My friend and I got in a heated debate today about T-rex's being able to smell. I said they could because they have nostrils and in Jurassic park, he cleary smells the humans, but my friends say they can't smell. Also, he sayed they can only see stuff moving but I say they can see stuff stationary.

Could some of you help us on this?
 
nobody knows this stuff for certain. all they have to work with is decayed bones. you cant accurately predict their intellicence and their sight through this. so your debate is too open for error
 
Okay so.. do you want to know what we think? Or are you just stating some facts. Cause we don't want to give opinions if you didn't ask you know.. well some do... but anyway I don't think anyone knows for sure. Unless you create a time machine.
 
The terydactil(sp) is def my favorite animal, then comes the tadpole. Everyone makes the T-Rex to be a badass, but in The Lost World, Sharp Tooth gets beat by two kid dinosaurs.

T-Rexs can smell.
 
im one of those kids who never grew out of their obsession with dinosaurs. im currently working on my anthro major with an archaeology option so i can find dino bones for a while.

they actually may be able to answer this question pretty soon. an ethnoarchaeobiologist in Montana recently was able to derive red blood cells from the most recently discovered T-Rex. She was able to figure out that the T-rex was a female and was pregnant. HOW rediculous is that?

as for my opinion, they can totally smell. they have to. havent you ever seen Land Before Time or read Little Blue Brontasaurus? (spelling of that?)
 
i'm going to have to say that yes they could smell. scientists now say they they were scavengers and not the big bad predators that everyone believes them to be. so how does a scavenger scavenge food with out smelling it? the dinos that would go kill the food wouldn't allow another dino to tag along with it and eat for free. nay! back then them bitches were hard,don't take shit from no one unless they were bigger and stronger... but i heard all this from scientists and they are smarter than me so being easily brainwashed by the media, whether it is true or not, i am obligated to believe what they say.
 
k those movies were made from the same people who guessed on what attributes dinosaurs had from their bones. paleontology has come a long way since the land before time movies were made and they didnt have the same genetic technology back then to determine the blood cells of a t-rex and that its pregnant.

so you cant base your opinions on the theories from jurassic park or (especially) land before time seeing how its a little kid cartoon.

also you know how they created the dinosaurs in jurassic park (from the story)? they took blood samples from mosquitos preserved in amber and replaced fragmented DNA with frog DNA. they actually tried to do this but the DNA was too fragmented from the blood cells to do so. i actually thought that it could work when i read the book.

imagine that...fuckin seeing a dinosaur again. i was the biggest dinosaur lunatic when i was a kid. i was an encyclopedia. i used to dig up my backyard looking for bones and every time id hit a tree root i thought it was a bone and id dig the fuck out of it and then my dad would come out and get mad at me and slap me for digging up the yard.
