I know there have been topics about this, and I'm 'bout to search for some of them....but....I wanna get a digi cam....range is 250-400$. I want one that is kind of smallish so I can throw it in my pocket when I go out and not have a gigantic bulge....some of my friends have the Casio Exifilm cameras (i think thats what they're called). Anyone have any suggestions? I'm read reviews and whatnot on electronics websites, but I want some feedback from real people.

Yeah - I know a guy with the latest Exilim and it's pretty sweet. You can't really go wrong with a Canon Nikon or Fuji - just find one you like the look and spec of and you're set. I has a Canon S200 that I broke so I got an S400 a few weeks ago and it's really sweet - 4Mp, 3x zoom and pretty much as small as you're going to get for that spec - no problem having it in your pocket or whatever when you go out. Sometimes I wish I'd gone for something a bit more expensive, bigger but better features like a Minolta Dimage 7i - you have to weigh up performance vs portability - I'm pretty sure there aren't any 'ultra compacts' with manual controls of any sort. For sure I use the S400 more than I would something bigger though because I can always have it on me. if you're looking for small, check out the optio s4 (or the s4i I think is the new version with some minor fixes) - from pentax. Otherwise, the canon s400, s500 can't be beat. Another site with tons of reviews is Steves Digicams..happy shopping.

Just make sure you also budget for additional memory and a second battery, you need both of these things almost immediately to get full use of your camera (some cameras use standard batteries which means you don't necessarily have to rush into buying additional batteries...)

 
I have the Olympus Stylus 300, great pictures, easy upload, decent zoom, and software works fine. I take it skiing all the time cuz its 'weather resistant' meaning if it gets a lil wet it wont get all fucked up like some I've used in the past.

i have olympus d-550 zoom its not the smallest digital cam but it also does video too

No way, a manual camera and a scanner is the way to go. Photography has gotten way to easy for people because of technology.

Yeah Gene - go for the S400 - you'll love it I'm sure. Maybe go to a store and play around with a few then buy it online. I just checked out your profile - dude, your car is the shit! I'd kill for a ride like that.

 
BamBam - Just ordered the Canon Powershot S410 (slight upgade of s400). Should be here in a couple days.

Thanks for the props on my car...but guess this....a few months ago, my dad gave my car away to charity while I was here at college....I didn't find out about it til the day it happened. My car was pretty shitty and we had to fix it a few times in the last year, so he figured it wasn't worth it anymore. But he gave it away for a tax deduction. It was a pretty rough day. But I've got new wheels now so it's all good. That car, though, was my first car so it'll hold special memories haha.

Ah, that sucks dude - looked like that car had such character. S410 - yeah, it was released quite recently I think but I've got no idea how it's different or better than the S400. Most of the places either stocked one or the other. Get a decent sized memory card for the camera though, or else you'll either not be able to hold many photos or be forced to shoot at low-res. I took on of my favourite photo ever a couple of weeks ago (check it here, and a bunch of other really good ones but because I only had a 128Mb card I had to shoot them low-res so I can't get it printed any bigger than 6x4', which really sucks. I've got a 256Mb card now which can hold 124 photos at full resolution/quality.

 
How much did you pay for a 128 or bigger card? The camera only comes with a 32 meg one so I figure I'll order a bigger one once I get home for summer.

WEll I'm in the UK so our prices are way higher. I got a 128Mb a year and a half ago for £70 locally, then a 256Mb more recently from eBay UK for about £31 shipped I think. eBay is for sure the cheapest place to get them.

You def can't go wrong with Canon, I got a new S50 (5.0 megapixel) crazy detail, and if you know how to use it you can get some awesome shots, it is capable of some very quick captures, and alot of different manual settings, you can tweak the hell out of it. All Canon's new ones at least have a metal body so they can take a bit of a beating if it gets rough... I paid $370 for mine, but I don't know if you'll be able to find it for the same...

 
I got my Canon Powershot s410 in the mail today and fucked around with it. Im really impressed. Its tiny. Great camera so far from what I've seen.

I just sold my Gl-1 for extra cash and used some of that cash for this digi cam, which gets 3 minute video clips. But if I needed video I would have kept the gl-1.

128mb cards are cheap, you can get a 4x (pretty slow) for $20 Canadian on www.tigerdirect.ca. Check their American site.
