What is the difference between rap and hip hop?

You can't spell crap without rap

no defined difference, sometimes i think of it like this:

Rap completely focuses on lyrics which are typically quicker

Hip Hop: focuses on the two w/ slightly more emphasis on words, singing typically slower

hip hop has more of a message. Alot of hip hop artists are more of lyricists and poets, they have a way with words and use them to talk about things that matter.

Rap is more of gangster mentality. Straight off the streets of Compton and sing about money, bitches, and the dubs on their impala.

hip hop is the music. rap is defined as the type of singing they are doing in the music

Well some rapper/hip-hopper once said that they used to call hip-hop rap. So I would assume that rap is just older. Like we dont call what we do freestyle anymore, we call it freeskiing. It's all the same.
