Digital Camera Help

Heres the deal, I just got a new camera for christmas. I know its early but we will be skiing in UT during Christmas so we celebrated early. Any how It is a canon powershot SX100 IS . It has all sorts of stuff to play around with in the manual mode. What i was wondering is what would be some good baseline settings to start out with when taking action shots. Thanks

not sure about that exact model, but it should have iso levels, which effect how fast your shutter is going to open and close, the lower the iso number the faster the shutter speed = the less amount of light. The next thing should be white balance, whitch it from auto to sunny/ daylight. You won't need flash. So just try and use the lowest iso level without getting a blurry photo, and change the white balance and that should work all right, mind you with that camera don't expect anything too professional.

just remember to shoot at a high enough shutter speed to capture the motion of skiing. I honestly have no idea what a good baseline would be. 1/500? 1/1000? not positive but I'm sure someone here will know.. also, expose the snow so it's nice and white like the current pic at the top.

^ yah you basically want to use teh faster shutter speed possible without it darkening things so you can see the detail, im not sure your camera even holds the feature of changing the shutter speed though

if you want fast results with average to good quality shots, just use auto modes, my cam has several preset modes such as snow, water, light dark fireworks, etc, but i can also like use the snow mode and then change shutter times or sensitivity, this gives great results if your a casual photographer without too much knowledge and equipment, but who wants good results.

If you really

*want to learn some shit about it, just take a photoclinic, i took one for like one evening and i learned much more then i learned before from books or websites...

Be sure to take your camera with you when you go !

also, best is to use tripods, but these are lumpy, so i got one ski-pole with a camera-mount, and i find this extremely handy for making difficult shots when experimenting with high exposure or fast movement...

you cuold basically use a monopod...but i think this skipole is probably a hybrid between monopod and ski pole, like kind of a screw at the top
