Digital and DSLR Cameras

I'm at a total loss at what kind of camera i should get. i'm looking for something with at least 5mp(but preferably around 6mp). Fixed lens digital cameras are nice and much cheaper but i'm hessitant to get one because i like the ability of being able to change lens with the DSLR cameras. If i were to go with just fixed lens digital, i think it would be between the Canon Powershot Pro1 or the Nikon Coolpix 8700. Both 8mp which is nice and they have great reviews. I want to get a Canon EOS Digital Rebel but SteveXs2 said that weren't that great of cameras. i was think of getting the body then getting a seperate decent lens. I'm trying to stay under $1000, which is pretty difficult with DSLR. If anyone has any suggestions, comments or can help me in any way, let me know.

This is what SteveXs2 wrote in a different similar post which should be helpful.

If the camera is super small and 5 megapixels, it'd have pretty poor quality. There's one thing you all need to know...

MEGAPIXELS DON'T MEAN SHIT

It's just like clock speed for a computer processor or the number of gears on a damn bike.

Don't just read how many megapixels it has, go to www.dpreview.com and read the reviews on digital cameras, look at 'image quality' and 'conclusions'. If anyone has a question about a digital camera, feel free to email me about it.

If you want a quality digital camera with digital video capabilities, look at this camera:

Canon Powershot S1 IS

Here's what you need to know:

- 10X Optical Zoom lens (35-350mm 35mm equiv)

- 640x480 30fps AVI video (surprisingly good)

- Image Stabilization

- Zoom with the camera

- Vari-Angle LCD

- f2.8 - f3.1 lens (fast)

Anyways, this is a quality camera, you can easily make a nice 8x10 print with it with a full sized file. It's 'only' 3 megapixels, but the quality of the lens will beat out crappy 5 megapixel cameras no problem. I'm shooting with a 3.1 megapixel professional Digital SLR and it can shoot better quality photos than any 5 megapixel consumer cameras that are 3 years newer than it.

Take me to your special place,

Close your eyes show me your face............I'm gonna piss on it

megapixels do mean shit, especiialy if you plan on croping your pictures or printing them large. Steve just says that to defend his own camera, a d30. I have a digi rebel, and I like it a lot, a lot. If you want a slr get one, there is no sense is wasting your money on a fixed lens camera. Buy the best camera you can afford, it's as simple as that. If you don't then you'll just be pissed own the road.

These were all taken with the eos300. They have all been compressed. I recently had a 11x18 photo printed and it looks very, very good. Now I know that it wouldn't look as good with less mega pixels.

'It was probably the most improved park in north america last year. That's mostly due to us getting up at fucking 8 am everyday and raking like monkeys, untill we were to baked to talk. Every now and then some texan would eat shit and it would be funny and we would call ski patrol on our radios. we would steal food from the base and cook it on our grill, then heckle people on the lift with our mega phone while we played frisbee across the run. and took naps behind the shack in the most exclusive hut on the mountain. o christ, best winter ever.'

film is expensive and inconvenient. i'm almost definatly going with the fixed lens Nikon Coolpix 8700 8mp. expresscamera.com or gives good package deals. the nikon comes with a built zoom macro/telephoto. its pretty sweet. its gotten good reviews too. Megapixels don't mean shit up to a certain point. With 8mp's i could be printing posters, and compressed down to a, say, 600x450, the detail would be incredible.

hmm lets see, for the camera + 32mb card + carrying case + cleaning kit + 256mb card + high speed usb card reader + filter kit + deluxe cleaning kit + tripod = $840 (thats in a special package from expresscamera.com).

good considering the price of the other 8mp cameras out there. this camera got a really good rating on www.dpreview.com, which is tought to get.

I've had two digi nikons break on me. i swore off nikon for the rest of my life after they wouldn't reapir their shitty ass cameras.

i shoot will film and it is expensive if you want to develope your own prints. it's a lot of money to make your own darkroom. also when you shoot with film and you under or over expose or just generally mess up a shot you've wasted that film. whereas with digital you can just delet the picture.

you can't tell us we can't sell Pent House in Abbotsford!

Phrosty, that was retarded. It's downright obvious, a camera with a sensor that's like 26 x 20mm compared to a camera with a sensor the size my thumbnail.. there's no comparison.

Those little 5mp cameras out there have tiny sensors, which means the pixels are literally crammed in there, they're like 10 square microns per pixel or something, whereas on the D30 the pixels are like 120sq microns. That means far less noise on the D30 than the consumer cameras, even for how old it is.

You're right, the Digital Rebel does have better image quality than the D30, no shit, it's the same sized sensor but twice as many pixels and newer technology. Digital Rebel blows though because you can't do shit with it.

I donno if this has been metnioned yet, but the top of the line sony digital is really sweet, I forget the model name. Anyways I was playing with it today at best buy and it seemed pretty nice, it shoots 8 megapixels and has alot of the manual adjuystments u would find in an 35mm camera. If you are willing to spend a grand i would suggest it.

my family just got a casio ex p600 digi cam, its 6 mp (like twice the size of my computer screen, i like it, you should look at it, it doesnt have the best zoom and its a fixed lens but i like it, it also has a fast shutter speed on sport mode.

32mb is gonna be way too small of a card for you.

and did you ever think of going used? you can get good stuff cheap that way if you take your time.......... ebay's ratings are a very good indicator.........

anyway, i've got a d.rebel, and i agree with stever to a point. it has it's limitations. BUT, if you can live with those limitations, it still cranks out very good pictures.
