alright so im interested in getting a new digital camera. i want a sick one, like a nice slr. i have been trying to read reviews but im still really knew and i dont understand some of the more technical stuff.

im going to be using the camera for skiing amung other things. and i have about 1000 give or take to spend.

this camera looks really nice, the only downfall i can see is the fixed lens.

so, any help/reccomendations you can give me would be mega kickass. thanks.

recommendation # 1: dont get that camera.

look into canons and nikons. the digital rebel is pretty nice and so is the 30D. both from canon.

im not really up on nikons stuff but i have heard good things. so theres a start.

true. I would recommend the Canon Digital Rebel XT or XTi. Buy just the body, and then get a 50mm f/1.8 lens. That's the classic Canon starter kit right there. I'm a Canon man, so that's what I'm going to recommend, but Nikon makes some good entry levels also. Look at some other threads, because I'm sure there have been a few on entry level DSLR's. If you're looking for a little higher camera than the XT/XTi, look at the 20D or 30D, also Canon's

i have a 20D and it is great. only gripe is that its not environmentally sealed... but none of them are unless u drop like 7 grand. actually i have no idea if the nikons are but the canons arent until the 1Ds.

Thats pretty much what im gonna do. but i cant decide betweeb xt and cash or 20d. if you want to go the nikon route get a d70 and a 50mm f1.8.

I'd save up for a while longer and try to get a used 20D. I have the XT and if I could do it again, I would have waited a few more months and gotten the cash together

alright cool. im looking for a lens with a nice zoom on it. i still dont understand what the difference is in zooms. the only thing i understand is like 10X optical and stuff. not this 450-200 or whatever. ive heard some good stuff about the rebel so i will look into that.

go with the rebel. its a good entry level slr. if u think ur gonna get into it save a little and a get used 20D or new 30D. i have a 20D and im super happy that i got that instead of the rebel. ull be able to get all different types of lenses. thats wats so great about slr cameras.

Well the smaller the mm like an 18mm would be about 1.75ft. Thats the minimum distance you can focus on. Then it goes up to whatever. For a fixed lens it would be a 50mm so you get that, no zoom and you can adjust the focus according to how far away you are from the object. The f1.8 or whatever that is, is the minumum f-stop it will go to. The lower the number the more light it lets in.

alright cool, i do know about apeture and stuff. only sutff i was taught in photo class. which isnt that much.

just ordered a 400D with 17-70mm sigma lens for about 1100/1200 USD, probably cheaper in the us :>

Look into the Nikon D80. I've been looking at getting a digital SLR for a while, but shelling out $1000 is a bit too much for me right now.

As for your lenses, try to stay away from 3rd party lenses. They may be cheap, but the quality goes way down compared to Nikkor and Canon lenses.

not quite... but close...

The first length is your focal length. the 50mm lens is probably the most commonly used lens. It's the one that most closely resembles what you see with your own eyes. The longer the focal length, the more "zoom" you have.

The second number is the "speed" of your lens. The lower the f-stop, the "faster" it is. In other words, it lets in more light (as Snowcase said). You may want to get a fast lens so you can use faster shutter speeds, but with the digital SLRs nowadays, you can compromise by maxing the ISO on the camera.

If you're getting zoom lenses, try getting 2 different ones instead of just 1 that has a super wide range (ie. 28-135 and a 70-200). You'll get better pics if you use a camera with a narrower range, the best being prime lenses with only 1 focal length.
