I know many threads are on this topic, but most of them are pretty dead. I m looking to buy one not costing more than $450. One that is good for taking skiing pictures, night time, closeups. and that works well for digital art.

Am interested in graphic design.

well if you need to ask that question, i would say you're not ready for a DSLR haha, not to be mean.

the only disadvantages of a DSLR is that its quite a bit bigger than any point and shoot and way more expensive.  a DSLR gives you full control over the ISO, shutter speed, aperture, etc. also, you can change lenses. also, there's virtually no shutter lag with a DSLR.  but unless you know a lot about photography, i wouldn't get one if i were you haha.

you could go with a Nikon D40, i think its like $550, but it is an easy transition from p&s, and frankly, it is the shit

D40's are just an adanced point and shoot. go with a Digital Rebel XT. check adorama.com and bhvideophoto.com for used ones around $400.
