MODEL; YOU'LL THANK ME LATER

this man speaks the troof. i love my cr125. it's ridiculously light and keeps up with my dad's crf250r just fine. i can out accelerate him. plus 2 strokes sound so much better imo
