Well, here's my take on racing if anyone cares, lol
First off, I have to agree that if you learn in a racing class, it does help your skiing. I was in a race class from age 3 to 14, and then i switched over to newschool. I'm so glad i did, and I think the day i decided to stop racing was when I was at a provincial competition(Manitoba Games) and I was the only one there not in spandex with a quiver of skis. I was on Dorions, decked out in new Sessions gear and all these fat kids in yellow spandex with 4 pairs of skis were snickering at me. I raced well(slalom), but at the end i caught an edge and ended up riding the last 3 gates out switch. I get to the lift and some kid who got 2nd who must have been 200 lbs easy was like 'it would be nice to afford real skis, then you wouldn't have such problems with your last few turns'. I just about decked the shit. I realized that day what the racing world was like, at least how it treated me. When you ride newschool, no matter if you're hucking 180's or switch bio 9's, nobody's gona say 'i didn't like your turn leading up to that table'.
Racing is good for you in the sense it teaches you to really feel your skis, and i have friends who never raced who have a harder time being comfortable riding switch and keeping speed in the pipe, and i think that's a big part of it.
