Digital slr

ive been looking around on the previous threads about these cameras, a lot of suggestions on the rebel xt and various nikon DXX. also some canons too.

ive been going through dpreview.com and finding out what i want, im having a tough time though because there are so many different combinations of features i have no idea.

i will mainly be shooting stationary things or low movement, i won't be doing any shots that require sequences, such as taking a picture of a skier on a jump. i think it will mainly be landscape stuff. i think we might be taking a driving trip out west so it will probably be a high pixel camera. i won't need the 5fps sequence rate like on some nikons, so it might be a canon. i will most likely be buying a lense as well so i can maximize the performance of the camera. i already have a point and shoot digital camera which is a ricoh caplio r4 6.0mp, but coming from a manual slr background i would like to feel more in control of the pictures that i take.

thanks.

i'm a huge canon fan, i have the 30d but that has the burst feature which you said you didnt need. the xti is good, i dont think it feels as solid in your hand, but it doesnt cost as much. so yeah you cant really go wrong with that nikon^ or the xti, you should go to best buy and shoot both of them before you buy, its like buying skis. you dont buy skis without riding them first, at least i dont. same thing with a camera. then after you shoot them, go to bhphoto.com or rainbowtronics.com. both pretty good/reliable sites.

if i did end up with a rebel i would probably get the 17-85mm EF-S lense.

my philosophy is get a high end entry level camera and spend some decent money on glass.

in toronto we have www.henrys.ca and www.vistek.ca so i could try out both those stores, maybe get some advice. ive heard of the rebel being awkward to hold for people with big hands unless they get the battery pack, but i can't comment until i hold it myself.

does anyone know anything about the D40? or any of the pentax K10D or K100D??

dont do the d40. I would suggest the D80 for a sub 1000 priced body. are you trying to get a body, lens, memory card, and other misc. accessories for under 1000, or are you just trying to get the body for under 1000?
