Did SKITHEEAST sell out?

I wish I did not have to write this because it used to be my favorite brand, but they stopped selling tall-t's! wtf SKITHEEAST.

you used to be core.

Meatheads sold out. Ski the east was always the money grab. And as I understand it those homies have been successful with it. Props to them.

Lol sold out...

They are in their late 30s with families running a company that supports people... Like a job...

They are also created out of the most core stock, and in turn helped MAKE some of the most core skiers in the game like LJ and Will.

You probably need to rethink things.

I love how a demographic that for the most part buys the cheapest made in China ski they can get their hands on gets mad that small brands associated with skiing have the audacity to actually want to run a successful business.

Bold of you to assume I don't buy the most expensive made in China ski I can get my hands on

Honestly I don't really care about where skis are made as much as I care about how much a brand supports their team, putting out projects, making good skis etc. I assume you're referring to Vishnu btw. I do think it would be nice if skis could be made locally and sustainabily but that's not always realistic.

Bro if u want Tall T’s there is literally a brand for that and they’re core as fuck, I don’t think ski the east has ever been an outerwear brand anyways lol

I'm not, but whatever. And you're thinking is kind of backwards, teams exist as advertising. It's not about support, it's a give and take. Brands invest in projects for the betterment of the brand. Not because they are philanthropists who want to make sure ski bums don't have to get a real job to support their skiing.

To be fair, LJ can be inspired by a ham sandwich. He didn't need Ben Leoni or Radio Ron's inspiration to do chicken flips.

this thread is a terrible take imo. For 15 years, Ski the East has supported dope ass east coast skiers. So many of everyone’s fav skiers started off with ski the east (LJ and Will, lupe heagarty, dale talkington, Keegan kilbride, Sam zahner, Bennie osnow, and Jacob Belanger just off the top of my head). It’s not like they just make powder porn content. They have made urban parts and they have done more park shoots than any other company I can think of. They have hosted and supported events from Ski the East freeride tour to Rails to Riches and east coast slvsh games. Growing up I couldn’t wait for the next ski the east videos to release because it was the first time I was seeing content from parks I had actually skied before and from places I had access to go ski (white mountains, Adirondacks, and mt Mansfield area). That got me so hype as a young skier. I can’t think of anyone who influenced me in the same way.

I don’t think not making a tall t means they aren’t a dope brand. Very few companies have made tall ts since like 2012. Just because they don’t make videos of people breaking tables and smoking darts on handycams doesn’t mean they aren’t a dope ass brand. But you what they do have? Weather forecasts with Tim Kelly. That shits core as fuck.

I'm from the West Coast, if any SkiTheEast punks think they can come to my neighborhood... They've got another thing coming.

That isn't what the thread is about. Yea, they used to do cool stuff for a lot of sick riders. Definitely influential, especially a few years back, but this threat is about today. Today they mainly sell clothes that they bulk order once in the fall to all the Connecticut families that go skiing a few times a year. They're stuck in 2011 thinking that nothing has changed and it shows. Try getting paid by them to do literally anything outside of being an employee. I've tried to work with them a few times. No money involved because "It's a privilege to work with ski the east". That mindset is why there's an ass-backwards flow of money in the industry. Multiple homies have left STE cuz it's a downward spiral. They haven't done anything that cool in years. Video projects? yea they just "hired" someone to make videos but don't plan on paying because of the "privilege". Promotions? only for their soft goods. Events? I haven't heard anything in a long time (covid year I know but we have the technology to get around that).

I don't care if they don't make tall T's but they are one of the only major east coast brands with money. They have a system to sell to people on the fringe of the ski industry and put that money into their pockets which is how you stay successful in this market. I respect their awareness of it and I don't blame them for that, but since they won't pay out, what are they actually offering the community anymore? Genuine question.

tldr - STE used to do cool shit for the community, locked in an ideal market, then stopped doing cool shit for the community in recent years and they've have a steady decline of relevance since 2017.

I think "Selling out" isn't the right term for STE. they're uninspired and out of touch.

Honestly, I agree with most of this, especially them being on a downward trend. I'd agree they don't really have to try to make money and therefore they are lazy and uninspired. But, I think they have released some quality content as late as 2019. I would like to say that more people than just CT dads get hyped on STE, some of their softgoods are pretty dope imo. I hope they do bounce back a bit this season. maybe I'm being hopeful but I think we will see new content from them. I hope lots of companies use this quasi-post covid era to capitalize on in-person events.

I agree, but it's been like that for a long time. They built the first hotel up there in 1850. Cog was about 20 years after.

Wow you sounds extremely entitled. If I wrote a post about every brand that didn't want to work with me I'd be on the front page everyday with a new post.

If Ski The East was still doing the same thing, and types of things they did in 2012 I'd personally bitch slap them for not evolving. You can sell tall tees to kids on Newschoolers and have kids, save for retirement, or be a functioning adult in your late 30s. When does it become enough for kids like you? if I stopped filming TC and doing Tell A Friend Tour so I could start a family would you be making a post about me?

I really hope you don't expect to work inside the ski industry because this isn't a good step to take.

Likely, but it's also likely that was discussed beforehand. That shouldn't be reasoning for them being "out of touch." The way that reads, it sounds like he wanted to work with them and wanted to be paid for it and they didn't care enough to work with him to do so

Tbh I don’t really think Ski The East sold out, but hear me out.

At the end of the day, the east coast isn’t 100% made up of park rats who wear tall-t’s. Yeah they may have moved away from being “core” (that word is so loosely thrown around on this website I fucking can’t), but the unfortunate reality is that skiing is already a niche market and catering to a small fraction of that niche market base isn’t really gonna help rake in the dough. Sometimes you gotta market to those New Jersey families who drive up to their expensive slopeside cabins in Vermont, or even the average joe who can only go night skiing at their local hill a handful of times a year.

my post wasn't about getting paid. Maybe reread after knowing that. I was just giving an example of what they are not doing for people in the community, and then a genuine question of what are they doing for the ski community. You didn't acknowledge the first thing or answer the second. I'm answering based on the topic post, not the range of my thoughts and feelings on STE. I'm not calling them out for doing their thing to live and make money, but it's a huge bummer for such a presence to be so culturally out of it.

As for personally attacking me, I do work in the ski industry. I have for a while. You might've heard about some stuff I'm involved with. I get how it is in this industry. My stance is coming from a place of being sick of people doing it in regressive ways to summarize. I'm surprised you don't agree honestly. Regardless, If you think the current state of affairs is healthy for the community, we won't see eye to eye.

Ultimately, I've met a lot of people from STE, and they're who get me stoked. Not STE itself. I'm not hating on STE, I'm being upfront about what I've witnessed up close for the past ~6 years.

i misread what he said, he did free work for them and thought he should have got paid. understandable but its the ski industry, tons of work is done for very little compensation.

Honestly Geoff and Rooster are some chill ass dudes running a profitable business in a very small "ski lifestyle" niche market. They are also in their late 30s now with kids and wives and mortgages, so ya.... money talks, "underground" "core" "street cred" definitely don't matter as much as when they were college kids pounding beers and skiing down the stairs in UVM lecture halls. Props to them for their entrepreneurial spirit and business acumen.... its basically just been the two of them at the helm since the meathead days.

they've played a HUGE part in the industry, yes they're based on the east coast but their websites, videos, blogs, content, and apparel lines have always propelled the industry forwards. They were some of the OG east coast "core" riders in the late 90s early 2000s and transitioned towards filmmaking and apparel. The iconic STE stickers were basically a promotion tool for their Meatheads videos, but when VHS/DVD sales started plummeting the business shifted towards STE apparel, content, and lifestyle goods.

I interned for them in college and yeah they didn't pay me much, but I learned a ton about how to run a small business, helped myself to the hoody rack, got tons of free ski gear, lift tickets, free contest entry, and could expense my travel. Also met some of the athletes, industry reps, creatives, and just generally had a good time..

super impressed with what they're doing now... when i worked for them it was just them in geoffs basement, me and one other shipping/marketing/events intern, and then their creative guys almost all on a freelance basis. Soon after that they expanded to brick and mortar retail and increased staffing levels. i went to the boston ski expo 2 years ago and their booth was by far the biggest, busiest, and top selling. The apparel is pretty dope, the mugs and trinkets are fun, yeah their customer base is sort've gapery now but hey that's who has the money... boston & Connecticut families who have money to drive north and ski. It takes a SHIT ton of work to run a business like that, you aren't making much so you can't pay your people much... ppl accuse you of being a sheisty employer when really you're just struggling to stay out of the red that year.... Its blood sweat and tears to run a small business in America and they're some of the few doing it in skiing.

They're living the ski bum dream and doing it from their home town and home resorts... making a decent living, supporting younger folks/athletes in the industry, and still skiing and partying and throwing events all over new england. Pretty much all any of us could hope for right?
