For people who have used them, what is your opinions? What model do you have and what do you like about it.

How much better are the digital SLR's v. the high end digital's?

I currently have a 5.3 megapixel with a 56x zoom and am very satisfied with it. I am looking to do more stuff with different lenses and stuff.

i have an 8mega-pixel digital right now. its not an slr (coolpix 8700) its a nice camera, i dont use it a bunch and i cant compare it to any other digitals but the quality is fuckin sweet.

If you are comparing cameras like the Nikon D70, or Canon Digital Rebel to advanced digital compacts like the Nikon 8700, I would definitely go for the SLR. SLRs have far more lens options than the digital compacts, and even though most digital compacts have 8 megapixels and the SLRs have 6, the SLR will have better image quality. Digital SLRs will have far less problems with nosie or digital grain than the advanced compacts. Also, if your interested in doing ski photography, the burst mode and autofocus of the digital SLRs willl be much better. I have a D70, and am very happy with it.

 
I have a Canon 20D and I love every aspect of it. Pretty good noise levels at high ISOs and perfect for sequences (5 fps). It's 8.2MP and shooting RAW lets you fix any white balance mistakes you make along the way (shooting RAW slows down the frame rate, but Large/Fine JPEG sequences are obviously still high quality). So much better than a point-and-shoot for the main reason that you can get better lenses (like a good fisheye). I have the Canon 50mm f/1.8 II (cheapest fixed focal Canon sells) and you can't get much better than f/1.8 in low light. If you do buy one, I'd suggest getting the body and lens separate, the zoom they sell you in the kit is pretty low-end. Thanks for the input. I am a pretty experianced digital camera user but have never used a SLR film or digital before. How difficult are they to use?

Digi SLRs are better by far.

I've found that most digital cameras that I've used have some delay, even if you lock exposure before shooting.

Also digi SLRs have a much bigger sensor for the most part. Which means higher quality.

If you read the manual through before you use it you will be ok, then when you get more used to adjusting everything, read it through again later.

The thing I forgot to mention is the 20D has a 1.6x crop factor which means that every lens focal length is magnified by 1.6x, which is good if you want to get more out of a telephoto, but it's both hard and expensive to go real wide. Canon's working on getting their EF-S line of lenses out, and they have a 10-22m zoom which with the 1.6x factor gets you as wide as 16mm ($800).

If you use the F lenses with a 35mm film camera, do you get vignetting? Or why can't it be used with non digi slr cameras?

Those lenses are designed for digital SLRS, so the will vignette on a 35mm camera. Since the digital sensor is smaller than 35mm film frame, the digital designed lenses project light on a smaller area. If they are used on 35mm, the light coming through the lenses and focusing on the film wont fill the entire frame. You would have unexposed film edges.

 
With these camera's can you attach normal lenses you would have for you video camera if the filter threads are the same mm? Or do you have to buy those 6 inch long lenses for different zooms?

I currently have a bunch of 58mm lens adapters, tele fisheye wide angle, and it would be nice to use them with the camera I buy. Which camera's do you guys recommend. I would like to spend less than $1k and have seen some older 4-5 megapixel digital SLR's on eBay for about $500. The Olympus E-10 or E-20 and the Cannon EOS Rebel 6.3 MP. Are there any others you guys suggest?

i got my Rebel (Canon entry level SLR) for $800 (body). It has a lot of good features, nothing super advanced, hence the cheaper price. 6mp is pretty high quality. I have had a great experiance with it thus far. I am new to photography in general, most of my experiance has been maipulating images on the computer.

The best part about SLR is the vast amount of lenses availible. I have friends with other Canon digi SLR bodies (20D, 1D-MKII, ect) and we all trade lenses around on the mountain which makes for a really fun shooting experiance.

If your looking to keep it cheap, peep the Rebel at B&H online.

So then do you recommend purchasing just the body and buy the lens seperate?

I don't even know where to begin on picking out a lens. Great . . . more research ;)

You can't attach the digital lenses to a 35mm film camera (at least with Canon), the bayonet mounts are a little different. I imagine if you could it would vignette a bit.

As far as screwing in your extra lenses, I'm pretty sure that wouldn't work, but I've never thought of trying that. It's not like a video camera, you take off lenses and switch them. You can have no lens on your camera at any point and nothing will be in focus at all. Your filters will work if you buy a lens with the same filter diameter.

As far as lenses go, if you get a Canon, go here and download the lens brochure, I looked at that for months while I saved for my camera. You don't have to buy Canon lenses, but I learned a lot just by looking at that catalog.

B&H Photo, as suggested above, has great prices and is very reliable, go there to check prices on lenses and such.

A smaller f/number means that you can shoot at faster speeds in the same light, so keep that in mind if you shoot urban at night, that's why my first lens was the 50mm f/1.8 II.

The new Canon D20 is amazing. It's got all you could want in a prosumer camera. With 8.2 megapix, a 5fps continuous drive, Little or no noise in 1600 iso. The only drawback is the price at $1400 US. Check BHphoto for really good deals on setups. This cam has a lot of features that the Mark II has. and it won't cost you 8g's.

 
I think I have found a really good deal on a Nikon D100 which is the step up from the D70.

Anyone have this camera? What do you think?

If you go Canon, and you should, because Canon Cams rule, scope out the 28-135 Image stabilizer lens on BHphoto.com. This lens could be the ultimate all-purpose lens if you don't want to carry your entire camera bag every time you ride or shoot and urban spot.

 
My fisheye is less than impressive with my digi slr... damn small image sensor.

They need to come out with a prosumer camera with full frame sensor.

I have the Canon 28-125mm lense, with Image Stabilizer/Ultrasonic as said above, its super nice. I use it with a Canon 10D, although Wiechecki's camera (Canon 20D) is the top of the line prosumer camera from Canon right now, aside from the 1D Mark II which isn't necessary for any non-professional shooting.

Yeah if you're looking to buy a digital SLR and get a good fisheye in the very near future, I'd go for a Nikon - they've released a 10.5mm digital fisheye. I'm hoping Canon does the same thing within the next year or so.

if you have the choice, get a 10D instead of a d.rebel. I didn't, and still don't have that option, and i still love my rebel, but there are some things i wish that i had.

i have a 20d, i love it. i would stay away from the ef-s lens because if you ever go to film it wont fit on, the film cameras(for canon). a friend of mine has a nikon and i think he said that you can put digital lens on film camers, but eather way the it wont look as good as a lens that will cover the whole frame. also for the lens that canon makes the 10-20??? ef-s is not a fish eye, it is just wide and does not distort,i think.

 
^^ The d70 is a better camera than the d100? How come the d100 is more expensive than the d70 at every store?

i didn't know that. but i like the D70. it has wireless commander mode for my speedlight. tell me that's a bad feature.

Looking at the site above, it appears that the d70 is just the new model of the d100. They made it smaller and added a couple better features. Overall pretty similar but the d70 is clearly a step better.

Dam, I got tricked by the # thinking 100 better than 70.

Nothing to really complain about, I got a ridiculous deal and it will still work just fine.
