destroy- i thought that after lifting it is best to pump your body full of protien because when your muscle tissue is torn is the best time to build it up.

first off, if you actually tear your muscles while lifting you are doing it horribly wrong. true, consuming protein after lifting or working out does help, but drinking a protein shake RIGHT after you lift isnt going to give you any major advantages over eating a steak and broccoli for dinner.

thw whole point in lifting weights to get bigger is to break ur muscles down and then when they grow back they grow back stronger and bigger. how the hell are ur muscles suppose to grow and repair themselves with out taking protein?

i could see the point of not taking protein if ur trying to tone ur muscles or slim down but if ur trying to get bigger id suggest taking protein at the least.

 
it also takes the body a while to process the protein that y time relase protein is better and id suggest taking it 2-3 times a day so ur body is gettin a constant supply of protein

 
dude, if you're saying the purpose of lifting is to tear your muscles so they regrow bigger you have no idea what you are talking about. i'll get back to you guys with info about whether taking a supplement right after you work out will make a difference or not, im pretty sure it doesnt give any large advantages though.

You are much better off getting the protein through the food you eat, opposed to a supplement. I find that eating a diet consisting of meat and veggies is the healthiest way to go, especially if you want to get in shape.

true body builders eat their weight in protein everyday. That is if you weighed 180 lbs. you would consume 180+ grams of protein daily, thats why professional bodybuilders who know what they are doing use their meals as the most solid source of protein and drink supplemental protein either before, during, or after workouts.

i may be one of the most horrible dieters ever and have the worst eating habits, but diet pills are not the way to go, the side effects are extremely dangerous, they just pulled one of the most famous diet pills off the market recently because it turned out to have such bad side effects. diet pills are not the way to go, eat healthy and excercise, the most important thing to do when you are injured is to keep eating, even if you arent hungry, you cant shrink your stomach.

ya i understand that eating well is better than taking protein but for alot of people it is easier because they dont have a steak waiting for them when they get home or lift before school like me and dont have anyting healthy to eat

Ok some of you are right and wrong. To build muscles they do have to be broken down but not TORN. There is a differenc. But, if you can't do any physical activity you arn't going to be gaining muscle the most important thing ot maintain what you have now is a steady diet and a good multivitamin. Mega men is good but all you really need is your basic vitamins and mega men has a lot of other supplements in it geared towards bodybuilding, but since you already bought it, it will do the trick.

i gained about 60 pounds in 5 months. but thats probably because i also grew about 4 inches in 5 months.

destroy is got it pretty right on...you gotta keep your diet full of 'clean' foods, and instead of concentrating on protein after working out, work on a high-glycemic (i.e. sugary) carb - even something like grape juice is good. Take that immediately after your workout (i.e. within 10 minutes)

You will want some protein within about an hour, normally about an hour after, I'd suggest a real meal of real food is better then any powders or supplements, just make sure your meal at that point is balanced (i.e. 40/40/20 of protein/carbs/fats).

As for creatine, it is great for building, but it sounds like the goal is not to build, but to ensure he doesn't gain, so I'd stay away from creatine, your weight is guaranteed to go up immediately when you do your 'loading' phase of the creatine.

The only other supplements I'd maybe suggest is Glutamine, which aids in the recovery of your muscles, and helps your immune system, it's not really necessary, but I have found it does work.

That and try and get that 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight, no matter whether building or cutting...

And you'll have to stay light on the beer and alcohol...everything in moderation..

not sure if mega men is what you should have then...given your circumstances i would have bought some hydroxycut (ephedra free). it works great and gives you loads of energy. you can eat normal and still maintain your shape. it does work.

Can you explain to me how drinking grape juice after his workout is going to help him lose weight? In order to lose weight, you need to keep your blood sugar level balanced. Spikes in insulin will prohibit weight loss and make you hungry. I suggest cutting out all sugar, if you really are serious about not gaining weight. I am currently having to lose the weight i gained since my injury, its very frustrating, epsecially since my knee only allows me to work out so much. Im not trying to preach low carb, but at least watch out for the sugar. (Im not saying fruit is bad for you, but its not going to make him lose weight)
