Digital camcorders good for making ski films

Can anyone on here give me some advice as to which digital camcorders would be good for capturing action on the slopes for the possible creation of a ski movie? Camera needs to be mac compatible.

Ok I'll let you in on a little secret. I bought a sonyTRV250 Hifi-8 from walmart last year. I used it for 2 and half months. I copied all the footage over to my computer and to a VHS tape. Then I returned the Camera for a full refund of 420$. Wal-mart has a 90 no-hassle return policy. If you have reciet and everything that came with the camera you can just rent it for the winter and return it in the spring or rebuy it whichever like. Don't feel bad about it either Wal-mart has put many a business out of business.

dont get a hi8 camera - get minidv. its pointless to get anything but a minidv cam

If you knew that you were going to return the camera, why didn't you get a good one?

Get a used VX1000 or GL1 whoever started the thread.

I'd go minidv but im stuck with my hi-8 it'll work but if your not stuck with car payments or whatever like me go for the mini dv

minidv is like twice the resolution. if you want to use the camera for anything besides showing grandma your railslide, get minidv

What about grandPA?

I'd get minidv or microdv or whatever because you get a mush better picture and also a much much much smaller package as a whole. As in a really small camera that has awesome quality...

On my way to goddom

im goin with a canon optura 20, it should be good........ oh yeah and all the gizmos and gadgets that sonys come with arent really necessary (like fade in/ out of the shot) because you can do that stuff when editing the shot

Don't be fooled by camera size either. You might think that you want a really small one, but unless you are using a tripod, it can be hard to keep a little one still.

Save your money for accessories, you're going to need a wide-angle converter if you want to do those under the jump style shots unless the subject is gonna be like 30 feet high. Also look for good image stabilization as this is super-important for skiing while filming.

Manual controls are important too, you'll want one where you can set your own exposure or if you're doing it in auto mode your camera's gonna blink because of the huge difference between the snow and the sky.

Hey'all, thanks to all for your help so far, it's much appreciated. Starting to get a good idea of what I should go for. As I'll be editing the footage later I suppose it'll probably better to go for a cam with better quality picture such as the canon. Keep puttin up replies though, the more there are, the more helpful it is i suppose. If I get one though, I'll let y'all know cos I'll be in Aspen round X games time, so if anyone wants to be filmed, you may be able to become part of one of Australia's first ever newschool flicks.

if ur goin with jvc get the service plan because after two years of constant use on my old minidv cam it broke and it cost 400 to fix so i said screeww it and i got a sony

I WANT TO SKI SO FUCKING BADLY I CANT STAND IT ANY LONGER

skiwolf15, if that's not a 3CCD cam then it's most likely shat. Panasonic has the worste color reproduction I've ever seen.

'Keep on rocking in the free world'

i would get digital 8, thats what ive got and i dont have one complaint, def. dont get 8 mill its goin out man.

good idea to the wal mart guy, im probably going to have to do that myself

steve, it is a 3 chip cam. and its pretty damn good to.

if your just looking to film some stuff, dont go all out on a gl2 or vx2000. just look around on ebay for a basic minidv camera. i would suggest sony, i have a trv27 and it works out pretty good. i wouldnt buy a canon unless its a gl1/2 or better.

save money for a wide angle as well.

'el tit zero three, ya gotta check that shit...........ya gotta check that shit el tit' -matt heneghan

Yeah Steve - that Panasonic is supposedly awesome - word has it that it will replace VX's as the standard in skateboard videos.

And Stu, if you can get a 3CCD as your first camera, why not go for it? I got a GL1 as my first camera because I knew that if I got a cheap 1-chip I'd want to upgrade in a few months. I found a good deal and I went for it. I know a bit about still photography, so the settings were easy to get used to, but even for a beginner there is full automatic mode, so you might as well get sopmething decent if you have the cash.

Yeah ive prolly gonna do it to walmart again this winter but. this time ill get a lil better one if I can spare not having the cash for a few months

anyone got any ideas for a camera thats about 700 or less canadian.. I was looking at the canon zr45mc

gl 2 hands down

Why don't u just go suck a fuck!.....'Oh really!? Tell me how exactly does one suck a fuck???

Your such a fuck ass! 'Did you just call me a fuck ass?! lol' *little girl comes in and says* Whats a fuck ass?

F-scratch-S, Canon's are great, if it's cheap, buy it, then buy a Wide-angle converter. You won't regret getting the converter, you'll most likely need it anyways.

yeah definately make sure you have enough money for a wideangle lense or a fisheye lense, i got a wideangle, but i am tryin to find a decent priced fisheye now

Hi-Def

Thats the shit George Lucas shot the new Star Wars flicks on..... its DIGITAL, no film. hope you got a spare 63g's laying around.

yeah if u are gonna get a camera and get some accessories then buy A new one it is hard to find accessories for old cameras. Canons are good camcorders but not the durability that sony has for the mountian...go with sony

WORD

Justo, I don't know if you have one near you, but I just went to Best Buy and paid $40 for a 0.43x fisheye and it works real good. It's made by Cokin and fits 37mm threads.

Avoid JVC at all costs almost al their video products (except professional shoulder cams and such) are shit.

Sony is the way to go, we shoot with VX-2000 and PD-150s and they really work well in harsh conditions... Battery life is way longer than on Canons, i can shoot a whole day at minus fucken freezing with my screen open and i still have some juice left at night...

Sony.

i dont have any problems with batteries on my gl1. i got one of those huge ass ones and it lasts a couple days no problem
